    Deadly accident GT3

On Friday, 27th of April, there was a deadly accident near Hamburg, when a 997 GT3 driver crashed into the rear of a truck on the motorway A23.
Strangly enough, the accident happened on the right lane, where the Porsche crashed into the lorry with approximately 200kph.

Here's the police report (in German):

    Police report accident A23

And this is a pic of the Porsche:

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

    That is horrific! Poor soul.

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

    too bad!

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

Horrible death indeed. But in my field of work I see people suffer and have long drawn out death. At least he died, doing what he enjoyed and I'm sure it was quick and painless. It's not about just about quantity but quality of life.

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

Oh my Goodness, it's absolutely frantic. I'm also amazed by the conditions of the accident. Probably you should kindly give us a brief translation of the police report.

Let anyone here pray God's comfort.

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

Awwwwful; the poor family left behind. Verrry sad.

Then the callous passersby mostly thinking, "Porsche..., oh..., THAT makes sense to me now."

That has also been discussed, since the accident happened on the right lane at such a high speed.

Could have had a medical condition or mechanical failure which caused the accident. Otherwise difficult to explain.

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

It happened in the evening at around 8:00 PM. The guy was flying in the right lane, at about 120 MPH(or more) and didn't see the truck is my guess. He was probably under the influence possibly after a dinner date. And or, he was not paying attention and came up on the lumbering truck like it was standing still. RIP, but speed kills.

It surely is, but OTOH such pics can remind us all that we drive similar fast cars how dangerous it can be going fast.

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

    Really throws caution ..

Could be someone we talk to on here , but we will probably never know ..

    Its a shame - RIP..

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

    Not good. Horrific in fact.

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

Very very tragic. We all need to take care...

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

    Terrible :-(

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

Here's a similar accident, and he wasn't going nearly as fast ...

I thought trucks were not allowed in the overtaking lane on autobanns?

    Tragic incident.

The overtaking lane is the left, not right.
God rest his/her soul and help the family.

Too bad and too strange! The driver didn't brake...

I'm usually the boring guy posting how danerous and irresponsible it can be to travel at excessive speeds on public roads, but despite that, I also spend a lot of time trying to convince people that speed itself does NOT kill. The "speed kills" campaign has been very effective at disseminating this myth. It is not speed, but rather, poor judgement that kills.

In this case, I suspect that it was not the speed of 200km/h that resulted in the accident, but rather, the poor judgement that led a 200 km/h car into the right (slow) lane. (Pure speculation, like all the other comments, of course)

Likewise, tales of excessive speed on public roads display poor judgement. There are a host of posts and threads about folks doing 130 mph plus on public roads, usually at night. That's poor judgement - especially at night.

As a physician, I recognize how insidious this can be. One can get away with poor judgement 95% of the time. It's like that in medicine: you can make a mistake and 95% of the time, your patient will do just fine or their course will not be affected. For the person making that mistake, it is hard to appreciate the error, especially since 95% of the time, there are no bad outcomes . . . it's like that on the road too. THAT is what we need to be reminded of.

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

Poor judgment, possibly. This guy could have had a medical condition that caused him to lose consciousness. The one known is that at the high speed he was traveling he had little chance of surviving the impact. High speed compounds any possible mistakes, including poor judgment.

With respect, if one loses consciousness on the Autobahn, good luck no matter whether you're doing 100 km/h or 200 km/h.

Furthermore, sudden incapacitation due to a medical condition is probably the most rare cause of car accidents out there. Poor judgement is a million times more likely.

The frequency of fatal car accidents on the Autobahn is no higher than it is on North American roadways when indexed for volume. The same is true when one compares fatalities when the speed limit on US highways was 55 versus 65 or 75, or compared to Montana when no speed limit was present. 99% of the time, people employ good judgement when driving. The other 1%, plus mechanical issues, plus combinations of unforseeable factors, plus natural conditions lead to most accidents. I still believe that speed (itself) does not kill. Any statement like that is going to be an overgeneralization, and exceptions will always occur. My point is to counter the popular myth that speed kills, which is less true, in my opinion, than the statement that speed does not kill, but poor judgement does.

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

May this post reminds us that death could be a glimpse away... Drive carefully and may the soul of this poor guy rests in peace.

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

    Read in a today's newspaper:

    1) technical experts calculated a speed of nearly 300 km/h
    2) the guy was a 39 year old tyre dealer known by the police as a notorious fraud.
    3) the guy burnt alive.

    Maybe he suicided?

    brgds, Tom

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

Speed per se doesn't kill. It does, however, lower the margin of error when you make a mistake. Less time to react before hitting something is a simple and incontrovertable outcome of going faster. At 60 mph I have 2 seconds before I reach a spot 176 ft away; at 120 mph I have only 1 second.

It appears the GT3 driver made no attempt to correct his velocity, so this doesn't apply here. But most of us (all of us?) have had close calls where we were able to avoid an accident by changing velocity (speed or direction) just in time; imagine the outcome if we had less time.

    Re: Deadly accident GT3

May God give his friends and family strength. Really as sad thing to happen to anyone.
