    Boxster Hardtop Experience

    For those who have fitted a hardtop on their Boxster, what has been your experience regarding any abrasion, if any, on body panels? I saw a post on TheAutobahn forum that the owner of a 2006 Carrera Cab took their hardtop off after a winter season only to find that the top had rubbed through the paint and into the sheet metal of the softtop deck.

    I've ordered a hardtop with my factory build 987S and now wonder whether it will do more harm to the body than good in protecting the softtop during the winter and urban excursions.

    I had a hardtop for my previous '01S Boxster. No problems with the hardtop damaging the softtop deck or anything else. The fit of my hardtop was not as good as the fit between the windows and the softtop, so there was some wind noise from the fact that it didn't fit perfectly. Don't know if they improved that. I decided not to get a hardtop for my newer Boxster even though I liked the way it looked. Since I don't drive in snow and don't use it as a daily driver, thought it was unnecessary.

    I had mine on for a bit. No damage, but rattled like hell after removing and refitting a couple of times. Plus it was a swine to get back on. Maybe something shifted in the fittings that could be adjusted by the dealer, but I haven't felt the need to re-fit it. The soft top is good enough. I did feel I got slightly better mileage with the hard-top on though, oddly enough.

    Had one on my old 986 - never had anu issues, and the larger rear screen was great for added rear visibility. Of course it was a pain to remove if you wanted a drive out top down on a crisp winter morning. I wouldn't bnother with one again, whilst my car is used everyday it is garged at night, and overall i didn't think the messing about fitting and storing the roof was worth the trouble.
