    Test Driving a GT3?

I am trying to decide between a TT or GT3. I have driven the Turbo but it is frustrating that test driving a GT3 is not possible. I hate to end up buying the wrong car although neither would really be wrong. I currently have a 993TT and wonder how the acceleration of a GT3 compares to my stock 993TT. How does the acceleration of the GT3 compare to the 997TT?

    Re: Test Driving a GT3?

Two different animals altogether. Both are extremely fast. However, IMO, the GT3 is more radical and hardcore than the TT . If you are looking for a comfort car, kindda quiet and fast then go for Turbo. The GT3 is louder and rattles like a race car...

    Re: Test Driving a GT3?

If you are used to the 4wd safety of the 993 dont buy a GT3 unless you want a track car. Comfort is also another story. A GT3 is not exactly what youd' call a comfy car...

Go for the Turbo or ask a good willing rennteamer in your area to offer you a ride in his..
    Best regards,
    Florent

    Re: Test Driving a GT3?

last week I have the occasion to test both(i could drove only the turbo).
the acceleration in mindblowing in the turbo, you can feel the difference between turbo and gt3.2 different world(turbo vs na),2 different target.

    Re: Test Driving a GT3?

while the 997 GT3 is a much more refined road car compared to the 996 I have had the fortune to drive both , the Turbo is an astounding car in everyway , a fantastic cruise car , comfortable and very quick , the GT3 is raw experience , just as quick but you do need to concentrate, with the stiff suspension if you don't have a tight grip on the steering wheel the car can jump and catch you out, that said it is car that demands to be let loose , then you'll just grin ! .
my choice is the GT3 but i track , if i didn't go racing i'd have the turbo every day

    Re: Test Driving a GT3?

A lot of people will say that if you are contemplating both, then the TT is for you. In most cases I'd say this is true, not b/c people are trying to be condescending, but GT3s are really for the hard core set.

The new GT3s are more streetable than the old (I had a 996 GT3 too), but still a bit of a handful on urban streets and the like.

If you ever come to Austin, you can take mine for a drive in the Hill Country. Might be worth your time given the gravity of your purchase, and Jet Blue flies direct.

    Cheers,

    Jeff

Then try test driving a used 996 GT3.

    Nice Rennteam spirit, Jeff

    Re: Test Driving a GT3?

I've had my GT3 for over a month now and can't believe how streetable the car is. I just had my first track day yesterday and it was amazing. This is a car that can do both well. I've not driven the current turbo but owned the previous one. The GT3's only drawback is the lack of back seats. My kids are older now so no bigee. Anyway...

    Re: Test Driving a GT3?

Jeff, I want to thank you for the offer to drive your car. That was exceptional. A little more information about me that might help you give me advice. Prior to my current 993TT I had a 930 that I had work done to it to improve it's performance and did track the car. A part of me loves the rear wheel drive Porsches and in fact I am a little disappointed in the 4 wheel 993TT. I am a risk taking junkie and that is why I am considering the GT3. My only concern is whether the actual acceleration of the GT3 will be disappointing compared to a Turbo. A GT2 would probably be my best option but that is not in my budget.
Thanks for any advice you can give me. Tony

    Re: Test Driving a GT3?

Tony, I believe I met you at MM Cars about a month or so ago, were you looking at the GT3 RS at that time? I believe you would love the GT3, since its raw, amazing torque, very different from the Turbo, as they say, real hard core. I don't think you would be disappointed. Good Luck, Bruce

    Re: Test Driving a GT3?

    Get both

You can buy a lightly used 996GT2 for the price of a new GT3...

    Re: Test Driving a GT3?

It sounds like your priority is the power the Turbo generates and not the raw driving experience you get from the GT3 so I would say it's the Turbo for you.

    Tony,

No sweat. I am careful with my cars but appreciating the fact that they are 'just' machines, life's too short not to have others enjoy your toys too. And, I wish I had access to several cars I purchased before purchasing them.

Hmmm. Maybe I can lend a perspective. I had a 996 C4S, 996 C2, 996 GT3, a 997S and now the new car. My first Porsche was a C4S precisely b/c it was AWD. Coming from an M3, and knowing the 911 reputation, I went for the easier to drive AWD car.

That was a mistake for me. I really did not like the AWD setup as it robbed the car from feel and playfulness. It was especially terrible on track. So, went for a C2 and have stayed RWD ever since.

To me, the perfect Porsche should be RWD and be naturally aspirated. I like n/a motors b/c they have a quicker, more visceral feel to them, and make better sounds. When you get on the cam in the GT3 and it starts its signature soundtrack, it is otherworldly.

And, the motor's responsiveness (not power, but the way power is delivered) make the throttle an extension of your body.

The GT3 is Porsche's Tour de Force.

The TT will be faster on and off track for most people, will appeal to a larger audience, is better for daily driving, but does not have the same soul. In the end, for me, it's not so much a matter of what power a car puts out according to its spec sheet, but rather the entire driving experience.

For the harder core set and/or those who crave an intimate driving experience that fits like a hand made fine shoe, there is no other. But for those unwilling to put up with the compromises of the 3, the TT is truly a remarkable machine that most people would sell a body part for.

As for the 996 GT2, a great car but still the 996 chassis. I believe that the 997 chassis is a notable and price worthy step up.

    Cheers,

    Jeff

    Re: Test Driving a GT3?

I'm trying to figure out what MM is.

    Re: Test Driving a GT3?

MM is Manhatten Motorcars in New York City. They sell Porsche and a lot of other high line cars.

I wasn't there last month, but I was at their booth at the auto show a few weeks ago but that's it. Why do you think I was there?

    Re: Test Driving a GT3?

I made the move in Jan from a 993 tt to a 997 gt3, I can not be more pleased with my choice. The gt3 is right there as far as acceleration and to be honest just the overall feel of the car far surpasses that of the 993 tt.(imo) - I can say for 100 pct that the gt3 will not dissapoint you. (that is of course you dont mind loosing the back seat and more 'stable' feel of awd. - I made the choice and have not looked back once for what that is worth.
