    Gents... your thoughts please...

Hi guys... I was just wondering what the board's thoughts are when it come to performance lubricants. (i.e. Slick 50, Prolong, and Duralube)
I am asking because I recently go involved with one of them and on testing on an older car, 98 BMW, it was quite good I am close to putting it in my baby but obviously I have my reservations....

I guess my questions are ...

Would you use it on your 997?
    What brand did you use?
And the results you found personally?

Thanks I really appreciate your thoughts on this...

    Re: Gents... your thoughts please...

The oil requirements are very specific because it is used to drive the variable lift cams so it is not just a lubricant. I would not add any additives or stray from the manf. guidelines for this reason.

    Re: Gents... your thoughts please...

Stay away from that stuff. Car guys tend to overthink their maintenance and mod options, and this is no exception. Stick with Mobil One and no additives and you'll do more harm than good.

    Re: Gents... your thoughts please...

I wound not use such additives. Maybe on your old beater for whatever its worth. I doubt there is any benefit. Would hate to see you gum up the engine with that thick as molasses stuff.

    Re: Gents... your thoughts please...

Many years ago I used to attend Porsche Club of America's annual tech sessions in Oklahoma City. Factory representatives began to show up each time as it began to be a highly regarded forum. In the words of one of their technical guys (when asked the same thing) "let your friend with the Ford Mustang go try that. Don't do that to your $5000 Porsche engine." (Clearly,--that was some time ago!)

My words exactly...I don't think BMW endorse such products either...

    Re: Gents... your thoughts please...

I've put molyslip in every race car and higher milage car that both I and my dad have had in the last 20 years. Our mecahnic was an old Can-Am race crew cheif that used it in every race car he built.

Would I put it in a brand new modern engine? I don't think there is the need. Especially in a street car...

    Re: Gents... your thoughts please...

Yeah, both this Porsche and my BMW 04M3 have very specific oil requirements ; let's just do what we're told while pretending we're stupid and they know more than we do.

Funny: "let the guy with the Mustang" use the wonder oils.

What kind of scientific testing did you do? And what aspect of your engine do you wish to improve by using oil additives?

    Re: Gents... your thoughts please...

Yet another reason for P to deny a warranty claim....

    Re: Gents... your thoughts please...

Another case of treating a symptom where there is no disease.

Like people who swallow a couple dozen vitamins and supplements each morning, and pee it all out each afternoon...

Nothing scientific or even close to being a legitimate mechanical test... However the car did run smoother with less vibration... to avoid placebo I had the old owner of the car drive it for a few hundred kilometers just to see if can sense any changes in the car. he said he did find the car running smoother and so on...

Then i started to track the mileage... which improved by about 48 km more per full tank.

Thats about as far as I went...

    Re: Gents... your thoughts please...

I have read all the bad stuff about additives and how it has little or no effect whatsoever with engines... also some that are TFT (Teflon) based additives can actually turn out to damage the engine....

I appreciate the input guys, also this board has a unique level of humor... Cheers!

    Re: Gents... your thoughts please...

My car runs smoother after I wash it...

And gas mileage is such an impossible thing to "track" with any scientific accuracy, as your driving habits, conditions, weather, everything is a state of flux, even over an entire tank of driving...

I don't know exactly what your processes were, but.... I'd not bother on your car...

The only time I toss something else in the tank or the crankcase is when I get an old car that's developing a sticky lifter... a bit of ATF or Marvel's Mystery Oil in the tank for a top-lube, and again a bit of ATF in the crankcase for good detergent action in the lube side, and she usually cleans right up and the problem goes away...
