$525 for a new DVD nav disk??

Just got off the phone with my dealer and he said a replacement DVD nav disk for an '06 911 is $525! I thought it was going to be around $300 (and that's still overpriced). Is this a ripoff? Any other ways to get a nav DVD for an '06?

A little background here...I just moved back to the states from the UK and had a european disk previously. My car is a US spec '06 911 S.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Re: $525 for a new DVD nav disk??

I wonder if there is an underground online repository of those dvd images somewhere? I know for TiVo, for example, those underground repositories exist of their software image!

Re: $525 for a new DVD nav disk??

    have someone copy it

    Frickin' stinks.

Is it pure and simple robbery, or is there some justification for the excessive cost?

I never thought I'd support bootlegging until reading your post.

Where's the original disc? Can you just borrow someone else's?

Re: $525 for a new DVD nav disk??

I can't believe they will not simply EXCHANGE the Euro DVD for a N. American one. Do you still have the European disk? Why can't a global company support a global customer???

    here's a reason or 3

Licencing of map data is a real cost and varies from country to country and provider.

Concept of "exchange" with dealer just doesn't work like that.. you are using multiple different products otherwise you sound like you expect some sort of perpetual supply of multiple products for a single initial purchase..

Please try the same logic with your dealer when swapping cars and see where it gets you ;-)

I agree with cost though, is a lot compared with aftermarket equivalents where choice is extensive but then they DO have you locked in with a factory system after all..

You can check your licence agreement of the data to see if you have rights to resell and pick up another but unlikely to find legit seller (if legally possible) of latest maps that you are after.

And despite any price.. just don't steal by looking for "underground" copies.. you DID pay for your car didn't you? I mean it IS an expensive thing too and heh should be yours for half price as well just because you think so right? lol

    enjoy.

Re: $525 for a new DVD nav disk??

My NAV is just not very good. It's not as good as my cheap hand-held Nav. I don't plan to buy an upgrade. I plan to use my hand-held.

Yeah, therefore, in this modern world where ethics and morality are on a sliding scale, there's no reason they shouldn't extort you.

    Re: here's a reason or 3

I called the maker of the DVD (Navteq, www.navteq.com) and they told me that they could sell me an '05 or '04 DVD but not a DVD for the '06 version of PCM. They said it had to come from the dealer. My dealer looked into it and has to order the DVD from Germany. He laughed when he told me the price becasue he knew it was outrageous. Apparently there is no part # for the DVD yet since they come with each car delivered to the states...not sure where that leaves us or guys in a situation like mine.

I asked about trading mine in and the dealer again laughed because he didn't know what he would do with it. I think I'll offer it up on Ebay if nothing else. (A US original DVD just sold for $215)

While I don't want to be a bootlegger...but $525 extra for a system I paid for and can't use is ridiculous.

Whoa...even though it's minor, the more I think about this, the more pissed I get. I've got to do what I did when I bought this car and spend the money with my heart and not my mind! Still puts a sour note on it all.

Oh..and when it came to shipping my car back to the states, I had to do it all myself...no dealer would give me any help whatsoever (UK or US). They need to learn a little customer service from BMW. I'm not too keen on the dealships these days...

    Re: here's a reason or 3

Yes pity about the high cost..

Would be interesting to know if price is same across all dealers? Hopefully not being gouged by just one.

If consistently the same then possible and reasonable explanation might be specific formatting needed by supplier to fit Porsche system and then only to have relatively low volumes hence higher unit price compared to mass-market handhelds you might compare as providing "the same".

Of course if hardware is Bosch (let's say) then you'd expect volume deal might be struck by them with (say Navteq) so at least even as Porsche customer you might see some benefit from volume pricing.

Wonder what the hardware is in the car.. anyone with manual know? or anyone poked around hardware to see any known brand?

We do maps and car tracking software in Australia - see www.findmap.com.au - so know something about the relativities of scale and cost of such things in smaller markets lol

    Alex.

    Re: here's a reason or 3

Image it with the latest version of Toast ..... when they try to charge too much they are just asking for piracy .

    Re: here's a reason or 3

No DON'T "image" it.. that's just STEALING it.

You don't HAVE to have NAV you know.. it's an option you consciously tick and like most people you would have researched options before you buy.. like does it come with perpetual updates? no? then you find out how much ok.. don't like the price then don't buy, find alternative etc

Is everything in your house paid for?

If your furniture isn't stolen then don't steal other things like extra cost options for your car such as latest maps, maps for other countries..

    Re: here's a reason or 3

Lots of morality being spewed about "stealing" , most of the dealers I know have the morals of a snake, sort of humorous when they charged me $500 for an oil change and one is supposed to be worried about stealing LMFAO, oops , Im going to hell

    Re: here's a reason or 3

    Emule ..edonkey ........etc.....

    Re: here's a reason or 3

yeah, I can understand you feeling that way if stuck with only a single dealer who overcharges hugely, if that's the case.

When I compared service prices on my BM I moved to another dealer who did the same authorised service for wayyy less than someone who I felt was simply charging too much for simple stuff and the only difference I could see was the cheaper dealer didn't have fancy coffee and pastries in their high class waiting room to "give away".

    Re: here's a reason or 3

I say steal/bootleg it! The Porsche Nav system sucks anyway. There's much cheaper handheld ones that are more user friendly. Would be worth the excess cost if the system was "Excellent."

    Ebay $215

I just did a very quick look on Ebay and found a vendor selling the NAV dvd for MY2006. Be careful, these may be original copies but others for sale may just be copies of an original DVD and not actually an original DVD, etc.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2006-Pors...69611QQtcZphoto

    Re: Ebay $215

be way careful. it's my understanding that porsche elected to not incorporate bluetooth technology in it's phone system for fear it would be possible to bluetooth a virus into the electrics. obviously on way complicated and interconnected electrical systems this has the potential to turn your car into a shopping cart. it would seem a bogus dvd could function similarily.

Re: $525 for a new DVD nav disk??

This was among the reasons why I didn't want and didn't order Nav on my Club Coupe. And down the road when updates are non-existent or rarely issued, what good is it, then?

I just got a new A6 for a daily driver, and it has Nav (not an ordered car) also by NavTech. It doesn't even know there's a freeway exit 2 miles west of my house, even though it's been there for something like 5 years. And I have the most current disk.

I didn't want nav either, but that would have meant several more of the numerous buttons would have been useless. Now that I have it I realized it's kinda fun. I now find interesting back roads I drive past but never knew were there.

Still..., I was surprised that it's not very user friendly.

Had I seen this post/thread earlier (and others) I would have probably not ordered it.
