Sounds awesome. Really looking forward to this. As much as I enjoy current Le Mans and the effort that is put into it by the leading teams, the new energy formula and Porsche´s re-entry are even better. Great to see that Porsche finally returns to some serious racing and with an sophisticated engine layout.

This is great news, I hope it's a Porsche specific low center of gravity boxer V4 with giant Turbo power. The more high-tech the better IMO. This way Porsche can offer the future Turbo 4 in their models and advertise racing heritage etc.. I think it's a very smart move, both economically and motorsports wise.

You're really hedging your bets there

A 180 flat 4 can still be a V4 :)
Boxer engines and V engines have different crank pins configurations. 180 V engines have the opposing cylinders sharing the same crank pins.
If it's not a flat 4, I wonder if Porsche would stick with a conventional 90 degree V or go with something more exotic, maybe a 135 degree V to lower the Cg.
I think it will have the reverse flow configurations like the 918, with the exhaust ports and turbos within the V or on the top side.

Wow! This is a very interesting layout! I believe it will be the first time v4 raced.
In bike racing there's a long line of examples.

Is anyone else having problems with the Le Mans web special at Porsche.com? I've tried it in Chrome, Firefox, and IE, and I can't seem to get the site to work properly. I get to "Start Web Special", and, when I click it, the tiles come up, but clicking them does nothing and I can't scroll through any of them.
Some more pictures.
And an updated microsite!

From exhaust point of view it must be inline 4 turbo. If you see the video - the engine is very small, it is even hard to see it on dyno. Its interesting, why didn't they use blown diffuser. I don't think we should look on external design now - too early, now the car has only its basic shape with zero aero package.

In-Line 4 looks more and more likely.

Also- lithium-ion battery system for energy storage.

Lithium-ion, maybe, is the most prefferable way due to supercapacitors and flywheel systems are not able to store 8 megajoules of energy...Or I am wrong?
