    Next Porsche 911 spied...

Porsche’s next 911 is coming on strong! Our spies have captured the best pictures yet of the new coupe and convertibles testing together in secret. Codenamed 991, the new cars represent another significant evolution in Porsche 911’s iconic history.

The newcomer certainly looks similar to the old one, but it is a completely new model. And these pictures show a number of styling tweaks for the first time. For a start, the 991 model is a little longer and wider than the car is replaces, giving a little extra space in the 911’s snug cabin.

New design details include larger front wing pontoons which house all-LED headlights, slightly deeper side sills and door-mounted wing mirrors, and a more significantly sculpted rear end, with design cues borrowed from the 918 Spyder concept.

On the inside, the 911 benefits from a hike in quality, with an interior inspired by the Panamera. Expect top-spec Burmester stereos, improved sat-nav with better integration for mobile devices and quality leather trim to feature.

But just like previous 911s, its what’s underneath that counts. The new 911 shares its front suspension and steering with the next Boxster, to cut costs. However, the rear suspension, and calibrations for the PASM adjustable dampers remains unique.

The engine range follows the current cars, with the 3.6-litre flat-six Carrera model’s power and torque rising 20bhp and 20Nm respectively, to 365bhp and 400Nm. The 3.8-litre unit in the Carrera S boasts the same gains, taking power to 415bhp and torque to 440Nm.

Despite the power increase, tweaks to the direct injection system and the addition of brake regeneration and stop start reduce fuel consumption by 12 per cent.

A six-speed manual gearbox will be standard, and the seven-speed PDK will be an option. Most buyers are likely to opt for the auto though, as around 80 per cent of current 911’s feature the PDK dual clutch gearbox.

The 991 911 will make its debut at next September’s Frankfurt Motor Show, and goes on sale in the UK the following month. More powerful 911 Turbo, GT3 and GT2 models will follow in 2012.

If I would get a buck for everytime a carmagazine said that a car launches at a specific date, and failed miserably, I would be a millionaire...the fact is that, unless they quote a reliable SOURCE, from within Porsche in this case, all these are simply speculations based on their intuition more than anything else. And in any case, I think Autobild or Ams are MUCH more reliable sources than some british magazine, at least in this case, simply because they are a couple miles away from porsche's headquarters. So if they haven't mentioned a release date yet it means, by all probability, that porsche hasn't mentioned a release date either.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

I second mariusv, there's way too much speculation out there. Unless a reliable, solid source says anything, I'm not holding my breath. I'm overwhelmingly excited about the 991 and seeing a lot of the camo coming off only makes me go more insane, but until then...

On a side note, I'm seeing a fair amount of news predicting that the next generation Boxster is making a Geneva 2011 debut. I don't see how that'll happen seeing as the 991 looks far more developed than the next Boxster; the most recent spyshots of the Boxster still show that the prototype does not have its real taillights and the nose is more disguised than that of the 991. How curious.

I also don't see it happening since [going with speculation here] a March 2011 reveal for the Boxster and a September 2011 debut for the 991 will generate an enormous amount of coverage for Porsche; the Boxster would have a lot of news around it until September, but then wouldn't the 991 shoo it from the spotlight? Maybe I'm just a complete newbie to these things; look how the simultaneous premieres of the Cayenne and 918 Spyder turned out, eh?

    Thoughts?

    QUESTION:

based on the most recent series of spy shots (showing *much* less camo) do people think that the final 991 will (still) look just like Larson's widely circulated renderings?

    OR --

should these renderings be revised and the 991 will look different.

    Thank you.

Well, I've just read an article on autobild and it says that the new boxster will come in fall 2011 ! Altough, at the same time it says that it will be presented at Geneva in 2011, which doesn't make any sense. Anyway, here it is:

    http://www.autobild.de/artikel/porsche-boxster-981-erlkoenig-1226105.html?bild=6&now=90#mmg

By the way, the current boxster, was revealed before or after the 911 ? Because that's what most likely will happen with the new gens :)

Let's not forget that the 997.2 range was launched just after the 2008 global financial downturn occurred. Very unfortunate timing. PAG will want to wait for as long as possible to feel sure that the economic upturn is well and truly established before releasing a new model. Sure, there is 'new model' demand but PAG needs the global economy to pick up for such demand to remain sustainable.

the back look different to me. Specially the spoiler  is much larger then the drawings.

As to the front there is still too much cam to be sure

The 911 is getting longer and bloated. It reminds me now a bit of the Jag XK. :(

longer and bloated does not mean a thing....  it is all about better handling and weight savings.

Look at the latest Lambo LP700 and you know where I am coming from - incredible weight-loss program.... :)

    Great to read your responses...

I guess for me, I"m curious if the production car will retain the **lip** above the rear-lights (i feel like there is a better word than lip but i cant think of one).

This would certainly distinguish the 991 from the 997, however the latest spy shots seem to have **smoothed** out wheelarches (except the Cab spy shot suggests perhaps a more subtle lip?)...

I believe a lot was written about how the 991 would have even better airflow and aerodynamics so the **lip** could perhaps create more downward forces?

Yet the rear-spoiler looks much longer/wider now... Though from the spy shots there appears to be some photoshopping or additional camo covering up something about the engine bay....?

Curious what others think or to see any new/revised renderings based on the latest spy shots.

(Personally, I think Larson's drawings look great -- they retain the shape that we love while making the 991 a bit more contemporary and distinctive from the 997 -- just my opinion of course)

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

Personally, I am grateful to own a 997 C4S, which to me is a more pleasing shape and size to what is depicted in these pictures.  At any rate, even if  I end up liking the new 991, i shall  await the facelifted edition in 2016 ................... ;-)

The big question for me is the 911 Cabrio!

Will this be a soft top or like on their patent a folding hard top. Looking at the spy pictures of the cabrio's now the soft tops look all too smooth to me, no folding lines and it looks like there is a second window? Or is it like an other member wrote, they pull a fabric over an hardtop.

    We will see............

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

I think Auto Zeitung was spot on, the new ones are another clever disguise of the real shape. Look at them, they are clearly 997 inspired and look strangely misplaced on the 991.

It's a really beautiful interior IMvHO - very elegant styling - taking the best styling cues and touches from the Panamera and Cayenne interiors and modifying them to fit within a cosy 2+2 911 environment

One issue occurs to me - this photo shows a PDK gear lever. As a manual gearbox driver, I wonder what it will look like? Having a manual gearbox coming out of a sloping centre console may or may not be comfortable or aesthetically right. I don't want to have to reach up high to operate a manual gear lever. I guess we need to see an actual spyshot to see what PAG has in mind for us manual gearbox guys.

One can't help thinking that PAG views PDK as the future since even the interior is designed to look 'right' with it. I guess this is inevitable if the vast majority of buyers start choosing PDK.

I don't think that would be a problem ergonomically wise, the idea is that the gear level will be closer to the wheel, making the transition of the hand from the wheel to the gear level quicker. If you think about it its like in the Carrera GT.

True - there's a smaller gap between the wheel and the lever but how tiring is it for one's shoulder to have one's arm in a more elevated position? Just thinking out loud here ...
