    Comparison Opinions 996GT3, 997 GT3, Ferrari 360

I've owned three 911s since 1980, and one Ferrari Testarossa. Currently in a Vette and trying to decide between a 996 GT3, 997 GT3 or Ferrari 360 Modena. Mostly street use, very limited track. Tight technical mountain roads for entertainment in the 30-85 mph range. Needs to be able to be primary transportation although not a daily driver.

How would you differentiate the above rides, and what are your recommendations. And yes, I asked this at Ferrari Chat as well.

    Re: Comparison Opinions 996GT3, 997 GT3, Ferrari 360

If you have the wallet, the 997 GT3 is the answer by far. It will eat the 360 for lunch, and by all accounts is safer and more comfortable to drive hard than the 996 GT3. Unless you just want the purity of a 996 GT3 (which comes with some handling gremlins that may see you off the side of one of those mountain roads), your description tells me definitely a 997 GT3.

    My 2 cents, of course.

no question the 997 GT3... but different budgets!

    Re: Comparison Opinions 996GT3, 997 GT3, Ferrari 360

Can someone please elaborate on the 996 GT3's 'handling gremlins' a bit more?

    I'm considering a 996 GT3, and that would be coming from a 997C2. Thanks.

    Re: Comparison Opinions 996GT3, 997 GT3, Ferrari 360

Std carreras and GT3's have little in common in terms of handling and drving experience. I've owned 993 and 996 C2's and currently own the "notorious" Mk1 996 GT3 Club Sport (the purest of them all). I have never had problems with these alleged "handling gremlins" of the GT3. The reality is that the GT3 - particularly the Club Sports, are very aggressive damped, and have very quick turn in (this is all infinenately adjustable btw, and can be dumbed down to a degree if you'd like). Thus when driving on less than perfect roads, give you a "searching the pavement" sense, and tend to dart around a bit. This can be problematic if you going fast and find a bump or rough patch as you can end up being pitched in an unintended direction. If you are unacumstomed to driving a car which is a bit "nervous" ie overstears- then the GT3 can be a bit challenging - (but isnt that the point?!) The best thing you can do is test the GT3 where it is meant to be driven - the track to learn whtehr or not you like exploring the limits of the car. While the car has become "softer" in a certain sense it is still a serious bit of kit, and should always be respected! If I may respond to the original forum question, it depends on how much you really depend on using the car. The 997 GT3 is the ultimate everyday supercar unless you have serious funds and can get into Ferrari 599 - and much more everyday user friendly than the 996 Gt3's. The 360 Modena is a fantastic car a great, great drive, and if driving on mountain roads is your prime intent -I'd be hard pressed to reccomend aginst it. If you are more track oriented I would choose the GT3s. I have tracked the 360 and it is awesome - but so is the upkeep!
