    997turbo vs SL55

    wa pulling with my friend today.
    empty road and severla pulls:

    - starting at 50km/h, i pulled away strongly and he only started catching up at above 230 km/h

    - starting at 30 km/h, still pulled away easily without him gainig on me until about 230 km/h

    - starting from standstill, he pulled away badly....at about 160 km/h i started tgo catch up...above 200 i eased off cause of vibration mentioned in onother thread.

    - from standstill with torque-braking my tip, i was launched by a slingshot..my friend said that he felt that in 1/10th i was a car length ahead and pulled away as if its a fighter-jet. he said it sounded the same too:)

    obviously the turbo tip only delivers from stand-still if power-braked....but then its killer.

    good or bad.....dunno !!
    will go for another spin tomorrow after balancing my wheels and put it on video...

    next on is his 430

    Good to know, but if you had a manual he would never catch up above 230km/h

    since this is about comparing cars, last night i tried with a Z06, from 0 km/h i flyed away, from 50km/h i was ahead like 1.5 lengh car up to 230 km then we slowed down, only speed from which he jumped ahead was from 20-30km/h because the Turbo is not working yet, so he jumped 1 car lengh but after the turbo worked, i kept the same pace with him and was getting closer very slowly.

    but i am impressed with my tip turbo

    Actually, the Tip is about 1 second faster to 150mph (240kmh) than the manual. Can't believe the SL55 would pull back any lengths on the Turbo at speed. Based on all the published tests, the 6spd Turbo should be at least 3 seconds faster to 200kmh and faster still as the speed increases.

    the sl 55 is stronger than turbo in high speeds!?

    Hmm? I own both a 2003 SL 55 and a 997 TT Tip. My 997TT Tip blows my 997TT away. It isn't even close at any speed ... to any speed?

    i pulled against a 2007 merc sl55. it has 517 hp and 700nm torque.

    i was most surprised, that when pulling from standstill and not torque brakin, he pulled away cleanly without any problem.

    only when i was torque- braking my car til about 2,500 rpm i killed him like being launched of a fighter- carrier.

    I think there is a more difference than 17hp between 500hp SL55 vs 517hp SL55.

    As i see some tests SL55 517hp one was better than M6

    Tulsa Turbo,

    I know you have the EVO Stage 4 package (not to mention those killer rims). Do you have to torque brake your tip to get those fast launches with the EVO upgrade ? Is that when the tip dominates ? If you do not torque brake does the car still accelerate briskly ? If you do not torque brake do you get blown away, as has been suggested by some tip drivers vs. other competitive machinery ?

    Just upgraded to EVOMS 997TT EVT-690R with GIAC Flashloader Switching Software. I haven't run the race gas yet. ;

    The short answer to your question is unfortunately YES! Honestly, I torqued braked only once. It was too easy and the car became a rocket. I don't torque brake because it will tear up the transmission!

    I have never been blown away in my 997TT. If somebody gets the jump on me because I did not torque brake, it is only a matter of seconds before they are in my rear view mirror. Even with the upgrades there is indeed a hesitation if you stomp on the throttle from a dead stop. I normally have the car in sport mode, PASM off, PSM on and have driven over 3600 RPM prior to stopping. This way, the car is in 1st gear when stopped and revs all the way through the powerban before shifting.

    Most the time I am taking on another car (like my friends' Murceilago, Viper, Ford GT) we are already rolling. In my experience, most car enthusiasts don't like to race from a dead stop because it tears up their clutch/transmission, too. And this goes for both manual and automatics.

    The trick with the roll-ons is to be in the 3600-4000 RPM range and the car launches the second you stomp on it. If you are not in that rpm range you just hit the down shift on the steering wheel and you're ready to go!

    Sounds like reality is a hell of a lot better than what the non-owner armchair magazine writers/readers are spewing. I just can't wait to get my freakin car any longer ! So, fill us in with the details on the 690R program. From what I understand, the 690R program runs like a Stage 4 when on regular gas, but with 100 octane is the 690 hp banshee. My only issue with the 690R kit is that you need racing gas (100 octane) to get the full potential (but who uses racing gas for daily driving). BTW, what did the 690R package run you for 1. kit; and 2. install (assuming you did NOT have Stage 4 already) ? I wonder why EVO isn't coming out with a GT700 kit that runs on 91/93 octane (maybe in the near future ?). Tell me the 690R on race gas just simply decimates your buddy's Murcielago (I have a neighbor that just ordered one (LP640 Coupe) for about $380K) !

