    GT3 did 344 km/h on the speedo

    In the January issue of Flat 6 magazine ( french), they test a press yellow GT3. On the German autobahn the speedo went up to 344 km/h

    Four things explain that... actually five :
    1. 344 km/h on the speedo represents a real 337 km/h (according to them)
    2.It was on a small downhill portion of the autobahn ( gain of about 15 km/h)
    3. The wind was going with the car
    4. The rev limiter is at 8400, he was at 8200
    5.The Gt3 is pure beast

    They think that they voluntarily understate the real speed limit in order to comply with the requirement of the tyres , which is 310 km/h.
    There should be a speed limiter not to get over 310.. but there isn't ( unlike the Turbo )... that's why the Gt3 does such amazing speeds

    A real figure of 337 kph when the top speed is 310kph!! That can't be right...even if the speed they reached is a little more than the official top speed, that's 27kph more...caused by a downhill gradient and the assistance of the wind??? Seems a bit unrealistic to me.

    1. the 997 Turbo is NOT speed limited to 310 kph. Top speed is limited by rev limiter.

    2. although I think that french Flat 6 magazine is a very good Porsche magazine, especially compared to others in Europe which usually only testdrive "old" models and publish official test data only, I doubt that the GT3 does TRUE 337 kph. From our experience, the speedo error on the GT3 was always pretty high, showing a too high speed AT LEAST by around 15-20 kph, even much more.

    I remember how many 996 GT3 did 327 kph and more on the speedo but the measured speed was in the 305/307 kph kph range.

    Just my opinion. ALL Porsche tires are approved up to the TOP SPEED, incl. safety margins downhill and the wind behind. So there is no reason to worry, even IF this 997 GT3 did true 337 kph, which I sill think is VERY unlikely.

    i think it's tue ....mine arrived at 326 kmh easly ...and the power was not finish !

    I think it's possible going to 335kmh easly...345 ...

    consider that in Monza at the brake point you can see 275 and more on the tachimeter ...and you have only a few meters to brake the car to 60 kmh ...there you have to pray ...in "german" autobahns when all peaple are sleeping it's easier

    I need to comment on that.

    344 to 337 speedo error is about %2 and which is best i ve seen about accuracy especially such a high speed

    I ve not driven 997 GT3 but from my 996 C4S tiptronic i ve seen 301kph(on pseedo) down hill wind from behind and it has still more to go about +4-5kmh. But the real speed is published as 275km/h from porsche. I think porsche speedos are not accurate esppecially over 250km/h

    With my Gallardo i ve seen 330+kph(on speedo) and i remember that 320kph is about at 7500rpm(red line at 8100rpm) 600 rpm to go more. Thsat was all on speedo.

    AMuS did a high speed test with real speed measurements and LP640 did 340kmh (real speed), 997TT did 310kmh and SLR did 326 kmh , 599GTB did 335kmh.

    I think 997 GT3 is not faster than these cars above , both max speed and acceleration subjects.

    For 344kph that is very optimistic read from speedo, if 337kmh for real i think they miss some calculations on real speed

    I don't understand why they don't use a GPS to measure speed.
    Well, I just did on our new VW Golf 2.0 TDI 4motion, and I was not able to reach on the GPS the top speed advertised by VW in the catalog, only achieved it on the speedo which is optimistic by 20kph...
    Should I sue them? :-)

    Sounds like a top speed shortfall of approximately 20 km/h or 10%. Under German law you would be entitled to return the car (courts accept a shortfall of max. 5%) - though I don't know what Swiss law / Swiss courts have to say about this case

    I don't want to show up in front of a Swiss court and claim that the car could only do 189kph when the limit is 120kph in the country

    If I remember properly the rule is the following in Europe

    4 km/h < S displayed - S Real < S Real x 10% + 4 km/h

    Example: S Real : 300km/h
    304 km/h < S Displayed < 334 km/h

    For GPS, accuracy is much higher around +/- 2 km/h

    LoL - you could claim that you're having fun on the German Autobahn at weekends - the judge will understand, as most probably he does the same (just like most Swiss guys)

    In that case, if the speedo is displaying 344km/h and its accuracy is at the top of the tolerance bandwith.

    The true speed is 309 km/h ...
