    Nail in the tire

I drove a nail into a rear-tire. Very unlucky, indeed. The profile-depth after about 12.000 km is around 5 mm all around after changing front- to rearaxle after using the wintertires. It schouldt be better to change the whole axle or all tires?

I drive the Continental Sport Contact 4x4 NO, are there possibilities to change to N1 or more?

Is it still impossibel, to repair such wholes, at least for a V6?

    Re: Nail in the tire

Porsche recommends tire replacement. I had a nail at 2K miles, had it patched without any problem. I'd patch and replace all 4 at the same time.

    Re: Nail in the tire

Agreed... had a similar incident but just patched and changed all 4 later.

    Re: Nail in the tire

After reading a lot of repairing, it was patched without any problems. The whole was near the middel of the tire and very smal inside.

    Re: Nail in the tire

My dealer sold me a tire insurance program when I purchased my CTT. I initially thought it was a boat load of money, but after 3 punctures and 3 no questions asked replacements, it seems a great deal. That's right, replacement not repair. The program lasts as long as I own the car for only the inital premimum.

    Re: Nail in the tire

whats the deal with the nail in the tires...sorry to ask, but i just want to know Why can't we just take it out and get it fix on tires, why have to change the whole tire?is this really important???

Safety is the short answer. Most Cayenne tires are rated for 150 mph or higher and the concern is that, at those speeds, a patch or plug may fail. A sudden loss of air pressure at 150 plus mph would not be a good thing.

There are special plugging/patching methods and materials that can repair some punctures and maintain the tires speed rating, but very few tire dealers can do this. Porsche has chosen to avoid the liability risk and just recommend you replace the tire rather than attempting a repair.

If it's just a slow leak then get it fixed... (even my dealership rep recommended I just fix it)
If it can't hold it's air pressure for longer than a couple days you should probably replace.

    Re: Nail in the tire

Here's an illustration of some different repair methods. This is from TireRack (link to web page).

Their illustration of a correct repair is a combination of plugging and patching. However, I think the best repairs are the "mushroom" variety that they refer too. These resemble a valve for an engine and are installed by pulling the "valvestem" through the puncture so the it seals against the inside of the tire and the excess on the outside is trimmed off.
