    The limited 911 Black Edition

Stuttgart. In spring 2011, the world of the 911 will become even more attractive. Porsche is offering an extremely attractive special edition based on the 345 hp (254 kW) Carrera with a 3.6 litre engine. The 911 Black Edition features a particularly comprehensive equipment package, available as a Coupé or Cabriolet – and only in black of course. Exclusivity and price make this 911 Carrera all the more attractive. The 911 Black Edition is limited to 1,911 units and costs exactly as much as the Carrera basic models: In Germany that is 85,538 Euros for the Coupé and 96,843 Euros for the Cabriolet, including value-added tax in both cases. The market launch gets underway in April 2011.1.jpg2.jpg3.jpg4.jpg5.jpg6.jpg7.jpg8.jpg

At least, they are pricing this aggressively since all it is is an options package ...

Re: The limited 911 Black Edition

Porsche seems to sit on tons of 997 parts and the 991 isn't far away.

I agree, the Black Edition is a very attractive offer. I would order it with PDK.

Re: The limited 911 Black Edition

It happened again (after the GTS)...I seriously considered going for this car, in a moment of weakness and desperation (that my beloved 997 Turbo is leaving me in May...lease ends).

After an hour of phone calls, talks, information, checking various stuff online, I asked myself: Why the heck don't you wait for the 991 ? You know that this car is going to be faster, more beautiful, something new and definitely with a high novelty factor.

So, again, I decided to wait for the 991...I just can't justify to go for the 997 and then regret it half a year later, especially since I already have lots of details on the 991.

Only car I would go for in a heartbeat (if money wouldn't matter): 997 Turbo S. This car is so fast, I doubt that any 991 in the foreseeable future will have a better straight line performance than this beast.

So here we go again...I'm waiting for the 991 to show up.

Re: The limited 911 Black Edition

     You'll know when it's right.

And then you'll have a 991 ... and then they'll come out with the 991.2 ... or the 991 Turbo ... or the 991.2 Turbo GT RS Black Edition Performance Package ... and the process will begin again.

You just have to surrender to the force.

Re: The limited 911 Black Edition

Oh, a black 911. How rare

It is funny with these so called "limited" editions. There will be 1'911 of these on the road, all looking the same. While other 911s are spec'ed individually and being unique. Which one is more limited?

So, I am going to put a label on my clove compartment lid too... "Limited Edition: 1 / 1".

Re: The limited 911 Black Edition

It's the 991.2 that I may be interested in.... but that's a few years down the line..

In the meantime I'm very happy with my 997 GTS..

Yes, very good point but in the case of the GTS and the 911 Carrera Black Edition, you also save serious money, so this isn't really about a limited edition or whatever. At least I hope so because nobody can really believe that these "limited editions" will have a better resale value than their standard counterparts. I doubt it, especially regarding the Black Edition.

Porsche did a clever thing to sell as many 997 as possible before the production switches completely to the 991, they need to keep the production up and running (and their highly qualified and well paid workers employed). I wish however that the advantage for the customer would be bigger, PDK for example should be optional free of cost for the GTS and especially the Black Edition. With PDK as a free option, the Black Edition would have serious chances to become a very successful limited edition. Without it, well...I'm not sure. The price tag is attractive but we're talking about the base model here with only 345 HP.

Yes good point - rarity keeps resale prices up - not uniformity.

I think these limited editions are all about offering options at a discount - it can be a good deal at the time of purchase - and while I (like RC) don't expect resale values to be any different from the regular range, the key difference is that if you paid less on initial purchase, your overall depreciation is less than it otherwise might have been if you had chosen a regular car and chosen all those same options.

Since they are promoting a Black Edition of the "standard" 997 in this instance, it looks like they are trying to sell a few discounted new cars before the model change to buyers who might otherwise have been more inclined to go for a used 997.

Re: The limited 911 Black Edition

Yes of course, I was simply being a tad sarcastic Smiley There is of course great value for the customer if the package sells for less than the parts, which seems to be the case here. What I more object is the whole idea of lulling the customer into some false "limited edition" marketing waffle. In reality it is built from the 997.2 parts bin, painted black and got a limited label slapped on. Special? No. Good value? Yes.

Personally, I would not hesitate a second if I was looking for a 997.2 and could get new one for the price of a used.

oh, don't worry - your point was / is absolutely spot-on...it is just fun to talk a little bit about the possible intentions behind this move from Zuffenhausen...by the way, I think you need to update the date in your picture...it says "2010" and we have "2011" already...Smiley... Smiley...

It will ofcourse negatively impact the resale value of used 997's

Re: The limited 911 Black Edition

I'm not sure why Sniffpetrol actually makes fun of this Porsche strategy. I really love the GTS and it is a pretty good offer, while the new Black Edition, while not being the same good GTS offer, may appeal to a certain customer group too.

I wish Porsche would do that more often, not only at the end of a model life-cycle. It brings fresh air to the brand and allows customers to get a good deal too.

Of course it's a good strategy, and attractive to customers too, but you can't argue there are a LOT of special editions lately, it's only normal people start making fun of it...

It's just because "making fun" is exactly what sniffpetrol does, RC.
Sniffpetrol does not have serious side and is not meant to be taken seriously.  Smiley

Its not like the Top Gear TV programme, where the viewer often doesn't know whether some throw-away remarks are solely intended to be humorous or whether there is an element of truth in them.  Smiley

I don't think it is necessarily to be expected. I don't remember Porsche doing this with the 996 and 993, but I could be wrong. This seems to be a new strategy (for Porsche, at least).

I actually thought that Sniffpetrol is more kind of a satirical internet magazine with some profound seriousness at the bottom but maybe you are right, they are looking for plain and simple fun only. Smiley
