    Welcome!

    I've just changed my 05 987S 3.2 for a 07 3.4 which I collected from Stuttgart last week.

At the moment I'm still "running in" but even at low revs / light throttle openings the car seems a little bit more eager. Having driven the Cayman S the real difference is above 5,000 rpm where the variocam plus engages the high lift inlet cams, here it revs much more freely, Not a lot more power, just more eager. The 3.2 felt just a little bit strangled in comparison.

I'm off to North Yorkshire for a week's holiday today (not with the Boxster). I intend to post more impressions when I get back with more photo's.

    Re: boxster 987S MY07 3.4l 295hp vs MY05 280 hp 3.

thanks, I'm looking forward to read more!
Also, are there any other end-user-noticeable improvements on your new MY07 ?

I would like to buy a 987S in the next months and certainly the new engine has been a clever Porsche move to keep selling new cars ;-)
Also some things like the PSE weren't available yet...

    Re: boxster 987S MY07 3.4l 295hp vs MY05 280 hp 3.

OK, this isn't a direct answer to your question, but here's how I feel: I drive an 986 everyday (35000k a year)and on track often. I just tried a Cayman S on roads I know pretty well and got to this conclusion: Obviously the car is more powerful, more focused and stiffer. But, there's a but, you're still driving a Boxster like car. Yes it's noticebly more powerful, but on the road, it's very, very difficult to get to notice the power "gap" on open roads. I love this forum, but I feel everyone is getting so precise about every single HP you get out of a new car. C'mon, who, and when do you get to take advantage of a 15 hp power difference? Even on track. How many times did I get overtaken by C2, 986s aso on track? As well, how many times did I get overtaken by 3.2, 2.4s aso?
Regarding 987, I guess the main point is: option. Where do you wanna go with your Boxster? If you hesitate between 3.4 and 3.2, that means budget is an issue. I'd say, if it's an issue for you ( it often is, for most of us), get an 3.2 and save some bucks for good track tyres, stiffer suspension settings and driving lessons, week-ends on different tracks!
I don't want to give lessons, but I have to say that reading too many articles get you to the point where a 15 hps difference seems like a canyon. It surely is not.

oliver - good points... (yes budget IS an issue!!).

Second that. As much as I would love a 3.4 "S" I don't think I am missing much if anything at all with my current setup.

    Re: boxster 987S MY07 3.4l 295hp vs MY05 280 hp 3.

If driven around town, the extra punch is immediately noticeable, the 3.4 is so much more immediate especially pulling from 2k rpm, lot more willing than the 3.2 (that I am driving).

Little things are better = the repositioning of the oil / water filling arrangement now means that two aircraft cabin size bags will now fit in the rear boot.

I'm having Armourfend fit the protective "bra" on the front end and bonnet, as my last car got badly chewed up by flying stones, so I 'm not intending to use the car much until after that is done next Wednesday. If I remember I'll take some photo's of the job being done.

I will post more pictures and impressions when I've done a few more miles - I promise!

    Re: boxster 987S MY07 3.4l 295hp vs MY05 280 hp 3.

I picked up my 3.4 on Wednesday and so far I'm slightly disappointed. It's a great car and I'm sure I'll learn to love it but it doesn't sound anything like as good as the 3.2 I test drove. I'm starting to wonder whether that car had the sports exhaust. Admittedly I've only done 120 miles so far - most of it in bad weather or traffic so I shouldn't judge it yet. I'll be out at the weekend on old favourite quiet and twisty roads after which I'll have a much better feel for it.

Run it in and then take it to the red line before you judge too harshly

I agree. You don't get the benefit of variocam plus until the cam profiles change at 5,000 rpm or the combination of the sharper, free revving response that it brings combined with the marginally greater power until after the running in period. Don't be tempted to short cut the running in procedure, either. I am finding it difficult!

    Re: boxster 987S MY07 3.4l 295hp vs MY05 280 hp 3.

Just drove the 3,4. It feels much more "agressive" than my 3,2. The sound is not as loud but I liked it very much. But I also found out, that they saved a few pennies with model year 2007. Parts of the cupholder are now made by a much cheaper looking plastic material. But you will only see it when you open the cupholder....

    I don't drink and drive - so it won't be a problem

Just inspected the cupholders in mine and you are right. Cheap and nasty. The fittings in SWMBO's Pounds5k Kia Picanto are of a much higher quality.

    Re: boxster 987S MY07 3.4l 295hp vs MY05 280 hp 3.

Well I was quite impressed by the cupholders! Thanks for the reassurance though folks, it's good to hear. I took the car out at the weekend and gave it a much better test. I'm still not 100% blown away, as I'd expected, but I did grow to appreciate it much more. The balance on tight fast bends is absolutely phenomenal and brought a huge grin to my face every time. I hope I do appreciate the change after 5000 revs but it will be a bit of a change for me too because my usual style in previous cars has been to accelerate hard to about 4 - 5000 and rarely push above that. I'm looking forward to getting the running in over so I can find out. I understand how you feel dreamcar but like you I won't shortcut it if I can possibly help it.

Now go and look at the cupholders in a pre 07 model 987. Chalk and cheese! Not a big deal in context with the brilliance of the rest of the car, just an irritation to save a few coppers.

Porsche engines are fabulous above 4000rpm so run it in and start caning it!

    Re: boxster 987S MY07 3.4l 295hp vs MY05 280 hp 3.

What is the redline on the 3.4?

    Redline still 7200 RPM

That is still unchanged. The TPS is a very nice addition on the 2007 models though.
I would be very surprised if you could feel a 5% HP increase in the seat-o-meter (your butt)
