GT3 Review in EUROPEAN CAR - Ditch the Cup tires

The GT3 gets a glowing review in the May cover story of EUROPEAN CAR. In his "Vantage Point" essay, Les Bidrawn has one concern:

"My only issue is with the race-spec Michelins. Their phenomenal grip is binary--it's there or it isn't. Unless your name ends with Haywood, Stuck, or Rohrl, catching a wayward GT3 is a daunting propostion. Gimme this car with Michelin's Pilot Sport 2s. Then it would be more perfect."

Question: Can one get this car from the factory with Michelin's Pilot Sport 2s? Or any other street performance tire? My salesman said no. Do any of you closer to Porsche in Germany have any other answer?

    Thanks.

Re: GT3 Review in EUROPEAN CAR - Ditch the Cup tires

I personally don't think that PSCs are hard to gather up but yeah, PS2s are more tractable. Disclaimer: my experience with PSCs were in 18's on my 996 GT3.

Re: GT3 Review in EUROPEAN CAR - Ditch the Cup tir

Hmmm, after my track days at Road Atlanta I thought the Cup tires were very forgiving with the 997 GT3 suspension.

BS! As long as the tires at the right pressures this should not be a problem. The non Porsche spec Cups are indeed more extreme and have less progressive break away tendencies than the N spec.

Re: GT3 Review in EUROPEAN CAR - Ditch the Cup tires

The most gentle track tires at the limit are the Toyo RA-1's, by far, in my experience. Don't know if they come in the GT3's size or not.

I used to have MPSC's on my 73RS and it was a handful, but with RA-1's, it can be drifted about at any slip angle with little worry of spinning...

Re: GT3 Review in EUROPEAN CAR - Ditch the Cup tires

I'd say PS2's for road but Cups are not too unrulely on the track (at least on my 997S). In fact, I'm looking for a track tire with a bit more grip as I can get the Cups to slide fairly easily (see my other post).

I noticed that the recommended tire pressures for the Cup tires on the GT3 seemed VERY LOW by Porsche standards. Did I really see that the fronts take in the mid-20s and the backs in the mid-30s? Maybe it was just my imagination, because the PS2 tires have much higher recommended pressure -- like 36 and 45?

Have to agree on the Toyos.

The interesting thing is that the Toyo RA1s were set to be replaced with the Toyo R888. Those are available in EP and Asia, but I don't think in the US. But, Nitto NT01s are supposedly the same as the R888 except tread pattern, and early results in the BMW community have revealed them faster than the RA1s. Both the RA1 and the Nitto come in the same sizes, meaning PERFECT in 18's for the GT3.

My recollection is that the Nitto is owned by or otherwise co-owned by Toyos parent. I'm fuzzy on the details but am believe that the Nittos are essentially the RA1 replacement from what I've read.

Also, bear in mind that this is European Car, not Grassroots Motorsports or Excellence.

Re: GT3 Review in EUROPEAN CAR - Ditch the Cup tires

I thought this was an interesting comment as well. I've run the cup tires on the track and found them to be fairly progressive. This is on a 997C2S. I also found them to be much more capable than the PZeros. At least after one day. I'm interested to see how my first impression might change after a few more runs at the track.
