    A Pragmatists Pessimistic Question

So...If I want my business idea to fly I may need to sell my Porsche and use the cash for the business. If that happens I will need to buy something to tie me over.

What is the cheapest car available out there that will give me the maximum Porsche-like thrills for the $? And of course it doesn't have to be new.

Any suggestions for the potentially "nouveau pauvre"?

    Re: A Pragmatists Pessimistic Question

    Maybe a Solstice?

    Re: A Pragmatists Pessimistic Question

Porsche 944 (or turbo) or Mazda Miata

    Re: A Pragmatists Pessimistic Question

Mazda Miata, no question at all in my mind. They're absolutely brilliant driver's cars.

    Re: A Pragmatists Pessimistic Question

Definitely a Mazda Miata or even a Mazdaspeed 3.

    Re: A Pragmatists Pessimistic Question

How cheap are we talking dollar-wise?

Practically no higher than $20K inc. taxes

    fyi...

The Audi's gone already when the lease ended. Wifey has her Mazda 3.

    Re: fyi...

Rented a Toyota Yaris 5speed on one of my trips and fell in love with it. only $11,000

    Re: fyi...

3 years old S2000 should be less then 20k

    Re: fyi...

The MX5 (formerly known as the Miata, right?) is an OK solution.

My guess it's likely nothing is going to please you once you've been spoiled by 997/S hp and tq.

As for the Solstice..., it's a Pontiac..., a GM product..., unabashedly made mostly for looks (if you like that sort of thing)..., I would rather keep the money and drive a regular car.

    Re: fyi...

Sorry to say this but there is no car you can buy for 20K that is close to Porsche thrills. Sell the car and invest in your business. When it does well you will be able to buy 10 new Porsches.

    Re: fyi...

MazdaSpeed 3. Check it out. seriously, take a test drive. A blast to drive, if you stretch budget +10% to around $22k. But for that you get brand new w/full warranty, plenty of space for business equip/supplies also.

Lechef, are you opening a restaurant? Gourmet fish tacos? sorry that may be an oxymoron...

    Re: fyi...

    Mini Cooper S

    Re: fyi...

    ...

    Re: fyi...

I agree with a Mini Cooper S. If you don't need a four seater, I'd go for a used Boxster, they're plenty of them on the market, and a lot of them aren't driven daily. So you should be able to find a nice low mileage 2.7 around 20K. That gives you a ... recent Porsche convertible, with a flat-6, acceptable performance and sound, and a wonderful chassis. Moreover, running costs are very low. Mine has 90k Miles , has never had any trouble and still works properly.

    Re: fyi...

MX 5 but make sure its a model with a LSD
Mini cooper S is also cool.... and much faster and torquier thatn the MX 5

But I think nothing compares to rear wheel drive so MX 5 all the way !!!

    Re: fyi...

    E36 M3?

    Re: fyi...

    Lotus Elise

    Re: fyi...

Subaru STi Spec C. Lightweight lazer-sharp econorocket - with 4 doors and a trunk.

    I second that !

    Re: fyi...

I think a Miata will not satisfy him in the power department.

    - used S2000
    - Subaru Impreza or Mitsu Evo
    - race bike
    - E36 M3 and Z3 2.8 or 3 liter (not sure about maintanance costs)

If you were in Europe there would be many more hot hatchbacks that you could choose from which would keep you busty while you establish your new business.

    Re: fyi...

yeah go with something like a subaru 22b or even a mitsubishi evo? Pretty cheap, pretty practical...pretty awesome!

    Re: A Pragmatists Pessimistic Question

If I were in your situation, I wouldn't get another cheaper sports car for now. I'd just wait until the business takes off. Waiting isn't bad. You'll have more cash and more options.

But if you must, I'd get an old 911..

    Re: A Pragmatists Pessimistic Question

depends on your "usage" if you are into handeling ..do track driving? but want something still refined and a cab

the new miata is just the car..just go drive it

if you are mainly into straight line there are many other options

    Re: A Pragmatists Pessimistic Question

It is interesting that a Miata is discussed here. It is a driver's car alright but certainly nowhere near as powerful as the C2, but plenty nice on back road twisties. I would recommend a 1999 Miata or newer. They have the 1.8 liter 140hp engines as opposed to the 1st generation Miata (barn doors for headlights) with substantially less power and amenities. A good 2nd generation car would cost in the area of $10,000 -$12,000. Better performance will be had with upgrades:
    Sway bars......approx $300
    Coil over kit .. " $1,300
    Roll bar " $1,000
    Sport exhaust " $300-500
    Supercharger " $4,000-6000

I use this car equipped as described above as a daily driver in the summer and it's a hoot.

    Good luck.

    Re: A Pragmatists Pessimistic Question

imo..get a beater...if you have a great business idea you might find yourself surprised about the amount of time and money you will want to invest to insure its success...there will always be fun stuff available to p_ _s time and money away on.

    Likely candidate: used MCS

A friend has one of these and they're a hoot. Drove it yesterday and remembered why they are such good cars. I don't need to sell yet (and hopefully won't have to at all) but if I do the MCS would be a good choice and easy to live with.

    Re: Likely candidate: used MCS

    A used Vette?

    Re: fyi...

    Used 928
