    M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

What do you think? I have a lot of doubts. Can you advice ? Thanks.

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

I bet few people on this board will vote for the M6 :-)
My thoughts: go M6 if you like the look and want a GT.
BUT go 997 if you prefer a driver car. The M6 is very heavy...
    Good luck :-)

Wow both are nice cars and really comes down to what you want from a car. To me the 997S is based on performance first (turns, etc) while the M6 is a luxury car with a big engine. Both are quite nice. I would go for the 997S strickly based on the manual transmission. Now if I could get the M6 with a true manual then.....

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

The M5 is now available with a true 6-speed manual (test drove one yesterday) and I presume the M6 will follow suit soon, if not immediately.

Yes but in the manual M5 you cannot disable traction control (DSC) and instead get MDM which is supposed to be the less restrictive traction control but I can tell you from experience that MDM is more intrusive than basic PSM when in normal mode (not even sport chrono PSM). So you get your manual but can't disable traction control which is a big problem for me.

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

I'd take the 997S over the M6 cab, but I'd take the new M3 over any 997 n/a engine.

You may want to wait until it is out, it is not just about the engine and numbers but rather the entire package and also the sensory experience. Don't short the 997S just yet; look at the Z4M Boxster comparison, i thought for sure the Z4M would come out the winner...

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

997S!!! Am not a fan of the way the new 6's are built. whole front unibody is aluminum, and front outer panels are aluminum and plastic!! God forbid the car takes a hit and the rail are in any way affected or damaged, expect to put new frame rails in it, which will deappreciate the value of your car big time! 997s are built alot better, quailty is worth the money, ride (in my opinion) is better, more firm, more responsive, and enjoyabile!

Different car; I'll take the M

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

Minimally, a 420 h.p. beast. Likely to get closer to 450 pomies and weigh about the same as the turbo. Arguably, BMW makes some of the best engines in the world. And, I wouldn't buy a car based on what may happen to resale if it were in an accident.

Wishful dreaming about the 450 hp, more like 400-410 hp, they will not let the M3 encroach on M5/6 performance. As it stands, let's hope it can keep up with the RS4, yes they make wonderful engines but that's one part of the whole package.

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

Considering the M6 is basically an M5 with a different body and other subtle nuances with a premium...I also think it looks like a boat.

997S all the way, even if the cab variant does look like a turtle (albeit a very quick one)

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

There was only 1 clear winner when Topgear Stig drove them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rvmNenqrxY

No brainer for me at least

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

I'll wager that it's more than 410; I would agree that it will likely be 415-420. It will weigh a great deal less than an RS4. I don't think the Bavarians will have trouble making it faster than the M6. The E46 M3 was faster than the E39 M5. The 3 is in a different market segment. I will concede that if the 3 gets "Bangleized", I'll pass.

I'm not saying that the Porsche isn't a true sports car, but, c'mon we can't keep going back to that adage (excuse); that it's about the whole package. I LOVE Porsches but 25k more for better brakes and less power. I'm kind of tired of it; are you hearing me, Porsche execs.

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

M6-BMW quality, in my experience, is head-and-shoulders above Porsche.

I hate to agree, but, I thought the same thing.

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

Drive both pick the one you like, bmw-quality goes so far...my m5 e60 developed SMG problems which caused sudden jerky 1st gear engaegement randomly at low speed. Also the admittedly wonderful V10 ate 1 quart of oil every 800-1000 miles. Handling-wise the 997S is a sports car and the M6 is a Grand Tourer, simple physics, about 1000 lbs weight difference, only you can answer the question of what you are looking for. If you like to be somewhat isolated and in comfort then the M6, if you need long trips on a highway or get stuck in traffic routinely then the M6, if you want a fun sports car with all the limitations thereof, even though it can be a good daily driver, then the 997S. In the end, very very different cars...

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

I agree, that shouldn't be the only reason to choose one car over another, although you should consider things like that! Quality, enginiering, safty, ability, re-sale should all be conisdered when making a $100k investment! I am not saying that a BMW would depreciate a good amount and a Porsche wouldn't, but imagine getting in a front end collision (which usually would not be an issue repairing by any collision center) but due to the fact that the unibody is made of aluminum, BMW and insurance companys only allow BMW certified collision centers to fix those type of repairs. And even if all it is are minimal damages to the frame ends, due to the fact that it is aluminium, BMW is going to instruct that the frame rails need replacement, Might seem like nothing untill you realize that based on the fact that the rails have been replaced, your 100k vehicle has lost 30k in value, i have seen it happen. These things are important to know! Just a heads up about a experince i have witnessed, although i would choose the 997 it is your decision what you love more and with what you feel most comfortabile.

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

997S cabriolet all the way !

My engine in my E46 M3 had to be replaced because of a manufacturing problem... and mine was not the only one.

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

With a M6 you go on a straight line as fast as a 430 or a 997 Turbo so you are much more fast than a 997.

With the M6 if you love drifting you are always doing them.

The 997 has more handling, it's thinner and you feel it like a glove.

It depends what you use it for.
Also because with the M6 you are always doing petrol if you use 507hp m sport bottom

Now that changes everything. An M5/M6 with a 6-speed manual. Hmmm Really I don't think you can go wrong.

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

I think BMW M's reliability is overrated from the e46 M3 engines blowing up to the SMGIII issues in the e60 M5 through the Vanos line ruptures also in the V10...Noone is perfect, witness the RMS Porsche leaks, but to assume that somehow BMW M's have better quality is an oversimplification and i have a feeling history will repeat itself at least partially in e90 M3...

It very well may have some issues. Many of the late model drive trains have had some sort of a mechanical issue(s). I guess that's part of the price paid for pushing the envelope the way manufacturers have in recent years. I think some would agree that BMW does design and build some of the best engines in the world; evidenced in part by the McLaren and the current V-10. That doesn't mean that Porsche doesn't present a better sports package. They know their customer base all too well. Which is why they hold back horsepower, instead offering X51, X50, PCCB, whatever, rather than offering what should have been standard.
Purely from a business model, I can't argue with their marketing strategy, but as a consumer, I don't like it.

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

    M6

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

Don't like cabs but, the M6 takes it for everything but the very tight twisties.

Hopefully in a few years the question will be M6 or panamera. And IF the panamera is done right and doesn't look anything like the mule the only possible answer will be the porsche.

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

the M6 engine and sequential gearbox are far superior... but the damn thing looks too bulky, and too much of an MTV video clip rapper's pimp ride... sorry!

    Re: M6 Cab or 997 S Cab ?

Porsche. My experience with BMW quality and durability is that Porsche stand hard driving much better than BM's. Especially brakes and suspension parts. Oh and the gearbox.Come to think of it all the running gear except RMS. Trimwise I think BMW stands up (less irritating rattles from my experience although the 335i I drove a couple of weeks ago had a dashboard gremlin rattling so that may be wrong too)

Yes, I think this is the problem with the bimmer. It's MOSTLY an engine and a gear box...whereas the 911 is a complete package that has been tuned over time...
