    997 driving experience...

After 2 weeks of ownership of a 997S (equipped with -20mm LSD, PSE, sport shifter), here are my comments on this car.
First of all, let me say I love the boxster. I had one, it is a fantastic car and if I wanted a roadster again, there would be no question which one that would be.
But then again, there is the carrera and all the arguing about "why would you spend more on a carrera vs. a boxster S or a Cayman S?"
I think I now understand why. After some very spirited driving on some mountain roads this week-end (which I know very well and where my boxster had many runs too), it was easy to come to this conclusion. The admired handling of the boxster is undeniable. But what does that mean? It means you go fast, turn the steering wheel, car turns, turns end, next turn, repeat. It is so easy, so perfect that you almost feel like you are not part of that process. The engineers did it and so does the car.
But where is the limit? Well, this is the point, it is a "digital car", 1 or 0. 1 you go through the turn. 0 it snaps without telling you...
Well, you see where I am going, In comparison, the carrera feels "analogue"...the same turn goes: you go fast, maybe too fast, hummh, need to brake, need to control, feel the input from your rear, turn, smash the throttle...well, YOU are turning. This is the experience. The car communicates to you, warns you even and it's a real team effort.
I absolutely loved it...less clinical...and still we are talking a 997 here...I can only imagine what the older 911s must have been like. An absolutely fantastic involving driving experience...
    Voila...

    Re: 997 driving experience...

You know , with all the new cars out there, lots with better specs than a 911 on the track, zero to 60 times, and on and on, there is one item that all the specs do not really tell you, and that is the fun factor. Drove a new Z06 (just to try it) fast, awesome, I would give it lots of accolades, not really that much fun, well for me anyway, fun factor is tough to quantify, but easy to see after driving lots of different cars and then a 911.

    Re: 997 driving experience...

it is nice hear your comments and I think it would be nice to see more of this 'personal driving experiences' coming into the forum...

    Re: 997 driving experience...

That's what I fell in love with too!
At the time I hesitated with a Boxster, but after driving both , there was sure something much more special , challenging and feeling about the 911.
Maybe we can meet one day at the summit of the Marchairuz or Moll for a chat...

    Re: 997 driving experience...

I'm curious as to how you found the -20mm suspension. I'm looking to spec a 911C4S and I'm in the dark on this one.

    Re: 997 driving experience...

    The 911 is very special!!!

    Re: 997 driving experience...

Bonsoir, we might live in the same region and meet on the road. It is interesting how you describe the way the car "speaks to you".

I think it depends on your references and roads where you will be driving and for how long.
I was worried at first and took my wife for the test ride. She did not notice anything special related to the suspension...so the test was successfull
I tested a base 997 without PASM and that is WAY too soft.
PASM is nice but the sport setting in sport mode is awkward. In a way it's too stiff without being responsive as the -20mm.
Make no mistake however, the -20mm is a sporty setup and requires attention at fast speed and on bumpy roads.
On nice roads it is a blast however....
On long drives (3hours), it is ok, no problem at all.
And finally you get the LSD on top...so....

    Re: 997 driving experience...

I bought a 06 997S (Coupe) and kept my 03 987S. The boxster just sits there even on sunny days. It's got no power/tq (260hp). Yeah, Boxster is fun to drive; but you have to think more and take more chances ('cause it's slower) when passing slower smelly cars on rural highways. CarreraS can solve alot more problems with the right foot.

There's other things too, Boxster is perceived as a Porsche with Panties in the imaginations of owners imagining they have "hotter" cars. etc. Eh, along time ago, it bothered me when the stupid Ford Mustang guy types would harass my BoxsterS. CarerraS gets more respect.

    Re: 997 driving experience...

I would imagine probably harder on the tires too.... certainly one to test drive. thanks for the feedback
