Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

I'll either get the Valentine 1 or the Bel RX65. Could anyone post some pics of what some of these look like mounted in the vehicles? Thanks in advance.

    JMShrink,

Keep in mind that there are other ways to integrate the unit. User AJcastaneda once posted a picture of an awesome rearview mirror setup from a custom shop. That setup is much more discrete than mine, you can't see anything from the outside...

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

From what i have read, i see that Carlos is the master of Radar Detectors...
I also have understood that Carlos (For Greece -And Europe) suggests Valentine V1 which can be bought only from USA.
I live in Greece also, but I will go a big trip now with my car (something like Gumball) and i will visit Prague-Monte Carlo - Firenze.

I dont need a portable Radar Detector though...
I know that are same radar detectors that goes under the front spoiler hidden.. Is valentine the best for me? and does it have such a version?!

    thank you !!

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

Aixos, I'm more than glad to help out if I can

The Valentine does not make a remote version. If you want a remote version for Europe, the best options are:

    - Bel966R: best overall value/performance, especifically made for Europe. Detects Ku, Ka and K bands. Sold by Target and only in Europe. You can get nice deals by purchasing through web to UK for example.

    - Bel975R: is de northamerican verison of the 966 but has the narrow Ka bands for europe, same range in warning disntaces as 966, more false signals than 966 due to different filtering software, does not have the ESP chip that filters interference of some GSM phones so mobile phones may cause falsing in some cases, but its cheaper to buy since it does not go through Target. You can purchase through web to the US, sometimes even EU in some places.

    - Stinger DSI computer: bigger warning distances than the 975 and 966, indetectable to radar detector detectors which is usefull in countries like Holand or France were they have the SPECTRE III RDD and detectors are highly illegal, high tech functions (its like a computer), GPS incorporated, etc... very pricey, around 1800 Euro . This is the one I have in my car currently. Purchase through your country's Stinger distributor.

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

so you believe that the best radar detector is the valentine (After yours which is really expensive) and if i need a remote version i have to buy Bel966R
    thank you very much Carlos

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

ok i just ordered a valentine 1 and a case for it....

The best "portable" is the Valentine (also the Bel550 is good too), and the best "remote" are the ones I listed. So it depends if you want a portable or a remote. Mine is remote.

Keep in mind that the Valentine is more versatile than other portables because it has a concealed remote display and audio accesories. This means that if you purchase the remote display and audio, you can place the actual detector anywere you like as long as it has a clear view of the road, but it doesn't have to be in "your" field of view since you can use the remote display and audio for visual and acustic alerts. Or you can purchase the rearview mirror display (aftermarket device, not original equipment) and use the rearview instead.

So you won't be disapointed. Just remember to configure it in Euro-mode qhen you get it.
Any other question let me know, always happy to help a fellow rennteamer

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

ok carlos i added to my order the visual addon.. not the accoustic though, in order to be able to place it maybe in front of my car if i want..
I believe that this radar also has a "Stealth" mode in case the laser points to me when i go really fast in order to place an error to the laser or to the radar. (that i may not see) from the errors etc...

that you again for your help..

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

Aixos, the Valentine is not waterproof so make sure you don't install it outside the car. There are some aftermarket weatherproof boxes for the Valentine so as to be able to place it behind the front bumper of the car, but if you do that you will loose laser detection, and also weatherproof'ability is not 100% ganranteed since its not a OEM part, its aftermarket.

I did not understand what you meant by "stealth mode". The only thing that comes up to mind is that the Valentine is the only detector that can detect the Laser Atlanta laser gun's Stealth Mode *. I don't believe this gun is used in Europe anyway. However the Valentine is only a detector, it does not jam or influence radar or lasers. In terms of laser "detection" the V1 is regarded as the best of all detectors.

    * Stealth Mode in Laser Atlanta works by sending only 2 consecutive pulses instead of the regular three. NOrmally to avoid false signals form other infrared signals, detector and laser jammers filter out any signals that had less than 3 pulses, since all the laser guns has 3 or more but false signals like ambulance lights would not, therefore they could filter out thse false signals. Laser Atlanta developed a mode for their laser gun that would throw no more than 2 consecutive pulses therefore fooling the detector into thinkng its a flase alarm. Currently most laser jammer have alreday updated their software to be able to pick up the stealth mode, and as for detector, I believe the V1 was the first one to do so as well, I don't know if the otehr have as well just recently. But is not a widely used laser gun and only in US, and also its complicated to get the laser gun into that mode so most cops don't even bother setting it in stealth mode.

