5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

I posted this on some of the 'other' Porsche forums and people seem to like the info contained herein. The comparison pics are best viewed on a wide screen to see all 3 images side-by-side.

I do the vast majority of my posting on Rennlist where I have made some great p-friends. I also post on 6Speed, Renntech, and Autobahn - so,...I thought I would broaden my horizons even more!!!!!! I've eavesdropped here for some time - so, here I am.

Can you see the difference with the notorious 5mm spacer set on a 997 C4S?
Take the following test concerning the three photo exhibits shown below - these are A, B and C as written in Speed Yellow text.
All three photos were taken within an hour of each other at my remote testing facility (actually, it was at my mother's house safely removed from the confines of Boston). The camera was on a tripod which was taped securely in place. The only difference is the position of the sun !!!!!! (I tried to control this but could not).
There are two sets of wheels involved:
    -19" Carrera Classics with stock Michi PS2: 8J 235/35 front, 11J 305/30 rear
    -18" MM3 with Winter Conti T810S: 8.5J 235/35 front, 10J 265/40 rear
One pic is with the Winter Contis and a 17mm spacer in the rear; One pic is with the Carrera Classics w/o spacers; One pic is with Carrera Classics w/5mm spacers x4.
Scroll down slowly so you don't spoil it,...if you can't see the 18" MM3 wheels, please visit another automotive forum now.

    Yes, you guessed correctly....
    A=18" Winter mode
    B=Stock 19" Carrera Classics w/o spacers
    C=Stock 19" Carrera Classics w/5mm spacers x4

It is indeed a fairly subtle difference. Was it worth the $292??? Maybe. I always felt like the stock rubber should have filled out the rear well a bit more on the C4 series - but it's hard for me to tell now as I am just so **** happy to have my 'real' rubber back on the car.

Here are some other pics from my day of changing the tires over & over & over.

    The 5mm Kit:

The kit comes with 20 new bolts (including 4 locking ones) which are 5mm longer:

Rear Hub: no spacer, 17mm spacer, 5mm spacer respectively:

Front Hub: no spacer, 5mm spacer, top view w/spacer respectively:

    And,...the finished product:

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

Thanks for the post and photos! I was thinking about adding the 5mm spacers as well, now I know how it will look! The car look so much more aggressive with the Carrera Classics.

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

i've seen your post in another forum, however very nice report and pics!

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

    Hey Cooch..Welcome aboard..

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

Coochas, I've enjoyed your posts over at the "other" forum. It's good to see you here.

Everyone should check out his personal website, it's a great source for photos and videos

    (996 Video #15 "996 C2 Winter" is a personal fave!)

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

Nice to see you guys here as well.
My vids that Jeff is referring to are at:

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

Thank you for the website Coochas, that a very neat source for videos!

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

I agree. Cool website brutha. Thanks for the hookup!

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

    welcome

    Nice site mahman!

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

hey welcome , and thaqnx for the detailed post, followed by nice pictures...

One thing though, the test you put us in, is incorrect because,

there is not need for guessing because you give it to us served in a plate

    From the beginning

"One pic is with the Winter Contis and a 17mm spacer in the rear; One pic is with the Carrera Classics w/o spacers; One pic is with Carrera Classics w/5mm spacers x4"

You tell us from the beginning of you post the CORRECT order of the PICS and mods,...so no guessing for us

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

    Welcome Cooch,

As everybody has said, nice web site!
    And C4S - good colour.

Only negative point is that my cat still doesn't get your name!

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

    Welcome Coochas!

    Thanks for posting!

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

very ,very ,very, nice web site ,Coochas

    well done

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

Coochas - on the C4S, do the rear wheels already have a 17mm space installed? Does the 5mm space go over the 17mm spacer? The pictures of the rear assembly are confusing to me. Thanks.

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

I can't see any difference at all with or without the 5 mm spacers.

How might the spacers impact upon performance or handling? Are they just cosmetic?

Nope. The I used the 17mm rear spacers ONLY with my 18" winter wheel set because my narrower winter tires are 40 mm narrower than the stock 305s.
For summer I use only the 5mm times all four. In principle you could put the 17mm spacer on the rear hub OVER the 5mm spacer (i.e. to make a 22mm spacer). I might do this next season when I put the winter wheels back on (but let's not think about that!!!!).

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

Thanks everyone for the welcomes and compliments on my site.

MBW,...your cat should understand my name,...try a higher pitch tone.

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

I know funny to see first post from Coochas. He seems like an old friend.

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

Hey, I just posted my first post too! ... asking about what happened to Rennlist?

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

    hi ,

I cant see any difference either SB to be honest
On the other hand such small differenced are better realized on spot and not by pictures, although coochas did a professional job here to pass to us the difference..

Regarding handling, having spoke to different persons about that, i ve heard the following

    1) SPACERS MAKE the car slide more easily on tight corners
BUT gives better stability at staights during high speed driving...

2)SPACERS MAKE the car turn better in tight turns but also effect handling during high speed driving at straights THUS making the car LESS STABLE at high speeds...

    EXACTLY THE CONTRARY THAT IS....:(

3)LAST opinion about spacers is that, they make the car feel, and react, EXACTLY the same,as without spacers, at low speeds and at tight cornering driving, BUT make the car, LOOSE, some percentage of handling ,at high speed driving ,in straights, BECAUSE of the wider track it has with the spacers on...
So wider track worst handling according to this view...
The guy told me that the car should have narrow track to be stable

NOTE : these assumptions and points, are more focused on bigger spacers than 5mm porsche suggests for carrera/S
They are refering to spacers above 10mm....

Dunno which is correct and which isnt..
What i know is that spacers affect differently each type of car, and each typre of model, i.e BMW, MERCEDES,LOTUS ,PORSCHE or even 964,993,996,997 etc..

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

If you look at the front edge of the wheel opening(door side) you can see a little difference.

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

    Thanks Dilinger.

A lot of interesting information, but the same conclusion - who knows?

At 5mm, I would imagine that they are largely cosmetic, and the effect, at least based on those pics graciously provided by coochas, suggest that even that effect isn't large.

Coochas - you have one beautiful machine there. I'm stunned.

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

hi Coochas could you provide us a side shot but taken from the front of the car, to compare the wheel with the fenders?

    like these..

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

    and like this

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

Hey Dilinger - is that your car? Did you finally get the 19's?

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

yes SB check the post i did

updating my 997 and some options

remember the discussions we had concerning 19"

    Things are settled now.

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

Dilinger,....give me a little time on that photo request! I need 1) a sunny day and 2) time!!

Re: 5mm Spacer Vision Test (...and my 1st post)

Love your site coochas... Esp the scans of Porsche tests
