Oh yes, like they did with that "exploding wonder" M3 engine... I'm waiting to see how the new V10 engines perform after a year or two.

Aw come on, Crash, aside from a history of exploding engines, feeble torque, SMG box glitches, fade-prone brakes w/sloppy pedal feel, sloppy steering feel, dubious crash test scores, small gas tank and low MPG, and inept air cond systems, I'm sure M5/6 are ultimate driving machine "values" for those oh-so-shrewd, price-conscious buyers, w/cheap MSRP, easy availability, BMW's 2 yr, $0 down leases and free mtce.....and they have 500+hp!!!!!

Yes, you're right. I was being much too harsh, my bad.

Re: Engine of the Year 2006

I don't man in 2002 several hundred M3 blew their engines. I know because my friend is an attorney his client's M3 engine blew with 3K on the car. The dealer said it was due to abuse and the warranty would not cover it. The attorney contacted BMW in Germany and learned they had several blown engines. Guess what, he went back to the dealer with that info and they fixed the car without asking any more questions?

Yes. My cousin just sold his E46 M3. He was on his third engine. They fixed the flaw late in the model cycle, so I don't know how that engine received the numerous awards for technical excellence.
That's like designating a drug, that cures all your symptoms, makes you feel great, but then kills you, effective.

There is a law firm in FL which specializes in lemon law litigation involving cars. The owner of the firm was interviewed and asked which manufacturer was the worse to deal with. Guess who. PORSCHE!

    The best. BMW.

Re: Engine of the Year 2006

What does that have to do with engines? I think your just looking for an excuse to knock Porsche which is lame. Ben

Re: Engine of the Year 2006

I believe the M3 (S54) engine has been on there at least in one category since it was introduced - interesting eh?

I was just driving the M3 the other day, usually i drive the SMG in automatic, but i slid it into manual, revved it all the way to redline - it purrs at idle, but like all (ok - most) BMW engines - it has a vicious edge when pushed...

Same for the M5 - sounds terrible at idle - i bet more than one person in HK thinks I am a poseur driving a rebadged diesel...

Re: Engine of the Year 2006

And you expected an intelligent answer from a lawyer?

It had to do with engines. Most if not all issues involve the engine. You are aware of the RMS problem?

Re: Engine of the Year 2006

    @nberry

Nick, this reminds me, what happened with that RMS class action suit?

Remember when that lawyer came on the p-car forums (he was on quite a few simultaneously)...

Was it just too much of a PITA and he got everyone all riled up for nothing?

    Cheers, Tom

Re: Engine of the Year 2006

I already knew this V10 would be the one!! As Moogle said, it does sound like a diesel engine.... I wonder if changing to Eisenmann mufflers would help but I guess that diesel sound is mainly from engine bay.....

    Hmmm, interesting.

From the point of view of a lawyer specializing in lemon law litigation against car manufacturers, the best car companies to deal with would be those which had lost so many suits in court in the past that they would immediately bend over when some lawyer threw a writ on their desk.

The worst car companies to deal with would be those which felt that they had such a good case that they would put up a robust defense against sleazy claims.

Or isn't that the point that you were trying to make, Nick?

Re: Engine of the Year 2006

I wouldn't be surprise if the number of M96 engines blowing would be bigger than the M3. Ever since 1997 Boxster and Carrera engine blow like hotcakes, at least BMW admited the problem.

They only admitted it after several years. My cousin had lots of trouble getting a replacement engine both times. I disn't hear of Porsche having that many problems with their engines blowing up.

Well you can choose the model, 997, 996 3.6L, 996 3.4l, Boxster 3.2L / 2.7L or 2.5L, there are several blown engines for all of them

Maybe the 997 would be more interesting to you

    Here's a funny discussion about a blown 996 engine and M3

Anyway, I believe with 997 they finally put it together, no more blown engines from this series, it still remains the sports car to beat

The engines in all these Porsches are basically the same, with differences in displacement. I'm glad they finally fixed it for the 997.