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

Do you know of an impartial website that compares radar detectors ? I understand that a number of the comparison sites are fronts for (or at least tied to) various manufacturers.
If the Valentine is so good, I am surprised that my Porsche dealership recommends the K40. Incidentally, unlike the V1, the K40 has a jammer incorporated.

    Here you go....

This costs $2,000 US with labor and the unit itself. There are other options though - you can have the arrows mounted on the dials, in between the vents (on Mercedes vehicles)....this place allows you to have them wherever you wish.

Why would they recommend an antiquated K40 unit?

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

Carlos how does this Stinger compare to Valentine (keeping in mind that I am here in the US, in the NY area and especially susceptible to laser)?

Also, do you know a website that sells modifications for Valentine One? On radardetectors.net they talk about a place that allows you to change the colors of the arrows, LED's on the Valentine One. If I can change them to blue like the 8500 X50 it would mix in with the Porsche interior (light blue dome light) much better.

Stay away from the K40, it always comes out as one of the worst, both in radar detection as with laser jamming which is null.

Impartial site? well, thats a tricky cuestion, for US detectors all the US sites I know of are "tinted" by comertial interests. Also this affects dealerships as well. Since Valentine is sole distribuitor of their products, if you read something good in a site about its ussually true since that site will gain little from it, the opposite is true with Bel & Escort products.

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

What's up with this K40 Calibre Bluetooth stuff?

Unfortunately the Stinger is specially made for the european radars so it does not have superwide KA band whjich you need over there. So not valid for NorthAmerica. But the Stinger DSI is the detector with best warning distances of all, maybe twice as much as a V1 or Bel966.

Sorry, don't know of any webpage that offers different colored LEDs for the display.

What you are talking about is of "jammers", its a completely differnt device. A detector only detects radar signals but does not interfere with them. A jammer will interfer with the signals and attempt to "jam" the police's device.

Radar jammers are highly ilegal since emiting radar waves in Ka band needs permits and is even a federal offence in USA with severe penalties. The only model proven to work is the Scropion but it only works for Noramerican radar frecuneices therefore useless in Europe, and even so I would not recomend such a device.

Laser jammers are tottaly different, since laser guns work on the legal infrarred spectrum of 904nm (a couple in 730nm) wavelegth, just a TV remote control for your TV, only more powerful. So its legal to emit this "light". What is not legal in some places is to use them to interfere with police laser guns. Highly recomended since this is the only "reliable" way to get away without getting a tickect when targeted with laser, since detection of laser gives you barely any warning distance in Europe.

So i can buy and a Laser Jammers and have it in my car?!
are there any brands in the market with such products?!

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

So to be protected best you need two things a Radar detector and a seperate jammer device?

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

    Aixos/Rhino,

Yes, for radar the best is to have a radar detector, and for laser you need a laser jammer, they are not 100% fool proof but pretty close if the right model for you is chosen and installed correctly.

There are many laser jammer companies to choose from (LaserProtector, Blinder, Lidatek, Escort/Bel, Target, etc), and the choice can vary depending on your needs; laser guns used in your area, size & color of your car, if you need only front or rear protection as well, if they are legal or not in your area.

I wll be installing in my car the LaserPro Park which comes sold as a parking sensor and has that function as well, this is to avoid the ilegality issues since jammer are ilegal here. It jams the guns used here and you can fit a transponder head on the rear as well since cops here target you form behind a well. Its only sold in Europe at the moment. But for US, Blinder is comming up with a new model that may be interesting to watch out for.

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

I might be be pushing it with this question but here it goes and appologies in advance. For a white 997S cab in florida what would you recomend? I think I will buy Valentine 1 for detection but whats the best option for front/rear scrambling?

Re: Which Radar Detector is the best???

rhino, its not a problem, I'm glad to help out if I can

For Florida? I believe they shot laser from the rear (not only at front) in Florida, but are they legal there? becuase if they are, a Blinder M40 is a good idea. The problem with the Blinder is that the transponder heads are quiet large and hence more visible so not the best option if they are ilegal there. Lidatek LE-30 uses much much smaller heads because their transponder is based on Gallium Arsenide laser diodes, while the Blinder uses infrared LEDs. But on a white car (very reflective), if you are using LE-30, two heads are recomended for each end of the car which will make it a more expensive setup, and I believe it can only handle 3 heads, so the rear will have to go with only one head. But Lidatek is a great option. Very discrete and effective with two heads.

However, the laser jammer market is undergoing a small revolution currently so I would wait a couple of months, by then the new Blinder may be out as well as a couple of other models (Laser Pro Park maybe as its in their plans).
Also, there will be a big shootout test on laser jammers at the end of this month and will be done in US so it will give more info on which of these latest models will be the best for USA. I can get back to you after the results are released and post it in this thread if you are interested.
