Got my Michelin Pilot Sport Ribs on today...

Once again, I purchased Michelin Pilot Sport Ribs (Porsche N-rated and approved) 225/40/18 and 295/30/18.
I noticed the improvement right away over the Pirelli PZeros that came on the car originally.
I can only comment on straight line performance until they get broken in more. Also note this review is geared toward the STREET USE LEVEL not track use!
    1) They are quiet compared to the PZeros. Very slight hum, but not annoying considering the rear tire widths. I'm much happier in this regard as this was my major complaint before.
    2) Much more comfortable over rough roads.
    3) Fronts weigh 24lbs
    4) Rears weigh 27lbs
    5) Felt stable and balanced at speeds of 100-110mph
    6) Road manners have improved. Less tramlining and feeling like riding on rocks.

I'll report back the handling/ grip / and steering response as I drive it more.

    Sounds promising

When you say they are Porsche approved, are you sure? My dealer told me that the PS2 are not approved for the turbo. However, he may be wrong. Where have you got your info from?

Mine are the Pilot Sport Rib (N1 Porsche Approved and used on some current 996TT's and C4S's) NOT the PS2's. The Pilot Sport Rib sits between the regular Pilot Sport and Pilot Sport PS2.
Rumor has it that Michelin will not make a 225/40/18 "N" rated PS2 because Porsche does not use that size for a factory installed car. They use a 235/40/18 PS2 on the GT2 and GT3. If your heart is set on PS2's, you can go wider like the GT2. The 235/40/18 and 315/30/18 are very close in tire diameter. I chose to stay close to stock spec to avoid potential increased suspension wear and tear or grief from the dealer.

Re: Got my Michelin Pilot Sport Ribs on today...

    Mark,

Great news! You of course know how the break tires procedures, just wanted to let you kknow that in my case with the identical tires it was about about 2000 miles (not 1000) when tires finally were broken.

    Enjoi! :-)

Re: Got my Michelin Pilot Sport Ribs on today...

Mark , do these "Rib" tires give you more " rim protection " via a bead or extended sidewall and have a more squared sidewall vs the oem P Zero s? My rear wheels look so vulnerable to curb rash with the Pirellis , whose profile almost seems to radius inward from the wheel lip .

Wow, 2000 miles? I was figuring 200 miles

Oh yeah, the Michelins have a nice protection against curb rash. At least a dramatic improvement over the Pirellis
Here's a bunch of pics to demonstrate.....

Re: Got my Michelin Pilot Sport Ribs on today...

A picture's worth a thousand words ! Thanks Mark. Let us know how they handle once broken in.

    Will Do

Re: Got my Michelin Pilot Sport Ribs on today...

Mark - Thanks for the information. I'm close to needing new tires and your comments help with the decision. I'm looking forward to hearing about the handling qualities. Have you considered rotating your Porsche crests so the bottom points at the valve stem? Anal I know, but a small touch to the great looking car you have.

    Hi Dock,
Maybe not quite so anal, after all, when you consider that Rolls Royce currently fits all the wheel crests on ball bearings at the wheel axis and weights the low point of the crest. Then the crest always comes to rest upright when the car stops!

Now that's some attention to detail!

Ha-ha, my girlfriend thinks I'm anal as it is. If I take your advice, she'll have me put away
..........I'll probably do it without mentioning it

I came accross this paragraph at tirerack's website. It was an excerpt taken from a Porsche Owner's Manual.

"Initially, new tires do not offer their full traction. Drivers should therefore drive at moderate speeds during the first 60-100 miles (100-200 km). If new tires are installed on only one axle, a noticeable change in handling occurs due to the different tread depth of the other tires. This happens especially if only rear tires are replaced. However, this condition disappears as new tires are broken in. Drivers should adjust their driving style accordingly."

Re: Got my Michelin Pilot Sport Ribs on today...

What I meant was expect the full power/best shape of traction to appear after you drove 1500-2000 miles. Its coming and improving slowly but I noticed the best traction after about 2000 miles. After that its great and doesnt improve :-)

The other thing you also will notice that the tires start really "perform" after you drove 10-15 mins. Noticeble change in traction and handling.

    No, just anal!

Re: Got my Michelin Pilot Sport Ribs on today...

fritz - the center hubs have to point somewhere. Here is the way I have all of them oriented on my car...90 degrees to the valve stem. Anal? Yep This is, by the way, prior to lowering the car with X73.

Thanks lev, your experience is valuable......

I actually called and talked to a Michelin customer service agent today. He explained that it takes up to 3-4000 miles to fully wear the tires in. With that said, you can push the car before that , but expect improvement over time. He used the example of wearing new shoes. They take awhile to form to your feet.
So, after driving 140 miles on them, I noticed the steering is less heavy feeling. What I mean is that you still have plenty of "feel", but it requires less effort and correction for road irregularities. It's behavior has improved, especially on rough roads. This new feeling actually makes the car seem a little lighter for some reason.
