Add option #666, phone module or not

I'm wondering what you folks think. Should I add option 666 to my order? I currently use the Blackberry 8700 which has a sim card that is very hard to remove easily. It seems like it'd be inconvenient for me to have to remove/install the sim card. The only reason why I'm even considering it, is because I hear better using any sort of a car speaker system such as the Bluetooth in my Range Rover. I'm hearing impaired so any help that I can get from the electronics is appreciated.

Why did Porsche leave the Bluetooth out of their cars anyways? The salesperson says that they didn't want viruses transmittable via Bluetooth technology to get into the electronics.

Re: Add option #666, phone module or not

Rather than moving the SIM all the time, get another sim and phone and leave it installed in the car. Then set your BB to call-forward to the car's number when it is out of range (it's actually a service from your cell carrier) and turn off the BB when you get in the car. It's not that much money compared to what your Porsche will cost.

I've been doing this for a couple of years as I carry a GSM BB w/bluetooth for biz, which works globally, but prefer to use my personal CDMA phone. I forward the the CDMA to the BB, then turn it off when I'm in the car or overseas. No one ever knows and all the calls find me.

    Good Thinking. Great idea!

Re: Add option #666, phone module or not

That's a GREAT idea! I'll definitely do that when I get the car! Do you have the same number for both SIM cards or did you have to open another account for the Porsche SIM card with a new number?

Re: Add option #666, phone module or not

I'm definitely getting the phone module and will open another account to put a SIM card in the car.

I love the way these car phone systems mute the music and show the incoming number on the dash.

However, being a multi-line kind of guy similar to Scotty (with both CDMA for voice and BB for data), there are still shortcomings in our setups.

Unfortunately, I doubt I can have the same number on the SIM card and too bad cell providers don't offer a service that can auto-forward SMS text messages. I'm curious how well the SMS function works in the car.

No answer transfer is fine, provided you do not have voice mail. With voice mail, you have to do a universal forward instead of just turning it off. And you have to remember to cancel the forwarding.

Alternatively, you can have your existing well known number transferred to a SIM card, leave it in the car, and have out-of-range transfer to your BB (with a new SIM and new number). This way, you do not have to worry about forwarding, pressing any buttons or turning whatever device off.

However, this also means you will not receive text messages sent to your old number until you drive the Porsche.

You can block your new BB number so that you do not confuse your contacts. Unfortunately, some places do not accept restricted callers. The reality is that once you start texting with the new SIM in the BB, people will notice the new number and soon you'll be stuck with two numbers both associated with you.

Ask me, I'm used to all the complication involved, my 997TT will be my third line!

By the way, I'm the guy in Vancouver you once picked up a V1 for. Last time we met you took some nice photos of the dark blue SL500 I had.

Re: Add option #666, phone module or not

Eric!!!! I remember you quite well. Nice to see that you're picking up a Turbo as well. What will your specs be?

Thanks for your tips on the SIM card issue. I'll have to see if it's possible for me to have one number programmed to two SIM cards.

I've heard this can be done, but obviously it's not approved by your service provider/carrier ..

I'm going to check into it..

Re: Add option #666, phone module or not

Well, I just found out that because I added 666 to the order, my car production got bumped from August 1st to October! "666" really is bad luck...so my advice to you guys is NOT to change your order once it's been set.

Re: Add option #666, phone module or not

In the UK, only Vodafone do multi sim which meams I have the same number on two sim cards, one in the car and one in my mobile. Just have to select one or other so three clicks on my mobile when I get in or out the car is all it needs.
    (V. expensive charge rates, though)

Re: Add option #666, phone module or not

Appreciate the warning Jason, in that case, I think I'm sticking with my black leather instead of natural dark grey leather then.

    My boring spec:

    P70/2007 (July production)
    997 Turbo Coupe Tip
    Arctic Silver Met
    blk full lthr
    adaptive sprt seat
    Sport chrono pkg turbo
    Park assist
    Crest in headrest
    Module for telephone PCM
    Floor mats

I think the phone option is worth the delay, besides, you can still enjoy the car in the winter!

And please, feel free to check out my car when it arrives.

August 1st? So who was going to build it, the seven dwarfs? Are you sure the option change is responsible for the delay? I would definetely check again with your dealer.
