Actual GT3 RS weight vs. "1370kg with a full tank" - Andreas Preuninger

When I was at the track a couple of weeks back they had the weigh-bridge operating so I put the RS on it.

It came out at 1472kg.  I had at least 2/3 of a tank of fuel.  This was at pre-track inspection so small things like to tools in the front boot were taken out as well as the tire puncture bottle of 'glue' and my helmet was in the car.

We know the DIN (no occupants, 90% fuel) is 1370kg.  So I though I would reconcile it - or at least try ...

I don't have the following options which would save 66.2kg:

PCCB’s  4.8kg (p11 of RS Product News book - per wheel I assume)
Halogens 6kg (from price list /  p25 of RS Product News book)
Aircon delete 14kg (“aprox 14” from distributor)
Light weight battery 10kg (from distributor and p12/p25 of RS Product News book)
Light weight seats 10kg (10kg lighter than standard RS sportsbuckets – p28 of RS Product News book)
    Audio delete? – 7kg??

I have a front lifter which adds 5kg and a fire extinguisher (as standard) which is aprox 4kg according to p.28 of the Product News book - let's say 9kg extra (but i think we should only really count 5kg).

I had at least 2/3 of a full tank - definitely less than 3/4, taking 3/4 as a conservative amount means I need to add back the missing fuel from 90% of a tank which means adding 11.8kg (If I am right and it was 2/3 then it means adding back 15.8kg)

    Actual 1472
    less 66.2
    less 9
    add 11.8
      1408.6

So that's 38.6 kg (at least) different than 1,370kg.

Don't get me wrong - I don't care if it weights xxx or yyy - just if it's represented something as something then it should be so!!!

(and I'm 99% sure the weigh-bridge is accurate)

Re: Actual GT3 RS weight vs. "1370kg with a full tank" - Andreas Preuninger

I'm very surprised the heaviness of the RS. I thought is under 1400 kg even without the expensive options such as PCCB, lightweight battery, Recaro Buckets.

And I thought my E92 M3 is a "pig" weighting approx. ~ at 1620 kg.

they've been quoting "hickey" weights for a while now..... No Carerra GT ever weighed what it was quoted as and 1440kg 997GT2s were all around 1500kg.

I am looking forward with interest as to the weight of customer 997 GT2 RS, discussed in the thread below:

I don't have PCM 3 but I think the screen used for the radio/cd is similiar.  On the thread you've given it's quoted at

    PCM 3 + 10kg

but that probably overlaps with my Audio delete? – 7kg??

Re: Actual GT3 RS weight vs. "1370kg with a full tank" - Andreas Preuninger

Maybe you could get closer to the 1370 by deleting clubsport on top of paying for all the weight-saving extras. Somehow I don´t think even that would help. The cage can´t be 30 kg, I would guess about 18 to 20 kilos at most.

We might also want to remember that the new RS has a 63 litre tank as standard and a 90 litre tank as no-cost option. Naturally the weight of the fuel is going to be 90% of 63 litres, not the bigger tank.

Carpets are also an option and weigh probably 2-3 kilos together.

Re: Actual GT3 RS weight vs. "1370kg with a full tank" - Andreas Preuninger

458 is listed as 1485kg and in Evo it comes in 1546kg (full tank).  Ferrari list it as 1380 dry.

RHD RS has a 66 litre fuel tank (LHD is 67).  I calc'd using 65 litres.

    Spec doc says"

    Overview

    (lightweight construction

    and aerodynamics)

    Particular emphasis has traditionally

been placed on high performance due

to low weight in the 911 GT3 RS model

variants. The current 911 GT3, with its

luggage compartment lid and doors in

aluminium, already offers a good basis

for this. The new 911 GT3 RS is 25 kg

lighter than the 911 GT3, despite the

wider body, the inclusion of the rear roll

cage as standard and the large rear

wing. The weight empty (DIN) of the

new 911 GT3 RS is 1,370 kg, compared

    to 1,395 kg for the 911 GT3.

So 997.2 GT3 weights 1500 kg with 2/3 full tank if the Car is equipped with GT2 bucket seats and has no navi and leather??

You have missed to take out the roll cage from your calculation and also account for a 64 l tank, not  90 l.

Why should Porsche lie about the weigths, they know that their customers weigh their cars (which I doubt that Ferrari drivers do)?

However, to get to the stated 1370 kg you need to spec the car like this, which does not make sense, does it (why would you want a light weight car without the roll cage...):

    PCCB

    64 l tank (90%)

    Light weight seats

    Halogen lights

No Clubsport cage (cage, 6-p belts, fire extinguisher)

    Light weight battery

    No AC

    Radio delete

White (I seem to remember that the other colours are a few kg heavier)

    No carpets

Maybe not "lying" but certainly based on what you say above Porsche are being disingenuos at least.

AFAIK the cage is standard in the RS.

If we use the DIN weights as a starting point, this should be the weight for the stock car AFAIK - no heavy options, but also no "delete options".

I know quite some GT3/RS buddies who checked the weight of their cars and there was always some extra weight compared to what Porsche claims.

Here's the example of my own car (997.1 GT3)

DIN: 1,395 kg. As the car came standard with a 90 litre tank, dry weight should be 1,335 kg (DIN includes 90% tank).

Actual weight: 1,431 kg dry weight Smiley

    Bonus:

GT2 seats - 18kg (vs. stock sport seats)

    Malus:

    PCM/Navsat + 10 kg?

    Leather: + 10 kg ?

    Sound Package: + 10 kg?

    6-point-harness: 5 kg ?

    Floormats: 2 kg ?

TOTAL: 19 kg malus, which would mean a dry weight of 1,354 kg. Where are the remaining 77 kg coming from ? Did I not yet detect the cement bag in the trunk which I used to put into the VW Beetle decades ago to improve front grip ? Smiley

Re: Actual GT3 RS weight vs. "1370kg with a full tank" - Andreas Preuninger

Porsche-Jeck: Your calculation is all wrong. The officially stated weight is always for a car in its lightest possible spec world-wide, not for a std no-option car. This is confusing, but those are apparently the rules. Compare with Mercedes that always states a range for weight and performance depending on options. I would be all for that the officially stated weight should be for a standard no-option car.

Re: Actual GT3 RS weight vs. "1370kg with a full tank" - Andreas Preuninger

and to be fair Porsche now state a "range" for the DIN weight in the handbooks although the Journos always use the lighest number for quoting.

On the 997GT2 the handbook says the DIN weight is 1440kg to 1525kg which is about right although I bet there are very few 1440kg cars out there !

Obviously yet another example of how some industry lobbyists wrote the rules to their own likings.

Anyway: as long as the rules can mislead buyers to wrong assumptions I don't give anything on the official "minimum weight" claims as long as they don't reconcile (PCCB -20 kg etc.).  The truth can be found on the weighing machine...

Hi TEE - of course I don't know how the car would behave with 80 kg less but what I know is how a 80 kg passenger effects the performance: braking points, corner speed, acceleration - definitely noticeable Smiley

So, I'm little confused here. From the weighting of the cars 997.1 GT3 is lighter than 997.2 GT3 RS by some 50 kg??