    Station that carries race gas at the pump is 1.5 miles from my business. I will fill up there often!

    I really don't think you are going to be disappointed with your car. I believe you will learn to love it. Just remember it takes a little getting used to.

    Yes, the 690R program is identical to the Stage 4 when run in the pump gas performance mode - called 'Pump' mode. If all one wants to do is switch between 'Race' and 'Pump' mode with the flashloader, I believe the cost is $550 over the Stage 4 upgrade ($400 for software and $150 for flashloader.) I beleive it is another $200 for each mode you want to add in addition to the 'Race' mode. There is a 'Kill', 'Valet', and 'Privacy' mode that can each be added for $200. I believe it will be around $1150 to get the system with all modes installed.

    I installed the 690R system myself as it is a simple ECU change out since the Stage 4 apparatus was already installed. As for the Stage 4 upgrade, installing the exhausts and intercoolers for the Stage 4 upgrade was very tricky. I would strongly recommend you have your dealer do those two. Installing the headers is not too tricky if you have a lift, just be careful with the manifold bolts as they like to snap off.

    Both the Ford GT and the Murcielago are great cars. Decimates is an awfully strong word ... however, I do pull them pretty much at will! IMHO, the Murcielago is a BIG car and it is not flickable like the 997TT is in traffic and in the twisties. Once my friend, Tim got the Murcielago, and I had a chance to drive it, I decided I did not want one. Even Tim is wanting to trade it in on a Gallardo! My other friend Ron drives the Ford GT. It reminds me much of my Viper ... RAW! Visibility is not great and one must really concentrate if you are going to stay out of trouble with such a car.

    Many people on these boards blast the Turbo because it lacks 'Passion.' In reality it has all kinds of goodies that keep you safe. It is easier than almost any other car to drive fast AND stay out of trouble. But surely you have by now heard it many times on this board; once you get to 80-90% of the 997TT's limits, it gets squirrely. First over then understeer. When this was happening to me (only on the track did I ever push it close to the limits, since I am very comfortable and familiar with the local track ... owned by my neighbor and good friend for many years), I thought it was me or the way I had set the buttons, maybe even the tires. Once I started reading on this board I realized that it must be the car! Hopefully, someone will correct the PASM programing and we will be able to get past the squirrely 80-90% limits. I believe then that people will feel more 'Passionate' about their 99TT's.

    Remember that none of this squirrely behavior happens in the straights, just the corners when really pushing the car.

    The only car for me worth mentioning that I have not had the chance to compare head to head is a Ferrari. I love both the F430 and the 599's. We do not have a local Ferrari dealer in Oklahoma. I would have to drive 4.5 hours to Dallas, TX, to get to the closest Ferrari dealer. This would be a bumer every time the car needed service. I will be going to California twice this summer to check out the F430's. My 70 year old father-in-law has recently decided he needs an F430 and that I should consider getting one also. We are going to some national Ferrari rally/get together in late July or August. Maybe we will both get an F430?

    If I do in fact get an F430, I'd bet money that I drive faster in the 997Tt, use the 997TT as an everyday car and use the F430 ... well ... ahhh ... you know ... like NICK!

    Don't worry about it.

    If you got the Ferrari, you'd use it much more than Nick does just making those 4.5 hour trips to Dallas every time it needed service.

    Sounds like you've got the world by the balls ! I've taken a buddy's F430 for a spin. If its good weather and you don't need a back seat theres really no other ride I'd rather have for the money. Question for you will be how do you acquire 2 2007/2008 F430s at MSRP in the US ? Not gonna happen. A fully optioned brand new F430 Coupe with the ceramic brakes, etc. will set you back $250K-$260K as your buying it "aftermarket". If your father in law is buying tell him you want a spyder. Either way, you'll surely be one happy camper ! Decisions, decisions, decisions.
