    Definite Turbo S/GT2?

I think this is a repost, but I think I heard of a turbo-s that was definetly being released by porsche after the first model year or so, but does anyone know if p is planning a GT2 model for shure?
    Thanks

Rumours from here, and I think from rennteamers' sources in Germany, as well, are a definite TurboS, possibly for MY 2008 (? available late 2007 coupe, early 2008 cab) and unlikely before, and a maybe/maybe not for a GT2-I think RC posted recently that he heard rumours completely contradictory on this, but if Porsche follows 996 form, the GT2 would hit the market before the S.

There is nothing sure with Porsche, they plan many years ahead and they always leave a possibility to change their plans.
A Turbo S after the first year of 997 Turbo production doesn't many any sense. So this is very unlikely.
A Turbo powerkit option is more likely for the second model year, maybe not even that early. It really depends on the success of the 997 Turbo, if it sells well in the first and second model years, I doubt we'll see a powerkit before the third production year. The Turbo S is usually the model which is introduced to keep a certain model "alive" until the facelift or the new model generation arrives. This usually happens two years before the new model generation comes.

Regarding the GT2, there are confusing rumors coming from Porsche. Apparently some car magazines got the info that a 997 GT2 will NOT be made. But WE hear a lot of yes and no rumors, so I'd say that if the markets demand it, Porsche will definetely deliver a 997 GT2 pretty fast. But I doubt we'll see it before the third year of 997 Turbo production.

A GT2 would be basically a 997 GT3 with the 997 Turbo engine. So no matter what Porsche tells the press or what rumors we have, Porsche is capable of offering a 997 GT2 in no time, all the necessary parts are already developped and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Porsche already took a possible GT2 variant in consideration when they developped the 997 GT3/RS and Turbo.

    Re: Definite Turbo S/GT2?

IMO, Porsche had the right idea/concept with the GT2 lighter,RWD more power/more skill required by the driver.
more of the car to compete with gallardo/430 because as the 997 turbo will prob out perform both of those cars (hopefully) it really is a much different car.

the problem with the GT2 was Price to some extend, but more so too close to the other turbo/turbo S. If porsche had put the same HP/Lbs engine into a NA 8 and changed the body style to make the car almost its own car, rather than another turbo version, price the car 15% less in the US. I think that car would/could be a hit.

    That wouldn't be a 911 anymore.

In the new EVO they quote the head of R&D saying that there will be a GT2 coming

This is funny, a few weeks ago, it was a clear "NO".
I think Porsche is sometimes playing cat and mouse with the press and the reason is pretty simple: they don't want to give away their model lineup for the next years too early.
The only thing which is 100% sure is the Panamera. All the other models are in their development phase and can be still modified, changed, delayed or even be cancelled.

    Re: Definite Turbo S/GT2?

    that is the idea,
I think there are enough versions of the 911..
If Porsche can produce an SUV, Sedan, why not another sportscar "different than the 911"
the cayman S "appears" to be below the 911 in price, performace etc. why not something above, without the big gap to the CGT.

What do you think? Will Porsche allow this gap to stay empty? I doubt it. Hint, hint...
But I still think it will be based on the 911 in a way or another. Unless it may be a lighter, two-door variant of the Panamera but I think it wouldn't make any sense to speculate THAT far into Porsche future.

Why do people always want "something else than the 911"?
Don't like the looks? There is Ferrari, Lamborghini, ...

    Re: Definite Turbo S/GT2?

I don't want something else (right now)
I'm keeping my "old" 996 turbo
I was just talking about the "marketing space" of the GT2.
The point I was trying to make is: I "think" there is a mkt for a car postioned above the turbo/turbo S and some of the reasons/ideas maybe the gt2 did not sell that well in the US atleast.

    Re: Definite Turbo S/GT2?

The GT2 was too sporty for many people, not only in the US.
Some people thought that the combination of turbo power/torque is unbeatable but they had to learn fast that almost 500 HP in a car without AWD/PSM isn't quite easy to control. And it seems that some people still don't understand that a more powerful/sporty car doesn't necessarily make them faster too. On the contrary, it is my personal experience that most GT2 drivers even had problems to keep up with those GT3s and Turbos on the track.

And of course the GT2 was way too expensive in my opinion.
Almost 30-40% more compared to the 996 Turbo...ridiculous for a car which was actually basically a GT3 with 996 Turbo engine. Porsche went a bit too far with the price tag of the GT2. And the early change from the first MkI version to the MkII version also made a lot of customers angry. Especially since this upgrade wasn't retrofittable.

    Re: Definite Turbo S/GT2?

RC- what upgrade occured? I thought it was so minute that nobody even noticed....nobody seemed to care much here, which is a shame!

The step from the GT2 MkI to the MkII was huge, most GT2 MkI owners never realized that (or didn't want to realize it ) and Porsche kept the specs pretty much on a low level.
I always wondered why my dealer cancelled his (private) Carrera GT order and went for a GT2 MkII instead, I thought he is insane. But when I saw the car and when I checked out the results from the Sport Auto review, I understood. Only slightly more than 20 horses on the paper but in reality, all GT2 MkII have engines which deliver at least 500 horses. And the suspension has been improved too, deleting some of the minor flaws of the first GT2 generation.

Overall, I think that the 996 GT2 MkII is one of the fastest and almost "perfect" production cars, Porsche ever built. And funny enough, there are much less on the street than Carrera GT.
