Boxster 2.7 felt better than Boxster S

Hi guys dont normally post on here as drive a 997s ,but thought i would share my thoughts about the Boxster. My car is in the dealer having some work done so i drove a Boxster 2.7 manual, then next time a 2.7 tip, then today i get a Boxster S manual with sports chrono and 19"carerra s wheels .All the cars were basically brand new with only 2-3K on the clock.
Must say my first impression of the Boxster 2.7 manual was that it felt much lighter than my 997 and great fun to drive ,really felt confident flying into corners as the chassis was fantastic and balance maybe better than my car.
Next a drove the 2.7 tip and was actually pleasantly suprised that the tip gearbox was great fun and enjoyed the novelty factor as have always driven manuals.
Then today i get the Boxster S so i am very pleased as it also has sports chrono and 19 inch wheels.Car felt obviously quicker when pushed but overall not as quick as i hoped it would be.Also i felt the car seemed heavier and less nimble somehow than the standard Boxster on 18 inch wheels.
So to sum up i would recommend the standard Boxster probably with tip, thought it was a wonderful balanced car with superb handling

Re: Boxster 2.7 felt better than Boxster S

Interesting views robbo. Is it the case that the 987 you drove had a conventional suspension and the 987S you tried has PASM? That might account for the difference in feeling (i.e feeling heavier and less nimble).

    Could you clarify pls?

Re: Boxster 2.7 felt better than Boxster S

    987S - no tip.

    Enough said.

Re: Boxster 2.7 felt better than Boxster S

It also wasn't an apples to apples comparison by any means. Should probably have had a set of 18" wheels for comparison.

Re: Boxster 2.7 felt better than Boxster S

No PASM easyrider on any of the cars i drove.

Re: Boxster 2.7 felt better than Boxster S

The heavier wheels and brakes of the S can make it feel less nimble, imho...

Re: Boxster 2.7 felt better than Boxster S

If you want nimble over powerful, did you trade in your 997 for the regular boxster?

Re: Boxster 2.7 felt better than Boxster S

That it is an interesting thing you mentioned - apart from the subjective opinion it sounds remarkable that the std. Boxster doesn't seem to be that much off in regards of the whole package. In fact this model is lapping the Hockenheim short circuit about as fast as the 997S convertible - that should say something!

I really consider the 987 as a great and fairly price-sensitive option to get into sportscars, maintenance and running costs about the lowest of all "real" sportscars.
I have heard from various sources that the S-model isn't as fast and agile as its power figures suggest.

Re: Boxster 2.7 felt better than Boxster S

CS no i havent traded my 997s for a Boxster but nevertheless i just chose to share my views on the Boxster as i felt i had a chance to drive all three variants within a short space of time.As i said the Boxster is a superb car,and great value for money, but its still the perfect understudy to the 911

Re: Boxster 2.7 felt better than Boxster S

First Boxster 2.7 in cobalt blue

Re: Boxster 2.7 felt better than Boxster S

2nd Boxster in Arctic with tip

Re: Boxster 2.7 felt better than Boxster S

Some have said the 2.7 feels more "nimble" than the S, no doubt due to its lighter weight.

Re: Boxster 2.7 felt better than Boxster S

I've seen articles saying that the standard Boxster is a better deal and that the extra money you pay for the S isn't necessarily worth it for most people. It all depends on what you want to do with the car.
I don't think you would go wrong with the standard Boxster.

Re: Boxster 2.7 felt better than Boxster S

White dials, red brakes, and deeper, fuller exhaust are enough for me to justify the premium.

Oh I forgot, the extra power too.

The 2.7 Boxster is a great car - especially in the Boxster's prime domain (a string of twisties on countryroads) it provides as much fun as the 3.2 version and I guess the 3.2 would not pull away (the 2.7 pilot just has to rev the engine a little bit more).
Having said that I went for the 3.2 mainly for two reasons:
The better torque provides more comfort while driving in the city (I don't like to rev the car in the city) and it helps to pull away on the Autobahn at higher speed.

I agree with your comment: "It all depends on what you want to do with the car". If you're looking mainly for a "twisty carver" for the country roads, then you may save a lot of money and enjoy the 2.7 as much as an 3.2.

If you want to pull away from the well powered modern Diesel sedans with lot of torque on the German Autobahn, then the 3.2 is the way to go - of course this argument is unvalid in the US - high powered Diesel cars with tons of torque are not so popular and driving at Autobahn-speed is illegal

Now that's not a question of HOW to use the Boxster (city/country-road/Autobahn), but WHO buys it: for us crazy P-nuts your argument is 100% valid of course - but 95% of the buyers, who still enjoy their mental health might not understand it

Easy to cure: just get into your Boxster and go fo a spirited drive

Re: Boxster 2.7 felt better than Boxster S

The boxster 2.7 is a great car spoiled by awful brakes. I came from a 986 3.2S. The old S allowed you to brake late and hard. With the 2.7 I'm always reaching for the toilet paper.

For Tiptronic cars, Sports Chrono is a MUST. It enhances the Tiptronic experience a lot, providing a better throttle response, a more aggressive shifting behaviour, etc. Don't expect wonders but it works well.

I have 987, I feel the brakes are good, obviously aren't the best
