    1/8 mile??

please anyone knows the time of a CARRERA S in the 1/8 mile? and the time in the 1/4 ? thank you very much

    Re: 1/8 mile??

0-60 mph in 3.9 sec. and 12.3 to the quarter with 5000 miles on the car (we got a 4.4 and 12.8, respectively, in a previous test with 1000 miles on the car. This was in the Car & driver Magazine last year.

    Re: 1/8 mile??

    3.9 sec? I thought the carrera S hit 0 - 60 in 4.8s?

    Re: 1/8 mile??

Porsche claims 4.6 sec for the 997S and 4.8 for the regular 997 and magazines have anyhing from 3.9 to 4.4. I was told by one of Porsche executives that Porsche's testing is very conservative as they drive their cars in a manner where an average driver should be capable of achieving the same results, meaning that a pro can eaily get better results. In all honesty I never clock my car and just run it against others when they challenge me. Nothing hostile just a friendly race here and there away from the crowd and traffic. However the fastest time can be achieved by speed shifting which I would not do as do not like to abuse my car. In case you are not familiar with speed shifting you simply will not let off the accelerator pedal when you depress the clutch, not a good thing for your clutch at all. To get the most out of your 997S, drive in the sport mode as you know, if you can get higher octane gas than 91, DO IT, it will make a difference. When you are standing still behind the light DO NOT release the clutch and then floor the accelerator, you will lose time that way before the engine reaches it's peak. You do not want to rev up behind the light either, it will make you look like a fool next to others, unless the other car is doing it also

So with the sport mode on, as you are ready to release the clutch rev the engine while releasing the clutch, do it fast, relase and rev at the same time. With the sport mode on, if you give it only a little gas the engine will automatically rev higher so be aware of this. No worries burning rubber in the 997, it does not happen that easily if at all. Stay on it and in the 1st gear until it reaches it's limit. I can usually feel and hear the engine without even looking at the tachometer. Your rev limiter will cut your engine out if you over do it but get to know your car shift before the rev limiter kicks in as it will set you back if you are racing someone and once the engine cuts out you will lose a couple of seconds. Shift swiftly and fast. Try to shift smoothly, one click, not click click, I have seen some people shifting in sort of a two step process, bring the shifter half way and then execute. If you just want to check the 0-60 by yourself, rev up the engine up and down and release the clutch when you are in high RPM's not low, as soon as the car begins to roll jump on it. I have shifted in a race without taking my foot off the accelertor and just dumped the clutch and shifted, the car would jump slightly ahead everytime but the clutch did not take it for too long

    Re: 1/8 mile??

Again, thankyou EDZ61, I need to learn how to drive this amazing car properly, but thanks for the tips!! Is there a video that shows the stuff you described above? - thanks!!

You are welcome. Keep in mind everyone has an opinion and everyone has a method. I am not a race car driver although I used to race a lot but I am not an expert I know what I know, right or wrong. You will learn something new from the gr8 members on this site everyday, that includes me too. However you will learn so much about your car and it's temprement and will have new appreciation for it's characteristics before you know it. I have been driving P-cars for 13 years and just love them. Like any other car P-cars have their limits, if you are not a skilled driver and make a mistake you will pay the price. Now costs for repairing a car while significant, they are not as important as one's life. So be safe my friend. I love driving fast myself and speed does not sacre me. But cops scare me and worse than that, endangering my life and others.

Drive your car fast when and where there is room and is safe and enjoy it even when you cruise in it. Driving a P-car is not just about racing, it' a life time experience that many are not fortunate enough to go through. Don't be so hung up on numbers, 0-60, 1/4 mile, etc. enjoy the feel, smell and the status

    Re: 1/8 mile??

Wise words EDZ61, I am quite young and its easy to get carried away as this is my first porsche - I understand the dangers of driving fast; and your right, drive quick only on clear roads and keep away from the police!! Any ideas on how I can learn more about my car safely?

    Re: 1/8 mile??

A young man in such an expensive car, you are a lucky man. You could try Porsche or BMW driving schools. They are both gr8:

    Re: 1/8 mile??

Thanks for that, I am going to try the porsche driving school. Any ideas on how to keep the engine as prestine as possible so that I can mazimize its power? I have heard people say that you shouldn't floor it in the beginning and then others say that it doesnt matter - I am quite confused on this issue!

    Re: 1/8 mile??

I just noticed you live in England, I have been there 10 times or more, I used to spend summer time in Bournemouth (SP??). Anyway up to the 1st 1000 miles, do not rev it up more than 4200 RPM. After 1000 miles rev it up high but for a very few short seconds, do not stay in the same gear and at the same RPM all the time, Alternate at different speeds and in different gears until you reach 2000 miles and then go for it, be safe

    Re: 1/8 mile??

WOW! I would never even think of shifting without letting off the throttle. The goal would be to re-engage the clutch before the revs dropped below the subsequent gear's rev match while simultaneously re-applying the gas.

You are correct, in the new cars the RPM's do not drop as drastically as they did in older cars many years ago. Speed shifting was always a way to cheat when the competition was close and the fastest way to ruin your car

    Re: 1/8 mile??

ok BUT MY 1/8 mile?!?! talking about runs... a time ago a raced with my CS a lancer evo of my friend.. his lancer have 340 hp.. from stand start.. 1st , 2nd gear , exactly on my side.. then in 3th gear the power of porsche talked louder and we had to stop because a red light. but i won for 3 meters.. little difference..

MY OPINION : for the price of the lancer it's is very strong... an option for who dont have much money and like SPEED... PORSCHE IS A DREAM CAR.

    Re: 1/8 mile??

No one really cares about the 1/8 mile, it comes at you so fast. EVOs are fast and if the driver is good it could keep up with the 997S in the 1st gear. Learn how to drive your car and you will blow him away once you shift in the 2nd unless his car his highly modified. We raced a new M3 VS an Evo and the evo took yhe M3 in the 1st gear, 2nd gear M3 pulled next to the Evo and 3rd gear the M3 pulled away. If you don't drive your car the way it should be driven anyone can mess with you. Evo is like a toy next to the 997

    Re: 1/8 mile??

    Its all about the driver!

    Re: 1/8 mile??

haha.. i do races all the time.. the EVO that im talking about is not a STOCK one... the stock has 280 hp
the EVO of my friend has 340HP! its very different.

    Re: 1/8 mile??

    in that case....

What's a M3 VS? Is it a "sports edition" and I assume it's not the CSL? Yes value for money EVO or even a WRX is fantastic value and one can do endless modifications, and would'nt cost to much to run with a CS in the first 3 gears but at the end of the day, you 'll have too live with cheap plastics, Jap build , ricer reputation.. I know, I have one of them

    Re: 1/8 mile??

HAHAHA my brother just bought the new WRX 2.5 here... he bought and tuned directly... now has 330 hp.. yesterday i did a test drive with him... Damn god that thing is very nervous! of course its a jap one.. but i like that monster appearence! hehe its other league... but its awesome

    Re: 1/8 mile??

Thanks Edz61, your words are inspiring and full of wisdom...you are a true example of a p-driver...

    enjoy...

Thanks bud, we are all a family here. There are gr8 people, gr8 drivers on this site who are very knowledgable, i.e. Ron Houston, R.C. and many others. I am learning something new every day.

    Re: 1/8 mile??

edz61, nice analysis there... since you are so close to me, next time you are on a track let me know, maybe I can come by and take a a lesson or two!
