    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

Bergmeister did the same thing last year. (it is rumored that Porsche was not to pleased) It really is a waste of a good driver and car. However, this is what Porsche must subject itself to , when their entire racing program is customer based.

With manufacturers such as Ferrari, BMW , GM and Audi (not yet at Le Mans in GT2) getting seriously involved in the GT2 class, Porsche should perhaps start rethinking its strategy.

From what I can gather from the interviews that I have heard so far, The #77 Felbermayr and the BMS cars will be out to compete with the fastest F430's Corvette's and BMW's whilst the Lizzards car will plod along waiting to gain positions as the attrition rate increases. (like the winning BMW at Nurburgring did).

    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

Thanks.. so maybe VW strategy is Audi focusing on LMP and Porsche focusing  on GT class cars.

    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

One would think, but then how do we justify the R8 LMS competing in the GT3 and the VLN.

I sincerely hope that is not the path that they take. Porsche's spiritual home is sportscar racing - and if it hadn't been for WW's disinterest in motorsports, Porsche would not find itself in this position today.

    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

An interesting little trivia fact: This year, the youngest driver in the race will be Marco Holzer (21 years) and oldest Horst Felbermayr Sr. (65). - Both are drivers in the Felbermayr Team.

    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

Sorry guys - The oldest (Horst) is with Felbermayr ;  The youngest (Holzer) is with BMS - They are both racing Porsche.

    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

    New 2011 Hybrid Rules:

    HYBRID SYSTEMS

The ACO wishes to give manufacturers the widest possible scope to use and develop such systems by putting a certain number of controls in place. Energy recovery systems will be allowed provided that they respect the following rules :

    • Recovery and release of the energy on two wheels (front or rear axle) choice free.
    • Maximum quantity of energy released between two braking phases: 500 kJ.
    • Energy stocking: electrical or mechanical systems
    • System actuated by the accelerator pedal only (push to pass button forbidden).
    • Hybrid safety specification drawn up by the ACO.
    • Other means of energy recovery allowed: exhaust, engine heat, dampers etc. provided they respect the specification drawn up by the ACO (safety, driver aids banned, evaluation of the increase provided by the system, reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions).
    • Energy recovery systems using brakes must not be active in curves (driver aids banned).
    • Fuel tank capacity reduction: 2 litres less for petrol and diesel-engined cars.
    • Pit lane test obligatory for the cars in the hybrid category according to Art 1 / Definitions, § 1.12 of the ACO LM P1 & LM P2 technical regulations, which stipulate that a car in this category must be able to cover the distance of the pit lane (400 m.) at a speed of 60 km/h using only the power generated by its hybrid system.

Lets see if Porsche can work with this.

    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

CREATION OF THE GT ENDURANCE CATEGORY

In 2011, there will be no LM GT1 category for the following three reasons:

    • Numerous date clashes on the calendars,
    • Very small fields outside the Le Mans 24 Hours,
    • Current category is entirely sprint based.

This is why in agreement with the GT manufacturers the ACO has decided to create a GT Endurance category with a single set of regulations valid between 2011 and 2013. These regulations are based on the GT2s complying with the 2009 ACO rules with the following modifications:

    • Steering wheel-mounted paddleshifts.
    • 1 evolution per year allowed.
    • 2 evolutions per year allowed for new cars.
    • Measures taken to reduce top speed without reducing power.

The GT Endurance category will be for one type of car but divided up into two classes:

    • GT Endurance PRO: professional category, cars and drivers free.
    • GT Endurance AM: cars of over one year old and a minimum of two drivers classified in the bronze or silver categories (LM P2 LMS 2010 regulations).
    • Green X in PROTOTYPE and GT
    • Reduction in tyre consumption (as in 2009 and 2010)
    • Reduction in decibels (From 112DB in 2010 to 110DB in 2011)

    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

Not a good qualifying session for Porsche.

They are off the pace of the Corvette's and the Ferrari's. It looks as if they are going to adopt the tortoise strategy. There is a rumor that they had to turn the revs down due to concerns over engine reliability. I don't know to what extent this is true, but....

    Fastest Porsche's qualified in 5,6,8and 10.thumbdown.gif

    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

Not at all! I find it very troubling, (if the rumors are true) that there are engine concerns.

I still enjoy watching the speed of the protos and listening to the Aston's wail is pure pleasure. The Gulf livery doesn't hurt either.

I kind of expected that you wouldn't have digital shots from your trip in 1999 but it didn't hurt to ask. I envy you! I have been to the French GP and yet have never been to Le Mans. Kind of crazy considering my bias towards sportscar racing. Smiley

    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

BTW- 1999 was the year the Mercedes flipped on the Hounaudieres straight.

    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

One of the many reasons why I inquired about your pictures. Did you have a chance to get up close to the Toyota GT-One? I imagine the CLK's were sexy in-person.

    Enjoy the race!

    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

Porsche is getting a beating from (new to GT2)  Corvette and Ferrari

    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

Corvettes yes, Ferrari no. Things can always change. Those Vettes are fast!

    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

Corvettes are running strong..particularly on the lonf straight aways...Porsche # 77 certainly has some speed in the nightime hours but I believe Porsche is pushing the motors harder. Fuel mix is what they run for qualifying.  One has to wonder whether 997 RSR has finally reached it limits on tracks like Lemans.

    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

The night has done the Felbermayr Proton Porsche some good... The Risi Ferrari had transmission problems, in the morning one of the Corvettes had an engine problem, the other one crashed. Handing first place to Porsche.

Still a long way to go though, I hope they can keep it!

    Re: 24hrs of Le Mans • June, 6th – 13th 2010

Porsche's sheer speed isn't up to it, but with 4hrs to go, all RSR's are still running except the flying lizard car, while 4 F430 had to give up, and the two Corvettes are out too...

Not a spectacular way to win but reliability proves vital here! Smiley
