    from 997 to 996

I guess this is an unusual post.
I am downgrading from a 997C2S to a 996C4 3.4. The reason is I will have to relocate for my work from Switzerland to Spain and did not feel like taking a very recent car without knowing the place first. So the 996 is a good compromise. Still a Porsche, but would feel less sorry if something happens during the year it is going to take me to get used to the country.
Prices of cars in Spain are crazy and I will still make money on the 996 when I will be reselling there (I can import one car 'tax free' provided I keep it for a year).

Now to those who are wondering whether there is a difference 997/996 (if anybody...given the 997 is out for 3 years now)...let me say it is night and day and while must people have made the comparison going from 6 to 7, here is my experience from 7 to 6.

    Engine:
The 3.8 not only has much more torque and power, it takes revs very quickly. The 3.4 is lazy in comparison. No life before 4500rpms.

    Engine noise:
997 had PSE, 996 the sport exhaust from that time. Well, the 996 is just mute in comparison. (note: the 3.6 996 sport exhaust was much closer to PSE)

    Suspension:
The 996 also has a sport suspension..but I know it only because I was told. Would not have guessed. For reference my 997S had -20mm/LSD.

    Steering:
I don't know if it is because the 996 is a C4 or because it is a 996, but it is not as precise, as reactive.

    Pushing the limits:
The 996 is so much easier to drive. Smashing the throttle in any corner will NOT do anything. Weaker engine, softer suspension and 4 wheel drive will just swallow that pedal to the metal. On the 997, before doing this, a basic health check of the road and traffic conditions was still necessary...But soo much more fun when all parameters were green !!!

Options I miss from the 997:
    - Sport adaptative seats. I feel like I am sitting in a Renault now....
    - Proper exhaust sound
    - PCM 2 and generally the interior

    Conclusion:
Now I really feel like my C2S was a mini GT3...really sharp car. I enjoy every bit of the 996, it's a great car, but I know what I am getting next when I am back :-) (Get it right (a.k.a GT3) )

    Re: from 997 to 996

Thanks for the retro report. I hope you can get settled into Spain quickly and get back into a 997. They just keep making them better every year!

    Re: from 997 to 996

Yeah...the 997 MKII will be out by then :-)

    Re: from 997 to 996

and I forgot to say, I personally find heel and toe harder on the 996 than 997 ...and I have read many people claiming otherwise..so I guess it is just a matter of getting used to it...

    Re: from 997 to 996

Yeah thanks for the report...interesting idea to downgrade. Look forward to hearing about the gt3!!

    Re: from 997 to 996

Many thanks for your comparison of the 997 to the 996. I have a cousin whose son bought a 2000 996 C4 (a new one), and he said that the car just doesn't move out quickly when you try to accelerate rapidly, which accurately reflects your observations. I thought he was being overly harsh in his assessment, but now I see that he was correct. Hope you are able to get a 997 after you've spent your first year in Spain.

    Jim

    Re: from 997 to 996

It is not harsh, just true...also, in all honesty, I noticed it is probably because on the 997, they remapped the throttle response. With less foot movement and pedal travel, you get 'more' out of the engine. Little detail but makes a difference in the feeling. Also, the engine needs to be higher in the revs...with the 3.8, you get lazy after a while changing gears...so much more torque...

Overall, I think I agree with a UK porsche magazine when they said the 996 is analog, the 997 is digital...
    So true...
I don't regret a second the swap for now. The 996 I got is in a mint condition (and I mean spotless) and I enjoy driving it, which is the most important thing :-)

It is, as you say, mostly a feel thing. The 3.4L is very elastic and quick too. It takes a heavier foot though. I know, I drive one and have driven C2s too.

    Re: from 997 to 996

Well man...enjoy your period in spain.
I have never driven a 997 up to know and i hope to be able to do it this summer, once i will have a little bit more time to look around.

Thanks a lot for the report.
I was expecting the same but not as much difference relative to suspension, apart if you were using 19" rims on the 997. I've been told that in this case the 997 appears much stiffer.
    Let me know

    Cheers.

    Re: from 997 to 996

The 997 with the -20 setup is MUCH stiffer than the 996 with the sport suspension (-20 too, it is not the M030 that I have). There is in fact a huge difference. I think the rim size is only part of the equation. The 996 has the optional 18 anyway. I like both setup, it is clear however that the 996 is more comfortable and higher on its wheels (I do not touch the front spoiler the same place I used too with the 997s). The 997 with this chassis is a good compromise still, because it is comfortable too, and on perfect roads it is a blast...
I have driven however a base 997 (no PASM, no -20mm) and I think it was equivalent to the 996 I have now.
Good luck with your test drive :-)

    Re: from 997 to 996

    Bonjour Jeannot,

Congrats for your move to Spain.

You're right is a bit wierd to move from a 997 back to a 996 but I'm sure that after a few weeks you'll enjoy every minute of the 996 which is still a great car.

Actually I did basically the same downgrade when I sold the 996 Targa for a Cayenne S. The big difference is, there is not a single day where I don't miss the 996. Cayenne is a great car and my familly love it BUT it's not a sport car. It's not by any mean a BIG 911....

I'm going to enjoy the Cayenne over the 911 on saturday when the four of us will go to the mountains to snow ski ...

    Re: from 997 to 996

Where? Is there any snow left? :-) I don't even bother now going to ski (even if it is just 1h drive from where I live). I need sun :-)
    Ideal setup is Cayenne + 911 :-)

    Re: from 997 to 996

We are going to Tignes and I believe there is still some snow left.

Absolutely correct the best combo would be Cayenne + 911.

Actually I'm working on it, I'm trying to convince my wife and kids.

I'm thinking of buying a classic (2.4l S Targa) but it's very very expensive around Euro 50-55,000 or a 3.2l Cab that would be around Euro 25,000 which is may be more acceptable for a weekend car

    Re: from 997 to 996

Enjoy Tignes, my favorite ski resort :-)

Hard to believe you have to convince kids to own a 911!
I would have loved my dad to come with these sort of ideas

    Re: from 997 to 996

My father is currently spending ten days in Chamonix, he is saying the conditions are fantastic. Tignes is certainly better, enjoy it
