    997 GT3 Thicker Leather Steering Wheeel option Vs Alcantara

    I have a March production slot for a GT3. My salesman suggested that I choose the Thicker Leather Steering wheel. He thinks it's better for track use. I wonder about the esthetics and functionality of this.

    Can anyone comment?

    Thicker steering wheel option is very popular..

    I have the thicker steering wheel on my 997. For long distance driving by allowing you to rest your hands on the wheel you are more relaxed. If the rim is too small in cross section you have to wrap your fingers too far around and you end up feeling like you are hanging on. Very uncomfortable after a couple of hours behind the wheel. Personally I wouldn't go back to the other.

    In one hand, it's friendly having a thicker steering wheel, but in another hand, for track use, I prefer Alcantara vs. Leather.

    The solution for me would be a "thicker alcantara steering wheel"

    I would probably get the car with the alacantra wheel and order the thicker wheel separately. That way, regardless of which you use, you won't deter potential buyers later.

    My hands get pretty sweaty when I drive so I would rather have a leather wheel personally. I adore alcantara but I would always be worried about how my sweaty palms would spoil its look.

    I wish this were properly documented and then explained:

    Supposedly the 997S wheel has a smaller *grip* diameter than the non-S ("grip diameter" is the diameter of the part of the wheel you wrap your hand around).

    If the "hotter" S road car has been given a thinner wheel than the non-S! Why did they do this? Also, why would a thicker wheel be better for a track car where feedback from car is soooo much more important?

    Especially since Porsche's steering is supposed to be so refined and precise I think I'd want to work it more with my fingertips than my forearms.
