20000 happy miles but the water pump & sunroof just went faulty

I'm very happy to report that I recently reached 20000 miles in my car Smiley 20000 happy miles Smiley Smiley

Unfortunately, the sunroof mechanism recently became faulty. On my way to fix my Apple Mac in Covent Garden, I opened the sunroof and then it wouldn't close again. Luckily, I was able to help it to close. And then it wouldn't open again.

You can imagine how I was feeling that day - my Mac wasn't starting and my car's sunroof was faulty. Not one of my better days Smiley Smiley (Fortunately, Apple fixed my Mac like new at no cost to me Smiley)

    http://www.rennteam.com/forum/thread/20177795/Re_Why_does_Safari_501_crash_when_I_play_videos/page1.html#p20177795

Anyway, I booked my car in for repair. It's covered by a 2 year extended warranty that I bought just under 2 years ago. So, I took it to the local OPC today. They did a free health check and, when the car was up on the ramp, they also discovered a small amount of pinkish residue that could be traced back to the water pump. It was a small leak but they said the water pump still needed to be replaced.

So my car is with the OPC right now. Luckily, they have a replacement water pump in stock since it is a very common problem with 997.1 Carreras. They have ordered a replacement sunroof mechanism which will be delivered overnight. And they will carry out all the work tomorrow so that I can collect the car on Wednesday mid-morning Smiley

I guess the decision to get another 2 year warranty extension (when the current one expires) is a no-brainer. I don't have any current plans to sell the car. Can't bring myself to part with the conventionally sprung -20mm sports suspension Smiley

The car should be ready on time hopefully. I am due to meet SVNSVN for dinner on the evening of Wed 15th Sept - while he is here in London - so I hope the car will be ready by then Smiley

Sorry to hear that, but good you have the extended warranty. For me too it is no brainer, the warranty is a smart purchase.

I also had the water pump changed in my 997 .1

Here are some other RT threads on water pump failures

Seems to be a very common problem - I'm just glad they spotted it early in my car

Re: 20000 happy miles but the water pump & sunroof just went faulty

Easy - Water pumps seem to be a common ailment, but easily fixed.  I had the same problem (which you highlighted above) and I also had a sticking sunroof - again easily fixed.  So you shouldn't be inconvenienced for too long.

My extended warranty runs out next month and will cost £1079 to renew for one year or £2095 for two years...plus £211.50 for the mandatory 111 point check prior to an approved warranty being extended.

I was thinking of giving it a miss this time as nothing, covered by the warranty, has gone wrong in the past 24 months.  However, I've now changed my mind and will be renewing it as a precaution even though it's likely that I'll be changing my car well before it runs out.

Please give Richard my best regards when you meet up on Wednesday...

Re: 20000 happy miles but the water pump & sunroof just went faulty

Only had a fuel pump issue once but never water pump. I heard of issues but never heard of any common problem. Well...can't know everything.

The extended warranty, where available, is a very good idea. I know a couple of people who didn't buy it but I highly doubt that this was a wise decision. Take my Cayenne Turbo S for example: I paid 1200 EUR for the warranty extension and the PCM system had to be exchanged because it didn't release a CD anymore. Cost: almost 2000 EUR...happy me I had the extended warranty because apparently they just exchange these units, they never repair them. The cylinder head gasket on the Cayenne Turbo S had also to be changed, another 4000 EUR or so. The warranty definitely pays off sooner or later.

Re: 20000 happy miles but the water pump & sunroof just went faulty

About the water pump, I suspect it has been leaking very slowly for some time - I remember adding around 1 litre of coolant earlier this year when I saw the coolant level lower than usual.  I thought the coolant might just have evaporated due to the blue coolant cap not being properly tightened. But the lower coolant level could have been caused by a water pump leak I guess.

Nonetheless, the technician found evidence of an actual leak anyway - so the water pump had to be replaced now irrespective of what may have happened previously. The water pump was apparently replaced yesterday evening.

About the sunroof, the OPC stripped it down and discovered the cause of the failure. A small plastic clip (probably not costing that much) that makes the sunroof wind deflector go down into place had broken. The broken piece had fallen into one of the runners of the sunroof mechanism. When the sunroof was operated, the mechanism was blocked and therefore failed. So the sunroof mechanism and the 2 clips have had to be replaced.

The clips will arrive tomorrow morning from PCGB Parts and they can then complete the repair job. Hopefully the car will be ready tomorrow morning

    Thanks guys

Would you believe that I actually felt really lost for those 2 days without my car?

Makes me realise that I don't think I could manage without a 911 in my garage

It's a lifelong love affair in my case

Looking forward to meeting SVNSVN this evening - we're going to a really nice Chinese Dim Sum restaurant tonight

Good to hear it was an easy fix and was promptly done so by the dealer.

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

@John H: I assume you have changed your plans now since you are ordering a Carrera GTS Smiley

In my case, I am keeping hold of my car so I plan to get a 2 year warranty extension for £2095 plus £211.50 for the 111 point pre-warranty inspection Smiley

Re: 20000 happy miles but the water pump & sunroof just went faulty

Hi Easy - it all really depends on when the GTS will be delivered...

I've delayed the meeting which was scheduled for today as the OPC still hasn't been informed as to delivery dates or even what their allocation will be...

I'm now meeting them on Monday, when they expect to have some more dependable information, to finalise the spec and place the order.  As you know, I've already placed a deposit to secure the first available slot.

The extended warranty, on my current car, runs out at the end of October.  If the GTS is forthcoming by December I'll take a chance and not re-new it.  If, however,  the delivery is delayed for any reason, I may well take a further one year extension...just to be on the safe side having recently experienced a possible problem with the PCM..
