    PWRS (NZ) + switch 997 Turbo ---> 997 GT3 (my reasons)

    Porsche World Road Show (NZ)

    I attended the show a few weeks ago and it was a real credit to Porsche how every single invitee was so absolutely impressed. Here's a few brief comments.

    The drivers: Factory / Carrera Cup / Other pro's - they were all amazing. We had a wet track. Some of these factory guys got themselves into perfectly controlled drifts at 140km/h and exiting the corner at close to 100k - a bit like they were on a Sunday afternoon drive. They also did this in a power upgraded Cayenne Turbo. (4 people in the car and having it going sideways at over 100k).

    The cars: A good variety (no 997 Turbo / GT3 / CGT) - but everything else was there. The power upgraded C2 was an amazing drive; around the same power as a 996 GT3 (~380bhp) and it really put a smile on everyone's face.

    PSM: with the car in sport mode I was impressed at the amount of 'play' it gave you, especially on power oversteer when compared to 996 PSM.

    PCCB: 2 track cars had these on. Both cars only have several thousand k's on them yet the PCCB's sounded dreadful (Cayman and Carrera). It was like they had sand grinding in them. To save ?20kg of un-sprung weight & with that noise and cost - no thanks!

    Why I'm going to change to a 997 GT3 instead of a 997 Turbo:

    Background: I've been waiting at the top of the dealer list for a 997 Turbo and my two requirements when placing the order over two years ago was that it had ~500 bhp and a PDK/DSG box. Naturally the car is perfect in almost every respect except for old technology gear box options. IMO tip is old (and will be imminently superseded), and manual is dead. I don't like the non-ROW ride height (this is purely stationary aesthetics and obviously PASM created). It just seems to lose some of its aggressive stance - although I agree this is a minor point.

    997 GT3, with its power/weight (or engine litre) ratio is amazing. Every 996 GT3 ride / drive I've had has left more of a smile on my face than the TT. Combine that with GT3's TC, PASM, and a car that is more 'pure' than a TT, plus the fact I don't need a daily driver, all leads to GT3. There were quite a few discussions on the "future direction" of Porsche, and I have to say that Porsche is clever in expanding its client base. It creates a GT3 and a Turbo that both appeal to a wider audience. I find myself slipping into what is the now wider GT3 clientele section.

    I believe in a little patience. We (P clients) are dealing with what is primarily a Corporate. I believe they will have PDK ready for the GT3 in no time at all and any release delay (for GT3) must only be posturing. My money's on waiting for a 997 PDK GT3. If I was going to drive the car every day I would probably wait for a PDK Turbo (or get a 997 GT3 and pick up an old boxster for a runabout).

    For anyone not yet done a PWRS it is a must!

    Re: PWRS (NZ) + switch 997 Turbo ---> 997 GT3 (my reasons)

    i think that a gt3 with pdk would be the most fun car to drive ever...but then i think that if i lived in germany i would pick a turbo,its a country where GT capability in a car are a must..

    Re: PWRS (NZ) + switch 997 Turbo ---> 997 GT3 (my reasons)

    I would have done the same choice as you.
    GT3 rocksssssss...

    Re: PWRS (NZ) + switch 997 Turbo ---> 997 GT3 (my reasons)

    Idealy I would like a GT3 997 without the back wing ...so it could be my daily driver!!!!!

    Re: PWRS (NZ) + switch 997 Turbo ---> 997 GT3 (my reasons)

    I'm not sure how somebody moves from a 996 C4S with PSM to a 997 GT3 without PSM. I hope you know what you're doing.
    Regarding PDK: If you have time to wait, no problem.
    I would ONLY choose the GT3 if I would be on the track very often. The 997 Turbo is a little bit too heavy for the track and I'm sure that it is going to be easier to adapt the GT3's PASM to certain track conditions than it would be possible with the 997 Turbo. But for the street, the 997 Turbo is a different beast. If you really want to go for something "extreme", go for the 997 GT3 RS.
    From a monetary point of view, the GT3 is in my opinion the best deal you can get from Porsche. It is much cheaper than a 997 Turbo and it isn't much more expensive than a well equipped 997 Carrera S. Definetely the best choice.
    But remember: if you wanted a 500+ HP Turbo and PDK, you should ask yourself why you suddenly are happy with less. This doesn't make much sense in my opinion.
    Don't get me wrong, some people think that I want to "lure" everyone to buy a Turbo but this isn't true, I went through that "what car suits me best" routine too before I've chosen the Turbo. But I don't quite see how somebody moves from a 996 C4S to a GT3, especially because you were so keen about the new PSM setup. TC isn't the same thing and trust me, it is pretty easy to crash a GT3 if you don't know what you're doing.

    Here's a quote from Panorama

    in the May 2006 issue they discuss the 997 GT3.

    "At the end of the day, the question comes down to compromises. Not in the GT3, which is firmly committed in the ultra high performance arena, but in the Porsche buyer. If you accept the fact that no more than 5% of the motoring population should contemplate a Porsche of any kind as a daily driver, consider that of that exclusive group only 5% should go for a GT3 (fewer than that if you are hoping to be regularly accompanied by a significant other)."

    Alan, the GT3 is a great car. I would buy one in a second if I had the money for two Porsche sportscars. One 997 Turbo for allday driving and one GT3 for some fun on the track, maybe with some serious amateur ambitions later on if things work out fine. But I'm not new to the Porsche world, I saw and heard so many things and I met so many owners in the past since 1996. Most of the GT3/GT2 buyers I met regretted their purchase later on, for several reasons. A good car doesn't make you a good driver and a challenging car may be even less satisfying since you may enjoy it's nice sound, it's stiff chassis and many other emotional goodies but at the end you realize: what the heck...this car isn't easy to drive at the limit. And the truth is: this applies to almost all Porsche models, especially with sports chrono activated and PSM off. Not to talk about the cars equipped with TC only like the new 997 GT3. Remember that Walter Röhrl crashed a CGT during testing and his comment afterwards? Remember Ben and his CGT? A 997 GT3 is not a toy, it is a half-bred race car with street approval. This doesn't mean that the 997 Turbo is safer, it may be even more dangerous because you actually don't really feel the speed you're travelling at. But a 997 Turbo still has AWD and especially PSM. The GT3 doesn't. Any mistake can mean a crash, lots of money going down the drain and maybe somebody's health too. Not worth it. For some track fun and some weekend fun driving, the GT3 is surely the way to go but only for drivers who know what they're doing. Maybe I'm just getting old but I love the "comforting" thought of PSM and AWD in my car. Maybe I've seen too many tragedies in my past. BTW: the worst 911 Turbo accidents I saw in the past usually happened on wet pavement (rain) on the Autobahn. Never saw that many people crash their cars on dry pavement like GT2/GT3 drivers. Interesting.

    Re: Here's a quote from Panorama

    My 996 Turbo is very safe; it equals (or beats) 996 GT3s and GT2s on the NBR without any fuss. I appreciate the safety but it is too easy to drive fast near the limit. And too heavy for regular track use.

    A 997 GT2 is more interesting than a GT3 or a Turbo, and with PSM it is still reasonably safe.

    AUM

    I guess a partial answer is here (below). Your point is obviously a very valid one. Given the GT2 now has PSM, I wonder if it's a matter of time? If the GT2 offered the same relative value as a GT3 ...

    Hopefully I can retain the correct amount f respect for the GT3 when driving it at all times!

    What suprised me most: even with TC and no PSM at hand, the 997 GT3 feels fool-proof. One has to do a lot of stupid things to make this car leave the track, it is a perfect toy, especially for skilled drivers but "beginners" will have an easier approach than with older "GT" models.
