    Home Setting On Headlights

I've been coming out some days to find my 05 Carrera with a dead battery and I think I've narrowed it down to this: it only happens when I leave the lights in the "Home" setting.

I haven't tested it to see if it always happens in that setting, but from reading the manual there's no reason that this setting would cause to the battery to drain by itself. I mean, it's supposed to be used when you're getting out of the car and going inside for the night.

On the positive side, I've become very skilled at jump starting Carreras, so if you need a jump, I'm your guy.

Anyone have any ideas before I take it to the dealer?

    Re: Home Setting On Headlights

AFAIK the 'Home' setting only keeps the lights on for a limited time when you lock/unlock the car. It shouldn't use power for the rest of the time that the car is unattended.

Flat batteries IMO are usually explained by not driving the car enough, an alternator that isn't charging the battery enough or a battery that is now finally coming to the end of its useful life. This last possibility could be the case with a 2005 Carrera.

IMO you should try a battery retainer to keep the charge up if you don't use the car often. Otherwise, just go out for longer drives  It's short journeys in the city that mean your car's alternator doesn't get enough time to top up the charge that starting the car took out of the battery.

Sorry if this is all familiar to you already ...

Thanks, Easy. I'd already had the battery checked when it went dead before, also have a plug in charger to make sure it's really topped up and put on about 1,200 miles a month. In fact, had just driven about 60 miles the evening before, then parked it with the lights on the home setting and found a dead battery the next morning, so I think it comes down to some kind but with that switch.

At least it gives me a direction to point the dealer.

Your dealer will be able to check if any current (other than for alarm system) is being drawn from the battery when the car is parked and locked, with and without light switch set to "Home".

I had a similar problem once which was traced to the live wire to the interior light somehow having intermittent contact to earth. It only became apparent when the car was standing at an airport parking lot for a couple of weeks and it resulted in a drained battery.

And that's my worry. Don't want to fly into the airport at midnight and find the battery dead. I've have a electronic bugs already so it's just a process of tracking this one down.
