No, nothing to do with actually fitting them mind you, just not homologated for a 4 seater. You could do it, your insurance and the DVLA would not accept it.
Oh and if you have the bucket seats, you cannot access the rear seats either.
My potential solution is a visit to Ruf!!!

Before the CSL I had a 996 carrera 2 with the GT3 kit, sports chassis, suspension and exhaust etc.
Picked up the CSL last night and drove into work this morning...I have not stopped grinning since to be honest and was having CSL type dreams as well.
Once I got my hands on it it was just sublime to drive, superb balance in the chassis as well as amazing pull and braking.
I dread to think what they must be like on cups in the dry but as it was a bit damp then I preferred to be on the pilot sports to be honest!
Initial impressions and comparing to the 911 are:
- lighter, slightly vaguer steering but still very responsive to inputs and so much better than std M3s
- quicker than the 911 and some; pulls like a GT3 and the speedo just keeps on going!
- Plenty of grip from the rear but it is never going to match the 911 with the punch and traction out of corners
- You can have a lot more fun mid corner and balance the car on throttle without the worry of the arse at 45 degrees and not recoverable
- the noise is just addictive and you just find yourself driving everywhere with the sport button on
- the M diff button makes the thing a little more slippy and allows you a bit more play at the rear end to break away but pull it in
- seats are superb and very supportive
- the interior is Spartan but not bothered and the carbon really sets it off
- getting used to the SMG and have found that S4 to S5 are about right
- car is a real doddle to drive round town in London and even in auto it is pleasant
- quite a firm ride but then what do you expect
- Much less obvious than the 911 so not so much of an occasion which is good in a way when leaving the car somewhere!
- The noise, the noise and the grunt.
Still chuckling now about the whole experience as it really is like being in a big 205 gti but with about 3 x the grunt!
Looking forward to some track days and a ring trip to find out more about the car, behaviour, poise, the limits and to enjoy it even more!!
Smiles all round and defo a lot more fun than the 911 to drive and more rewarding

There is a link: Adam2S wanted a GT3 with rear seats, which does not exist. Adam2S's conclusion was that he was going to buy a C2S. AUM's is that he should instead look at a car that is closer in spirit to a GT3 with rear seats: the CSL.
So IMHO AUM's reply is actually relevant.

Yes. The performance difference between a GT3 and a C2S is substantial, and the rear seats are small. The GT3 and and CSL are close in performance and access to the CSLs big back seats is easy.
I owned a 997 C2S and it is a fine road car, but unlike the GT3 and CSL it is not so at home on the track.

I already have a E46 M3, indeed Im on my second. For that reason I would not consider a CSL (3 of any car is too much) and also that its too compromised for me as a daily driver, as in the end I think a GT3 would be. I dont track my cars, never have and dont want to. Id rather thrash somebody elses car on a track than use my own, anyway the principle just doenst appeal.
I love the aerokit looks of the GT3 and would like the extra performance, however my car is an everyday car not a track car and so rear (mini) seats and a really decent sound system are important too. Everyday confort is more important to me than track abilities.
I would be really surprised if the CSL was faster than a GT3. The 997S seems considerably quicker than my M3 and a CSL is not that significantly faster than a normal M3. 343bhp to 360bhp and its shed a few pounds. Id be surprised if a 997S didnt give a CSL a run for its money, let alone a GT3.

Adam, I think I've been reading your posts on BM3W site ?
If you are thinking of changing your order from 997S to the GT3, I hope you are aware that you cannot get a GT3 in the UK until next Feb/March unless you are prepared to pay a premium and possibly a compromised spec.
It's a real bummer as I want one NOW, not this time next year !!

Hiya, yes thats me... aka AdamM3 - my current choice of cars for the last 5 years.. lol.
Not really thinking of a GT3 as Im quite sure the C2S is the best choice for me... but just checking out there wasnt another option on the GT3. Didnt know it wasnt available yet, the dealer simply said - oh we havnt seen many of those.. lmao... kinda explains it if they are not yet available.
Why the delay in the UK then?

Hey Adam,
If you don't plan to track the car, a GT3 is not for you.
I think a 997S with X51 and aerokit will suit you well.

Oh yeah, they have been available, since about Oct 06, but all sold and waiting list is currently Feb/March 2008 !!
