    Re: PASM Fault?

If you're dealing with Porsche West London, there's a resident technical guru there called Michael Shipp. He's a very helpful guy with A LOT of knowledge. You might want to get in touch with him.

    Re: PASM Fault?

Did you try disengaging the PSM before you took it in?

    Re: PASM Fault?

No I didn't. I was a bit worried that if it DID and it temporarily fixed the problem, then Reading wouldn't find anything wrong, and then the problem might come back. If it DOES come back, then I'll try disengaging PSM before I do anything else. Fingers crossed.

    Re: PASM Fault?

I can sympathise with that! You'd think that staff that drive these cars every day would know instantly what a bad 'un felt like!

If your fault is similar to mine, it will gradually deteriorate over 100 miles or so. If it does, I would be very interested to see if PSM button cures it temporarily.

    Re: PASM Fault?

I know I'm late to this thread, but I had a PASM failure on my 997S about 18 months ago. Went into bone shaker mode while heading south on the M1 in cold wet salty conditions. The error condition was flagged on the instrument display.

Took it into my dealer (East London) and they "performed a recalibration", which I guess translates to hit the reset button.

Car has been perfect ever since with no recurrence of the problem. After having the tiptronic selector replaced (stuck ignition key issue), the car has been perfect ever since.

Car much better since the reset, but my gut feeling is that the ride IS slowly firming up again. It was brilliant for the first 100 miles, then started to firm up again. Pushing the PSM de-activation button doesn't seem to make any difference, sadly.

    Re: PASM Fault?

Thanks for the feedback. How many miles since reset have you done now?

My feeling with mine is that if you stab the PSM button (on or off) the the PASM seems to wake up. Over a relatively short (and seemingly getting shorter) distance, it loses control. This is just my perception but it seems that PASM works under a feedback control loop, and that mine is drifting out of lock. Activating/de-activating PSM seems to make it regain control lock for a while.

When I get time, I'll take these observations back to OPC and see what they say.

At the moment, I can get some decent suspension control back (with the button), but it's still a little dangerous -Yyou get lulled into a false sense of invincibility when hammering into the first few turns on a set of twisties (constant revs in 3rd/4th gear before anyone asks), then the steering precision and body control goes to pot, the car starts to understeer, and it gets a bit hairy. Not too clever.

Did you get any idea of the cost of a PASM control unit change TVman?

    Re: PASM Fault?

Within 200 miles the car went back to the same harsh ride. Porsche Chiswick don't think I should replace the PASM unit, they say it's very expensive and they are utterly convinced that there isn't a problem. I'm utterly convinced there is, so I've asked them to work out the best trade in deal that they can do against a new car. They will be getting back to me after their sales boss gets back from holiday.

    Re: PASM Fault?

That sucks TV Man. I haven't had time to make any progress.

    Re: PASM Fault?

Pathetic - they'll be looking for at least Pounds5k margin when they sell your car on the forecourt - thats you out of pocket. If theres a fault they need to fix it !!

I hate the philosophy of complaining to Reading HQ but why should you be out of pocket for a fault that not only you know about, but also other 987 and 997 owners !

The car obviously has a fault if its detectable that after 200 miles its back to how it was - you really need to take the car in with the current setup - get them to test dribve it, reset it and drive it again. If Porsche have to replace a dozen control units on one car, its their problem - thats why you have a warranty.

There is of course the car rejection route - it might be more difficult as the car gets older, but its perfectly reasonable for a Pounds50k to not have suspension faults within a year, or even 2. You may well end up in the same boat of them offering you a buy back deal, but this way you can at least make the case for getting the forecourt price so that you can buy an equivalent spec car from a dealer.

    Re: PASM Fault?

I came across this on a the caymanclub.net site, hidden away in the meets n events UK section (NW meet)

Do any of you have experience of car issues and dealing with the OPC in Wilmslow? They plan to replace the complete wiring loom on my CaymanS to resolve the PASM/Sport failure issue.
I have informed them that I will not take the car back from them and the options as I see them are: Replace the car or give me a full refund.
The service department clearly do not think changing the loom which takes six days, should be a concern to me. They had the car for seven days to investigate the issue for the fourth time and then I had to call them to ask what the status was only to be told a loom had been ordered and it was due to arrive in twenty six days.
You will always be able to tell the car has been striped, rewired and put back together and also after the two year Porsche warranty ends the cost of isse resolution will be Pounds110 per hour.
My car was delivered on 1st Mach and the mileage is now 2,400 and the PASM / Sport has been defective from new.
    Thansk, Roger

The reason for the PASM failure on my Cayman S is that the wiring loom connector behind the dash board is faulty. This is a multi wire connector where the wires for PASM passing through it do not connect correctly.
The OPC are replacing the car and I awaiting to hear when the new one is to be delivered. I have said PASM and Sport Chrone are must haves and Tiptronic is a definite no. I await the details of what is available. The current car will be rewired I assume and then sold as a used vehicle.

As soon as I get a date for delivery of the next car then I will be on the Cat & Fiddle and other roads to enjoy the car. So I hope to see you all soon in a car with PASM and Sport Chrono but perhaps not red as I have said I am prepared to compromise on colour.

    Re: PASM Fault?

That is an excellent find Percymon! I was trawling CaymanClub last night, but didn't find anything.
I really wouldn't want my wiring loom re-wired either, unless perhaps it was done at the factory. What do you think TVman?
