Anyone changed their air filter? Or have a DIY ?

I changed my oil and oil filter and pollen fliter - and now just need to change the air filter. It looks like it might be pretty straight forward but I like to have a guide just in case I screw it up.....

Re: Anyone changed their air filter? Or have a DIY ?

I think I saw one on the Rennlist today. Check them out. It's a matter of taking off a bunch of connectors. I think it's in a message about a man doing his initial 60,000 mile service himself.

May I offer some advice? If you do decide to change the air filter, double, triple and quadruple check that you've seated (sealed) properly in it's casing; do this because we're just amateurs and no one except ourselves will check our work. I even check all my cars now after I get them back from service.

Years ago I found the dealer f'ed up my wife's VW air cleaner in the way I mentioned above. God only knows how many miles she drove without cleaned air.

Thanks - happen to have a link ? I looked and can't find it....

Re: Anyone changed their air filter? Or have a DIY

I did mine for the 40K service and discovered that the P-dealer who did the air cleaner at 20K must have used an impact wrench to screw the two parts of the air cleaner back together after replacing the filter. Half of the screws were fastened so tight that the plastic was deformed. (Wish I had taken pictures while it was out!) Disgraceful. I am glad I did it myself as I was clearly more careful than the dealer the second time around. They also broke the 'slip-in' connector which holds the aircleaner next to the rear latch.
Watch out for the connectors on the right (Passenger)side. No illustration will acurately describe how they are to be disconnected. DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING. Study the connectors visually and use logic, not force, to un-couple. Once you have done all the various flavors of connectors it gets really easy to work on these cars.

Re: Anyone changed their air filter? Or have a DIY

This should go a long way to help solve the puzzle:

    EXACTLY what I'm talking about!

BTW, he probably used an air-powered ratchet (eedeeit).

Unless you "know" the mechanic, you gotta check their work.

    It's a pitiful shame.

Re: Anyone changed their air filter? Or have a DIY

The PET illustration is good for part numbers but you do not want to take it apart that way. For instance, you want to remove the cable attached to #8 (Mass Airflow sensor), you do not want to remove the Mass Airflow sensor itself! The cable attached to it is tricky to remove and this is what I meant by illustrations not doing it justice. There is another connection for the Heimholtz resonator which is not shown at all in the illustation above (It slides off). Also you will want to loosen the hose clamp not shown (not 5 or 6) but the one connecting to the intake runners. Once you have that hose clamp loose, disconnect the MAF cable, the resonator connection (cable and vac line running to the left along the back of the aircleaner connecting to the back, left, bottom of the aircleaner, unclamp the oil filler hose and pull the airbox up and out. Don't confuse clip #12 with a screw or bolt. It is just a clip (aligner-holder?)- pull straight up. Once the airbox is out flip it over and remove the screws around the airbox (also not shown in illustration) to exchange the filter. (Watch out for #16 -what they call the frame- it is fragile). When putting the airbox back in note the 'guide posts' and fit the airbox properly back in connecting all cables and vac lines.

You might also want to look at your cabin fresh air filter. After 8000 miles mine looks pretty bad.

Yes - I changed that already - good tip - mine looked black as well !
