Bit harsh there eh? The new 5er is a winner. New Ecoupe is quite nice. I like this CLS too but the ball is in BMW's court as they probably will introduce their GranConcept, a 4door coupe based on the new 6er chassis....
indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine.. I happen to like both :)
Mercedes abandoned the elegance of Mk1 CLS for an imposing and grandeur style for the Mk2. It's similar to the design philosophy of all their recent cars.
It will sell well especially outside "old" Europe, in countries where ostentation is a virtue.

I agree that these shots look better than the previous set. I gather than svelt and uncomplicated is no longer in vogue at MB design. For me Mercedes lost is aura years ago when the traditional radiator became vestigial and the SL grill found its way onto every model.

Whoopsy:
About time they give us carbon fiber trim, the worst attribute of the 1st gen was the ugly wood. interior looks so much richer, nicer, much more elegant with the carbon trim.
+1 - my thoughts! I always hated that wood, this carbon makes it need and stylish!
