    1986 911 Cab Problem...

    Hey guys,

My dad owns a 1986 911 Cabriolet with only 14,000 miles on it, which I mention because this could be the root of the problem. We were putting the convertible top down and the top stops halfway. We tried it again and it wont budge, manually or with the motor. I did not want to force it down or up because I do not want to break anything. Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem? I was thinking we stripped the gears but when the button is depressed I dont hear any motors spinnging, just a single "click". Could it be a fuse? Any ideas are welcome...also, where would the fuse box be located on the 1986 model.

    Re: 1986 911 Cab Problem...

Also, could this really be from sitting and not being driven/used...?

    Re: 1986 911 Cab Problem...

I remember a problem from back then when the arms broke. These were made from titanium or unobtainium, either way it was very expensive. I would not try to force this and get it to a repair shop right away. Load on flatbed and go.

Though you probably know the answer, Porsche930S, I'll say it anyway:

Yes, underuse is a possible factor.

If memory serves me correctly, on an episode of the TV Show, Everybody Loves Raymond, Frank comments about the basement bathroom with the "special" engraved hand towels reserved ONLY for guests. Frank remarks to someone that Marie is waiting for the time when the Pope visits and needs to take a dump!

Achtung! Ve haf therapee in progress:

Till today, I remember looking at locked, glass-door cupboards filled with "precious" crockery and cutlery my mother had purchased from her travels. Many of these items had less to no mileage compared to your Dad's 911. Sometimes, while passing by, I would pause, peer through the glass, remember the unintelligible answer received upon positing the query, "Mom, why don't we ever use those things?" and experience the following emotions:

In stark contrast, my father had the opposite philosophy when using the family car.

Today, neither of them have changed. However, I when I hear about above average odometer readings, when I or someone else dings a car door and could not, in the immortal diction of my American history teacher, give a "rat's ass", if I heard someone break all the crockery in the house by sheer chance event. LOL.

    Re: 1986 911 Cab Problem...

I totally agree. It is a waste and a pity for it not being driven. I have told my dad this many times throughout the years. Problem is, I was the one putting the top down, therefore...it is my fault for it breaking...I can see the connection and the reason for him thinking so and I accept it, but I am not the one who let it sit for too long. We have been trying to get it to the repair shop but both of us have been too busy with work (I work at the Porsche dealership here in town, but ironically I cant get it here because I cant drive the car on the interstate because the top would "parachute"). This week hopefully it will get fixed.

I was also not allowed to touch the "locked up" dining sets. I tend to spill things and have slippery fingers...

What is the operating procedure for putting the top down? Do you unlatch and then press a button or just press a button?

Please help me understand for I fail to see the connection.

    Re: 1986 911 Cab Problem...

You just press a button on the dash and it folds down itself as you hold the button. No latches, just unzip the plastic window. It stopped and now will not move.

    Re: 1986 911 Cab Problem...

I heard that 86 was the first (or maybe second) year for the power top. Supposedly, the earlier cabs are highly prized for their manual tops (far less trouble and expense). I heard these repairs can be VERY expensive - I hope not in this case...

Ah! I see. As a self-proclaimed "slippery fingers," (Dr. Evil's new henchman) your finger may have slipped off the button while trying to hold it down utterly destroying the 20 year old mechanism.

Where do I buy tickets for your crucifixion?
    Any last request?

    Re: 1986 911 Cab Problem...

I don't think it slipped, but famous last words. I've been praying for a fuse or anything...but from what I have been hearing I don't think I will be so lucky.

So, yes, I may have done wrong, but the top would of been put down eventually or at anytime in the future...so it would of happened then? Atlease give me that thought! That it was just ill timing and if my dad did it the same thing would of happened?

    Re: 1986 911 Cab Problem...

Dont feel bad. They all can do that. It could be a motor, a gear, or any part of the folding mechanism could have gone askew.

    Re: 1986 911 Cab Problem...

I know. I came into work and I told the service manager about it and his first reaction was "Eww...". Comforting!

I was being sarcastic, Ben. My point was/is even if your finger slipped off the button a hundred times, I, imho, do not believe it's your fault. The rotten mechanism is two decades old and I doubt, even on day one, it was a paradigm of reliability.

    Re: 1986 911 Cab Problem...

I know, and I thank you for helping me out MAV. I will hopefully get it in soon to be looked at.

    Re: 1986 911 Cab Problem...

    You're welcome, Porsche930S.

    Re: 1986 911 Cab Problem...

    Hi 930S

I experienced the same problem with my 930S cab about a month ago. Have you loosened (a few turns) the 2 bolts behind the black plastic caps in the side panels adjacent to the rear jump seats ? This worked for me and I was able to manually lower the top.
My problem is that I haven't been able to locate the fuse for the motor to see if it's blown. I'm wondering if it may be on a shared circuit. I don't have a wiring diagram for the 86 930S.

    Re: 1986 911 Cab Problem...

Our 911 does not have the rear jump seats but instead a big audio system.

I just dropped the car off at the shop...should be getting a call later...praying its just a fuse or something minor!

Things your parents didn't want you to touch + messing up your dad's mint Porsche?
Are you sure you are not Tom Cruise and out doing risky business?

In that case: Throw a party, invite 50 friends and 20 hos...and problem solved

    Re: 1986 911 Cab Problem...

    * Check wiring. (You said there was no sound from roof motor)
    * Check fuse
    * Try Mo2 lubricant spray on the gear/lever of the roof
    * Check for USOs (Unidentified Stuck Objects) in gears/lever
    * Check your daddy's pulse
