The new 3-series has potential to be a base for an amazing M3

I have not seen the car in real life yet, but on the net the new 328i looks great! If they use their brain and make a great M3 AWD convertible based on that - I will be a client :) But those are my requirements, for the rest of the customers if they just make an M3 based on this new look - holy smokes, it will be amazing!

I tested a 328i about a month ago (Sport line). The car is noticeably larger inside and the drive was everything you'd expect from a new 3 as well. Nothing bad to say about it at all. The 3-series line has always been the one to beat in that segment.

Just kidding. The 3 series is already a classic.

Unfortunately, the next gen M3 will use a bi-turbo charged V6, which will kill the sound. Again.

Will be selling my M3 E92 one of the coming weeks and the next generation is not an option as I see it right now. Not least due to the V6 turbo sad

Should be fixable, no? The 911 Turbo exhaust noise has been a complaint for many but people still buy them. Smiley They can't all sound like a V12 Ferrari. Smiley

Should be fixable, no? The 911 Turbo exhaust noise has been a complaint for many but people still buy them. They can't all sound like a V12 Ferrari.

I think the 911 Turbo performance compensates for the lack of sound but I'm not sure this can be said about the next generation M3. Smiley

The current M5 sounds pretty much like my X5 M, maybe a little bit better in the interior but this is not a sound I really like. Maybe BMW should take a lesson in sound engineering with Mercedes...the bi-turbo charged E63 doesn't sound as great as my C63 or the SLS but still much better than the new M5.

V6? Are you sure about that? Should be 6-in-line, no? I know some time ago a patent from BMW regarding a twin-turbo V6 had leaked, but until now I haven't heard any confirmation?

V6? Are you sure about that? Should be 6-in-line, no? I know some time ago a patent from BMW regarding a twin-turbo V6 had leaked, but until now I haven't heard any confirmation?

That´s what I keep wondering as well. If BMW uses the same engine layout as on the S63 engine then the sound might be sacrificed indeed.

If they continue to use the inline-6 then I don´t have any worries at all. Especially as I doubt that they will use a more complex turbocharger layout than on the N54/55 engine.

The latest word is about an I6, not a V6.

Latest word was actually a V6 because the engine is rumored to be based on the current new M5 V8 engine but the boss of BMW NA apparently has dismissed it, so we need to wait and see what happens.

I6 is likely too of course, it depends on the engine they are using.

My friend just got a new Audi A6 TDI with 313 HP. The car comes equipped by stock with Loudspeakers at the exhaust and inside to simulate a V8 sound. Amazingly this really works well and fools you 100%. If they put this system into the new M3 I wouldnt mind!

382 hp? Are you sure?

The most powerful A6 TDi has 313 hp and I listened to one last week and it doesn't even sound close to a V8. Smiley

The sound is not sounding like a Diesel at all though, this is true but it isn't even close to the Panamera Turbo V8 or C63 AMG V8 (I think I have a good comparison right now). It could be compared to the almost nonexistent sound of a Mercedes V8 though, like in the S class. Not at all Diesel-like though.

Audi uses a so called Sound Actuator, which is not a loudspeaker but actually a microphone which "listens" to the engine "sound" and adapts the exhaust sound, according to measurements. The sound is coming from the exhaust, which has a special soundbox installed, which changes the sound based on the signal from the sound actuator measurements. There is no loudspeaker outside the car.

Oh, sorry...I just saw that you changed the hp figure and added some additional information.

Btw: I think the Audi is the much better deal than the new BMW M550xd, especially the Allroad.

Of course a real V8 is aleays better, but being honest, that thing sounds quit cool and its for sure a great thing for the ugly noisy diesel cars!

The Mercedes V8 is IMO the best sounding engine out there. even the Panamera or any other company does have something like this to offer. They. Ight be more loud but the Benz has the nicest sound.

Apparently it's the I6:

"We spoke to the President of BMW North America, Mr. Ludwig Willisch, at a current BMW event and he has officially confirmed that the next generation M3's engine will indeed feature an inline 6 layout and not a V6."

"Willisch is also very much the "Father" of the current BMW M5 F10, as the car was conceived whilst he was in charge of M. and then continued under Dr. Kay Segler. He is also the Father of the one of BMW M's most successful and highly profitable projects the BMW X5M and BMW X6M. and of course modern day Turbocharging. "

I expect an I6 Twin Turbo for F3X M3 pumping about 450 hp @ 7200-7500 rpm. We'll see in a year I guess.
