need technical help to open front hood !

My battery being dead, I took it out, closed the boot and went to buy a new one . Once back, just before trying to open my front bonnet , I realized i am in trouble . No battery, no automatic boot opening .Smiley

I know there is a way to open it manually , but I can't remember how . Looked into the owner ' s manual but could not find anything .

Who can help me  open my 997 front  hood ?

Oh, if I recall correctly there is a little wire hidden behind the front left wheel.

You should find a page in your driver's manual with the French equivalent to the heading "Emergency unlocking of luggage compartment lid....etc.", around about page 189.

If not, I could post an extract from an English manual explaining the procedure.

Also, I found some people just hooking the battery up via the fuse box or the cigarette lighter... That was for boxters though, might be different for current 991...

I can't remember offhand if that was still the case with the 997, as it had been with earlier 911s, but using jump leads and a battery or a power pack is easier.

The fuse box connection is available on the 997.1 and detailed in the driver's manual.

Yeah, similar stuff in the 996. Another veeery clever feature... heartmail

I didn't know there are no Porsche repair shops in Switzerland... yes angry

Last time the battery died on my 997 Turbo (battery was over four years old at that time and I was barely driving the car), I called my dealer and they sent someone over with a new battery. Install job was done in 10 minutes, the bill was OK as well, the dealership had not charged me for sending someone to my home (around 10 km away from the dealership).

I stopped working on my cars a long time ago, not worth the hassle and I really don't have the time for it (I barely have time to drive them, let alone wash them...my 991 GTS Cab hasn't received a proper cleaning job for over three weeks now angry).

Thanks for all the help . I looked into the booklet first but found nothing . After Fritz suggestion I did find the info near the end of the booklet .

Changing the battery myself saved me at least an hour o of waiting for a mechanic , or even worst, waiting for the next day .

And it took me also 10 min to do the job !

And the day I can not change a battery myself , will be the day I call myself old Smiley

Ha!  I was spared this (the emergency bonnet opening...) last summer; our 997 started having a series of PDK faults / errors that forced re-starts and weird behaviour; on researching I learned this was usually a false error due to low battery voltage - so I popped in a new battery and all was OK.  Funny because I usually replace all batteries at 4 years - the 997 was at 4.5 years as I was waiting till the autumn service to do it, and it turned out I should have stuck to my usual 4 years.

My car is now a few month over 7 years old. This is the second battery .

Whitehouse vehicles have their batteries changed at 24 month intervals. Two cold winters and two hot summers can really reduce your batteries capabilities. Just a hint.indecision

Re: need technical help to open front hood !

I have jumped my hood so many times I can do it in my sleep. The key is you need to use the remote to open the door once the donor battery is connected. The switch in the car to the left of the seat will not work.  Never ever will I be too old or too rich to pay someone to install a car battery.  It is just like replacing a battery in a remote or light bulb. Good grief.  Car dealers must love you guys who pay for that.  Maybe that's what I need to do to get my dealer to sell me a car.

Ps if you drive a 997 with intermittent battery issues, like it won't start when hot, then it is the ground wire from the alternator to the starter which needs replacing.

Gnil: if you have available an electricity socket in your garage, I recommend you to use CTEK trickle charger/battery maintainer. I have been using it for years ,works really well.

+1. Smiley  A good move for any car which is not driven regularly.

Re: need technical help to open front hood !

in August 15, I ditched my 60 AMP Porsche Moll battery for an 80 AMP Bosch battery.

I had no idea that GTx cars have a smaller (less powerful) battery, which makes big gaps between each use more of a problem.

In my 7.2 GT3, the battery tray has 2 'settings'; one for a full size 80 AMP (non GTx cars), and one for a shorter 60 AMP battery (GTx cars).

As sfo suggests, the GTx cars have smaller batteries, but there is room to fit a larger one if desired. Weight reduction cannot be achieved without compromises in some form.
