I agree it's odd, but it can happen. Sometimes, one cannot afford to wait just because of key component is delayed. It might look bad, but it looks better than holding back the entire deal, or releasing a non-working product just to make the deadline.
I'll give you two recent examples:
Was Porsche right to introduce the 987S on time, but with the 3.2L engine from the 986S? or should they have delayed the introduction of the 987 until the 3.4L engine was ready?
Was Porsche right to introduce the 997 Turbo on time, but with a slushbox? or should they have delayed the introduction of the 997 Turbo until DSG was ready?
I agree with the most things you say, but the two examples you gave were introductions of two NEW models. So the question for Porsche was waiting until all things have been developed until the end and have the whole new model delayed or present the new model with some of the old components and to bring the new components shortly after. In case of a new model definetely solution number one is appropiate.
But we are talking of the 997 Carrera/S here, a model that has already been introduced, that is on the market for not such a long time and that is still selling well. So in THAT case I think it would be rather stupid to introduce new components like PDK, DI-engines, power-increase, facelift, new AWD-system in a salami attack and to obset as many customers as possible.
