    BAC Mono

So today I was doing a few errands and on the way home drove past the local luxury car dealer and saw they had a green long-hood 911 outside. I thought: wow, looks like Viper Green. Went in to take a look amd ask (it was, awesome).

Then looking around, I saw a BAC Mono. Wow. Turns out they are a dealer. This is a car that really interests me.. Had a sit in their demonstrator - amazing thing - so beautifully made. Looks like a fantastic toy.. 585kg, 305hp, hydraulically-actuated sequential box, carbon steering wheel with LCD display. Road legal in the UK..

    Want one Smiley

They had 2 - the demonstrator and this - a customer car with a nicer paint job..

Cool looking, though not terribly useful. Also pretty pricey if I'm not mistaken. $100K+, no?

Yeah, I was a bit surprised.. I thought I'd read around $150k, but he told me base was £165k and with options up to £220. Maybe I could find a used one. Smiley

I agree with you, absolutely adore these things. I was drooling over one at Goodwood, had a sit in it and loved the fit and finish. Like you I considered it a replacement for a track toy. And then they told me the price. Smiley

220£ ? Prices must have rocketed.

I don't recall them being this expensive.

    Re: BAC Mono

I'm sure when they had one on Top Gear it was more like £120k yes

Prices have gone up a bunch, but so has the level of equipment and performance.  As far as "useful", the main purpose for this car is driving to, from, and at the track.  Some people are brave enough to drive in the mountains, but it's really a formula race car that doesn't need a truck/trailer.  I love the concept Smiley

Much faster than a GT2 RS at most tighter tracks for $100k less - it's a bargain Smiley

Last price in US was $170k (currently getting new distributor here)

    Re: BAC Mono

Pricey is relatively. They don't produce many cars. Lots of development was going into. Hand build. Full carbon structure. I think 200k is fair seeing the total package. You can't compare it with a mass produced car.

However - buying this requires you to have access to a race track. If you have that track-house on Area 27, it is almost a must buying such a toy!

    Re: BAC Mono

What I don't understand is if you are as track focused as to look at one of these and have that kind of money for what has to be at very least a third car why don't you just buy a track car that is faster? You're going to end up trailering it anyways so that you have multiple wheels etc...

    Re: BAC Mono

Because it is a satisfying feeling to open up your garage, get in the car and drive to a circuit nearby? I hate all the hassle that comes with trailering (you need to get the car to a garage for meddling and so fort...) , I just get my shoes & helmet and I'm off.

There is group of people that slots between track car and a road car owners: drivers like me that got bored with the typical trackday cars but aren't that competitive (or have time) to buy and run a track car. For them these lightweight road car specials are perfect. Smiley

    Re: BAC Mono

Maybe have someone else trailer the car for you? If you have the means to buy a $200k car "just for fun at the track" surely you can afford to have someone help you. This way you get all the wheels and everything you need.

    Re: BAC Mono

It could also fulfil the kind of desire to go for a bit of a spin in the hills or whatever that many people do with a sportsbike. No track special could do that if it's not road legal, and for many of us, a track is a long distance away and requires a fair bit of forward planning.

    Re: BAC Mono

Also, sometimes I want to wake up Friday morning and go to the track instead of work.  If you rely on someone else to provide the car and support, this is not possible spur of the moment.

Having a car that you can drive to the track is so much more flexible.  You can trailer a street-legal car, but you cannot drive a race car on the road.

If it is a local track can you leave the car there?

Not at my track, but at some others.

    Re: BAC Mono

another advantage: it's easier to spot small issues when driving on the road and get them fixed: on a track-only car those niggles only pop up on a expensive (time wise) trackday and can ruin your day.

While I agree with all the points Lars, I am not sure that the car has full carbon structure. I looked at it last year, and it is really jewel-like, with great engineering and componentry, and due to the extremely light weight super easy on consumables (brakes, tires). The fact that (at least at the time, and I am not aware of any changes) the car has a very old fashioned tubular chassis put me off, especially for the price, which has in the mean time risen quite substantially.

    Best, w
