Sky and Sun both self insure their car insurance to give you an idea about their risk tolerance. On the XKR, we bought an extended warranty which was obviously going to be needed given their history, but it is not clear it's needed on a 991. Comments????

I don't know how much the extended warranty costs in the US but over here in Germany, it is around 1400 EUR I think.
In my opinion, it is worth considering getting the extended warranty the older the car actually is. You never know...

I have the extended warranty for my Panamera turbo. The last 6 month I have at least saved about 25.000 € of repair:
- all 4 dumper changed - had some cracking noises
- engine failure 1 - ignition coil
- engine failure 2 - ignition coil - I was 300 km from home, so tow away - rental car
- engine failure 3 - ignition coil
- engine failure 4 - ignition coil - after that they realized that it should be something different
- three weeks Porsche and my dealer have analyzed
- the have to put the engine out, to open it
- hydraulic tappets where stuck and some other minor parts
- last week in Milano, the steering pump breaks, tow away from Milano to Germany, rental car has to come from Germany to Milano, because in Milano they didn´t found any car for rental over New Year Eve
I have paid only 1200 €

I had all kind of rental cars but only a day or two until I came back home, where a Macan, Cayenne, Panamera or 911 was waiting for me. So no problem with that.
The funny thing is that it always happend just before long trips where planned, so I have made over 6.000 km with a foreign car (a new Porsche car).

Extended warranties can be worth it. These cars have so many complex features that to not have a extended warranty seems crazy. Just replacing or repairing a adaptive sport seat or the many ac/heater fans can get very very expensive.
And Porsche isn't alone on costly parts. A dead toyota prius key is $500.00 to replace. A aston Martin key is $200O !!
I'm beginning to think that car companies really are in the electrical parts business.

OK, I really tried to make any sense of what you just wrote but I couldn't.
My point was that over that six month period his car was either in the shop or going to and from the shop. So he really had no use much less reliable use of it. Maybe that helps.
I have had mixed luck with extended warranties. Most important is that they are going to still be around when you need them. In the US it can be a total rip off. Maybe one time I would buy from a dealer. Nah

Slightly off-topic but I've just been told, by my OPC, that extended warranties, in the UK, are now available on cars up to 15 years old - that's up from what had been 10 years old...
Can anyone verify this? Just wondering whether this applies wordwide..
