Re: Audi R8 Driving Report - Motor Trend

Thanks Grant. I see that you are a 911 driver. Does a R8 interest you enough to consider a purchase?

Well, I can't afford a new 911 now, so I can't afford an R8 either. I was intrigued by the car and was going to suggest it for my father, but the price has scared him off.

Re: Audi R8 Driving Report - Motor Trend

    7.55 NBR
    $110k to $120k

They missed the mark, a well optionned R8 should be under $100k to compete with a 997S.

Above $110k, the 977TT which has a lot of standard options, is in sight and is in a whole other league.

They call for small production number, so they will sell them in the beginning, but they will not be able to ramp up production in significant numbers, at least in the US.

Yet another potential 911 killer bites the dust, no wonder P gets so much profit per car.

At least the R8 is 10s quicker on the NBR (assuming the above figure can be verified by SportAuto) than the 997s for a similar price...

I'm afraid that with a few "must have" options, and acording to the german Audi page pricelist, the R8 climbs to somewhere to 140k euro, so not so "similar" price to a 977s...maybe similar to a Turbo, yet, another league.

Re: Audi R8 Driving Report - Motor Trend

997S with sport chassis was 7.59, 8.02 with PASM I believe, two years ago.

I don't even want to mention the GT3...

Well, obviously everything depends on your country of residence. For Germany, I have just derived the following (incl. VAT):

(all cars with adequate and comparable options):

    997s PK (381hp): Euro 130.000
    R8 (420hp): Euro 121.000
    997s (355hp): Euro 118.000

Given that even the 997s with PK is slower than the R8 plus the R8 is AWD (which would another 7k in case of the 997 4s...) I would argue that the R8 is very reasonably priced.

The R8 is nearly 20.000 Euros cheaper than a 997 4s with PK. And (to be confirmed) 10s faster around the ring. Also, straight line acceleration is slightly better.

    Any more questions

The GT3 is not quite the competitor...

You know: no ESP, lack of day-to-day usability (in particular in winter) etc.

The 997s did the NBR in 8:05, not one second quicker (according to SportAuto). And even the GT3 needed sports tires (!) to achieve 7:48.

Now, if SportAuto should verify a 7:55 for the R8 that would be an extremely good result to say the least

Re: Audi R8 Driving Report - Motor Trend

997 Carrera S(-20mm/LSD, PCCBs) Sport Auto Supertest
    Ring time 8.05min!

BTW, 7.59min is time unofficially achived with same 997S(-20mm/LSD, PCCBs) by Walter Rohrl.

R8 time 7.55min is achived by Tom Kristenssen. So, I expect von Saurma time around 7.57-7.58min...
Yes, on the Ring 997 Turbo is around 10s faster. So what?
R8 is as fast as F430F1 on the Ring, that's more then enough for me.

On smaller and flat track like Hockenheim you will be pretty suprised how fast R8 will be...

Re: Audi R8 Driving Report - Motor Trend

The performance of the R8 is pretty impressive. I'm sure it handles marvelously (just an impression). Still, I feel that with the necesary options goes a bit to high in price to be a real breackthrough. At least in Spain, a 977S (-20mm/LSD, PCCB) is still cheaper. I would not compare it to the 977 4s (for me, mistake of car).

In any case, is evident that is much faster than a 977s...and slower than a Turbo. I must wait until have real prices in Spain, but what would really be attractive for me would be the v10....but still to many interrogants....

Re: Audi R8 Driving Report - Motor Trend

OK, it compares nicely to the 997S for performance, but price looks like will be more favorable to the 911 in the US.

Maybe P should not wait for the facelift and 30 more hp for the 997. And they should make that 30hp 45 hp to close the gap to the 997TT.

Everyone who has driven ithas been impressed so far. I don't think the low volume will cause Porsche any real problems, but teh car certainly raises the bar.

According to this video, they are positioning the R8 between Porsche and Ferrari.Too bad the R8 does not come as a convertible. Clearly this car is turning heads not only visually but performance wise.
