Lends more credence to the SLS, detracts from the 458.
I saw my first SLS on I-95 a few weeks back. A Pearl White one. First thing I noticed is that it's much wider than it appears in pictures, but the overall profile and stance isn't breathtaking.
...the only thing stopping you in all likelihood, is you!
Hmm, the SLS has the same power and 110 Nm more torque, while it weighs about 150 kg more than the 458.
So in a straight line there should not be that much difference between these two cars.

palenimbus:
What weight figures are you using? I'm only asking because Ferrari usually underestimates their weight, so maybe the gap isn't so big as 150kg?
Your are right, I made a mistake! The weight difference between these two is even less than 150 kg.
For the 458 I was using the weight as tested in German auto motor and sport, which was 1.544 kg, since you can't trust the Italian weight figures at all.
For the SLS I was using the official weight number, which is 1.695 kg. But this is EU-weight including driver and baggage, so you have to detract 75 kg and in fact auto motor and sport weighed a SLS at 1.632 kg.
So if you take both numbers from ams, the difference between these two is only 88 kg.

Of course it's a joke; it's the entertaining Top Gear people, not a credible car show!!! If you take the 0-200 km/h tests from 3 or four magazines, you will see that the 458 is a couple os seconds quicker than the SLS. Only on silly TG could they be equal...

OMG needless to say Mercedes has pulled it off again. Build a superb car that is right up there. Initially I thought the F458 was going to turn the supersports world upside down with its amazing technology and electronics. Now im afraid it was mostly a marketing job well done on Ferrari's part. Say what you want, a luxory Benz is right up there with the big dog but IMO has more class and luxory as well as a better fit and finish i suspect. Benz simply makes the best cars
indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine.. I happen to like both :)

I also think you have to differentiate if you start with Launch control or not - if both idle and you stamp it maybe it's close. With lauch control I would expect the 458 to win too - but again real life is many times different than what car-testers can achieve.
