    Problem with PCM/CD-player

I have some problems with my PCM/CD player. After a couple of minutes of driving, the CD player (mp3-CDs) starts to have interruptions and after some of them, it tells me that it can't read my CD! I haven't tried a regular CD (non-mp3 that is) yet. Could it be related to mp3-CDs?

And once it wouldn't even eject the CD anymore. Only the other morning it gave it back to me.

Has anyone experienced similar problems? I saw the thread about CDs being stuck in the player. Did the ones of you who had that also experience interruptions too?

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

If yours is an early 2005 997, it will not be capable of playing MP3-CDs - and cannot be upgraded without changing the PCM head unit at immense cost.

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

PCM Porsche Stereos donot read MP3 cd's. It's a joke but its the sad truth.

Porsche is really loosing in it in lots of issues.

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

The 2006, and late 2005, PCM 2 installations do read MP3-CDs.

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

It does read mp3 for about 20 minutes each day but quits afterwards....

    Production date is late 11/2005.

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

    Matt,

Your car should be MP3 compatible - although, I understand that there are different MP3 download formats; however, as your PCM 2 seems to be capable of reading your discs, it is probably worth a visit to your local Porsche Centre as they may have a fix.

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

I never had a problem with them playing but about a month ago I tried to insert a cd and it just wouldn't go in. I have an appointment on Apr 18th and the service manager told me that they will likely have to replace whole pcm unit. Car will be out of commission for 2 days because they have to order theparts from Atlanta and ship to Canada.

My car is an 05 may build and it play mp3's.

    I wish mine would break

It won't play MP3s at all - It needs the newest update AND an ipod connector would be nice as well.....

Re: I wish mine would break

Guess I wasn't precise enough (probably due to my lack of English knowledge). It does read and play them for about 20 minutes and then starts having interruptions of varying length and frequency (from a couple of milisecs to a couple of secs). This goes on for a couple of minutes after which it stops playing completely and tells me that it can't read the CD. Removing and re-inserting (the same or another CD) cures the problem for just about a minute or two.

Re: I wish mine would break

Matt, seems obvious to me to try another mp3 disc and/or a regular CD. Your mp3 disc could have gotten scratched or gone bad somehow. You won't know if it's the P-car's player or your disc until you try other discs.

Re: I wish mine would break

Mine is a Feb 06 production car and it reads MP3 just fine.

Re: I wish mine would break

Mine was a classic failure of the PCM. Sucked a CD in and refused to work or give it back. Also it made the NAV crash. Basically it was a dead unit which re-booted itself a few times only to steal CDs and crash and die again.

The result was a complete us$2500 PCM replacement (warrenty paid for it).

Maybe just use regular store-bought CDs for a while and isolate the problem to see if it works okay.

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

    I have a Feb. 2006 - delivered 911S, and I have no problem playing MP3 formatted CD's.

At times, however, after inserting a disc, the radio still contiues to play. I have had to eject and re-insert the disc to get the CD player to start. And I have pushed the CD button several times during this process.

Also, at times, the disc will not eject on the first push of the eject button.

I have not yet had a disc stuck in the player.

By the way, I don't have the navigation package.

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

If it is under warranty, take it in - describe/demonstrate the problem - and they will probably just replace your system. This has been a commonly described problem on this and other boards.

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

Yes, this is a common problem. My CD got stuck and the PCM unit had to be replaced. Every once in a while radio cuts it. I believe this problem is fixed but going into the menu and shut off the traffick announcement setting.

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

    Thanks guys.

I will have it checked out by the dealer (which is what I would have done anyway, I just wanted to know if it has been experienced by others too.)

BTW, the problem is reproduceable with any mp3-CD. Haven't tried regular music CDs but will do that next.

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

My CD will cut out as well, now has also intermittently begun to flash the Porsche logo on and off without turning on either the radio or cd. Only turning off the ignition and starting again seems to rest this behavior. Going in to the dealer next week.

Yeah, don't let them jerk you around either. Took them three tries to finally change my PCM Completely. Wasted my time! This was about 4 months ago.

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

    I have a 997S 2006 and reads mp3s without a problem.
The other day I did have a problem I inserted a mp3 cd and it spit out a cup of capuccino, the problem was that it was decaff and it was cold...... back to the dealer !!!!!!

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

Did a test with a regular, store bought CD this morning. Everything was working fine. Seems that the quality of the CDRs is the reason for the problems (The ones I used weren't that cheap though).

Guess I'll have to re-burn my compilations on "high-end CDRs".

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

Has anybody had any experience of TDK CDRs? Good or bad?

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

Matt, per RC (another post), if you are using CD-RWs, they are not as compatible as CD-Rs. He also suggested closing the CD after one write session, i.e. don't leave it so you can add more tunes later. These suggestions "might" help.

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

My mp3 CD-R that I made and that's been playing in my P-car since November QUIT today! That'll teach me to post anything about mp3s.

    Re: Problem with PCM/CD-player

Seems that the speed of burning is the deciding factor. Did burn another CDR (I don't use CDRW) from the same package (Imation) but only with speed 1x. Et voilà, the PCM can read the whole CD without any interruptions anymore.

Guess I'll have to re-burn all my compilations, made during cold winter nights....

    VBR MP3 with PCM?

My 997 has the older PCM and can't play MP3s. Should I be so fortunate that it fails... I have a question for those of you with the later PCMs: can you play MP3s encoded with VBR (variable bit rate)?
