    A drive in the 997tt

Just spent about an hour seat time in the 997tt that will be mine (6 speed).

The other reviewers who have posted about their test drives are spot on with their comments. I would just like to add a few thoughts:

    1) turbo lag is still there - but tamed over a stock 996tt.
    2) the car felt quite "involving" - the sound isn't bad, but is muted
    3) handling, steering & brakes are fabulous, as expected
    4) suspension is firm but very controlled and the biggest surprise is when you select PASM sport mode. On my Boxster, selecting PASM sport mode is an invitation to a terribly choppy ride on normal roads - it is only good for very smooth tarmac. But on the turbo, sport felt perfect to me - firm, but not harsh and incredibly well controlled. The 997tt's PASM is a huge improvement over the stock 996tt's suspension, which I felt was overly harsh yet had too much vertical motion in the curves. With PASM on sport, the 997tt has perfect turn in and control in curves. The car feels smaller than it is - more like my Boxster.
    5) The car is deceptively fast, a few very short bursts of acceleration (while keeping the revs under 4200) had me easily 20 mph over the speed limit. This is a car in which the driver will have to be careful not to intimidate lesser cars by coming up on them too quickly.

WOW, pretty much sums up my seat time.

And BTW, it's road presence and visual impact is much more like the 993tt than the 996tt. In "pure" black the car is just breathtaking.

Re: A drive in the 997tt

Congrats! Sounds fantastic. I have to wait until December/January for mine but will be waiting in anticipation. Blacks a great look. I had been thinking Basalt, would you suggest not? Cheers

Re: A drive in the 997tt

    Very nice indeed and congrats.

    What color?

Re: A drive in the 997tt

Congrats Alan, waiting is nearly over for you!

Yeah, I had my doubts when I read some mags reporting the power of the turbo was as instantaneous as flipping a light switch.

It's instantaneous as long as you're in the right gear

but if you're cruising along on the low RPM side and nail it, you knwo you're in a turbo. One thing, though, this car "comes alive" so fast that you can really ovetake others almost unintentionally. And with sportchrono engaged, I was really suprised by the pull.

I still hate the radio controls, though lol

I had no doubts - a turbo is a turbo. They will always feel different (not necessarily worse - but definitely different)...

Given that the torque curve is flat from 1900RPM on up, that means that there will not be turbo lag if you are above 1900RPM, AND, since one should never drive these cars below 2000RPM anyway, there is no turbo lag, for all practical purposes.

Re: A drive in the 997tt

I appreciate the unemotional objective review. No doubt the 997TT is a terrific car and you will enjoy it. I always felt the cabin was somewhat small. However, it may be related to my penchant for convertibles.

Do you still have your Boxster?

Re: It's instantaneous as long as you're in the right gear

Considering the people who have driven it says it does have some turbo lag, I think it still exists to some degree.

I certainly give the benefit of the doubt to all who just test drove the new TT... and will reserve my judgement until (soon) I will test it myself. However, I also draw from my observation of seeing people driving around 996 TTs like their grandmother's oldsmobile... that is, often below 2000 RPM.

The 996 TT had a noticeable Turbo lag, but its torque curve only flatened above 2600RPM a normal day-to-day shifting region - and I considered that unpleasant. When I see the torque curve brought down below 2000RPM, it is a totally different story. So, whoever routinely drives below 2000 should shift patterns, or consider a different car. Just my 2 cents.

Re: It's instantaneous as long as you're in the right gear

Congrats Alan Looking forward to some pics.

I read that there is "turbo lag" in the manual, but not as much as the 996TT. It also said that there is an even less noticable lag in the tip, since there is less time between gear changes, as opposed to the manual.

Re: It's instantaneous as long as you're in the right gear

When atomic80 drove the car, he mentioned that the Tiptronic seemed to have more lag than the manual, not the other way around.

Re: A drive in the 997tt

I reluctantly let the 987S go - a terrific car

    basalt black will be wonderful

I prefer the non-metallic black, but basalt will be easier on the upkeep

Re: basalt black will be wonderful

Just out of curiosity, even though the engine can make full torque @ 1950, is it at all times? what I am asking here is, if the turbos arent kicking as hard as they can; will u still be waiting for a spool up surge in torque?

No. The car will simply feel like it had a very big N/A engine. Instead of kicking in at 3000 rpm, it will make a pretty smooth transition to full torque.

One reason why I changed my order from non-metallic black to basalt black. Learned my lesson from my previous 997 Carrera S (plain black).

The only reason I sadly went for basalt as well

Probably a silly question but wouldn't the increased throttle response of Sport mode not offset the perception of Turbo lag slightly also?

It doesn't quite work like that.

Turbo lag arises during the transition from low load (closed or partly open throttle) to high load (wide open throttle) engine operation and not necessarily at the transition from steep part of the torque curve to the flat part of the torque curve.

Meaning: engine speed can be above 2000 rpm at partly closed throttle, but you would still notice some lag if you stamped on the throttle pedal.

Re: It's instantaneous as long as you're in the right gear

A good recirculating/blow-off valve would help.

Re: basalt black will be wonderful

less work to keep clean ? less swirl marks ?

Yes. And to again reveal my own bias, a little turbo lag is sort of cool, it makes the car feel faster since the thrust at high boost accelerates the car parabolically, giving the legendary 911Turbo "slingshot" or "pinned-to-the-back-of-your-seat" effect as acceleration rate (as well as velocity) increases. Can't wait to drive one to see how it compares to the 996Turbo's.
