    Street-ability of 997 GT3

    With a GT3 on order and a Carrera C2 in the garage that fits very nicely into my everyday life, I wonder if some of you 997 GT3 owners would talk a bit about the street-ability of your new ride.

    Here are some real-life issues that I deal with on my communte. 1) rain; 2) slanted driveways; 3) speed bumps; 4) rough roads; 5) stop and go traffic.

    Also I'm used to the (fairly) smooth shifting and light clutch of the Carrera, but could live with a little more effort to get a lot more car.

    Bottom line: my current 997 is the best Porsche I've ever owned. I'm inclined to turn it in for the GT3, but am a bit concerned that I may end up with a fabulous and very expensive car that I can't drive much and that therefore sits in the garage.

    What do you think? Will a 997 GT3 work for me in the real world?

    I drive my care almost everyday. Though I do live in Socal and we don't get alot of rain. I enjoy it driving much more than my C2S cab. Plenty of slanted driveway (learn how to drive them), no problem with speed bumps, no problems on rough road ( a little bumpy), and can't get worst than CA traffic. Hadn't had any problems yet.

    Thanks. That's helpful and hopeful. I see you GT3 is white. I ordered the same and am looking forward to seeing it. How do you like the car so far? Pluses and minuses for everyday driving? And what is it about the GT3 that you like so much more than your C2S cab?

    The best part is the fun factor. The car just feels more powerful. In addition, the car is still very rare. So if you don't want attention, don't get the car. I can't tell you how often I get complimented. It's nice but not the reason I got the car. You will most definitely enjoy it. Good luck.

    Congrats, you won't regret it. I have both and split my weekly commute between my C2 and the GT3. I like my C2 a lot but the GT3 is awesome. Completely different animal in all senses. It is very capable and a perfect daily driver IMO. It rides rough but that doesn't bother me at all. The clutch differences between both is also noticeable. After driving the GT3 now over 2500 miles, I find the C2 a little too soft. My 02....

    Do you think the white color draws attention, rather than a mid-range grey or black? I ordered white too because I was convinced by my salesperson that it is a great color for the GT3. I thought about it and finally agreed. A good color for not, sunny California and Hawaii too.

    Personally I wouldn't have a 997 GT3 as my only car. It can be done with the S, depending on your lifestyle and what your wife/gf drives, but tough to do with the GT3 b/c of ride height issues, lack of back seat. There are just certain places you cannot go with the GT3.

    I drive a bmw suv for those days and for foul weather days.


    From a prior post on the subject:

    "Pragmatically: You should have another beater to drive around on foul weather and for errands. Two seater, can be tough to get into and out of due to low seating position, terrible ground clearance etc etc. It will prove notably less street friendly than the S, which b/c of its inability to just go certain places.* Trade in on the S will be staggeringly low (supply and demand; Porsche makes a lot of cars), and the advice above on finding a private buyer and doing an "In and Out" with your dealer to use the S as a trade is good approach.


    * Due to the front spoiler overhang and low lip height, even modest inclines (entries into parking lots, driveways for example, let alone a parking garage) have to be taken at a 45 degree angle, and some narrow inclines cannot be negotiated at all. Even when there is enough pavement in front of you to negotiate an incline, you have to wait for the traffic to break so you can approach and go up the incline slowly. With cars coming up behind you and trying to exit, it can be a PITA in high traffic conditions. Certain gas stations and store entries are completely off limits in a GT3."

    The GT3 is definitely more finicky. I can't even get out of my driveway without scraping the front lower spoiler a bit.(no matter what angle I take it at) I still have the "S" and may have to keep it I've got a Hybrid for getting around here in So. CA anyway. BTW, even though you scrape the front spoiler I just plan to have a spare as back up so it'll give me peace of mind. It won't be worth it to put it on until the other gets really hacked up I love the stability at speed and grunt power of the GT3. As stated earlier the "S" seems soft in comparison but I still love my "S". Plus, I haven't gotten used to the beating price wise it appears I'll need to take on the "S".

    We have a VW TDI wagon that gets around 40 mpg on biodiesel and has the room we need for groceries, dogs, friends & family, etc. That would remain our "other" car besides the GT3.

    Would you please direct me to that discussion or briefly explain? I understand that I should ask to not have to pay tax on the entire GT3, just on the value in excess of my trade. Also, that I should try to set up a private sale but run it through my dealer ????

    Chipper, I'm not going to lie, you are going to scrap your front lip bumper. But after the intial shock of not having a perfect bumper, you just deal with it. Once it's chewed up enough get a new one. I have two extra for 90 USD each. Ask your dealer to hook you up and get them at cost. I think white is a great color. You see alot of them on many websites but to see another GT3, let alone a white one is still very rare. I live in Socal, where there are a great many porsches and I've have only seen a 3 total in the last 6months. Consider Carrera GT silver, or guard red. Both great options. But my bet is getting white. It's a classic color which will be easier to sell.

    How do you take driveways? On an angle? And do you go straight over speedbumps, or also take them on an angle?

    That's exactly right, but it's state dependent. And, dealer dependent. Some states make you pay the entire sales tax, with no break on tax for your trade. Some (like mine), require you only to pay the difference b/t the trade and purchase price. Here, we get a year. . . a year from the day you trade your car to use it on the next car. I did an early trade and am using the tax credit on the GT3. Since I traded in an expensive car, I have zero taxes due on the new 3.

    Some dealers have no problem with running the car through them (they shouldn't as they are getting my business on the other end), some will charge a nominal fee for the service. It wouldn't surprise me though that some dealers would balk, prioritizing short term gain over long term customer relationships.

    I'll try to get over it, maybe buy a spare spoiler or two for car show/concours events, which I do with the local PCA. What about putting a black plastic adhesive door edge guard on the spoiler? Or would that just make it lower and scrape more often? BUt might protect the edge of the spoiler.

    Thanks. I'll check with my dealer ... Not paying the full tax on a 100K+ car would save some money, that's for sure.

    I put 26k miles on my 04' 996 GT3 in the first year driving Palm Springs to La couple times a week, often in traffic. Had I listened to road reviews, etc. I'd never have had the amazing experience of driving that car daily. Yes, the clutch was a bit firmer, but I also drive a Ford diesel F350 w/manual trans and anything is soft after that. No regrets at all! From all accounts, the 997GT3 is even more streetable v/s the 996 so you will be fine. Yes, I had to approach steep driveways at an angle, or find another entrance and, of course not take speed bumps at 80, but common sense prevails here. No regrets, did I say that enough? Best and most fun daily driving car I've ever had, and am biding my time until I can wrangle my next one, a 997 GTRS.
