Re: Rennteam's tribute to the Ferrari 458...lots of photos, videos, etc.

Actually, the SLR is more pleasing to the eye and attracts more (in this context at least) than the matte black Ferrari . Which could be the ultimate insult!

IMO matte black is suitable only for motorcycles.

I agree. It's nice on a MAD MAX  type of car or a bike.  Around me I see regalarly a 996 , 997, X5, RR sport in mat back. And none is nice.

The verde car with the Cologne plates seems to be missing a front plate.

Thats right the car has no front plate. The owner will keep it clean an has the plate inside only with a strap in case that the police ask for the fixing points at the front of the car.

Re: Rennteam's tribute to the Ferrari 458...lots of photos, videos, etc.

I saw a matte black in person and it looks better than in pictures. That said, I would never order my car in that color.

Re: Rennteam's tribute to the Ferrari 458...lots of photos, videos, etc.

I don't know if anyone will agree with me (doubtful?) but I find the F430 a more characterful design than the new 458.

The outgoing car is a perfect mix between elegant style and sportiness. A real race car for the road appeal. The new car, although pretty,  looks more effeminate and has a frail delicacy that doesn't suit the brand and the character of the car. Moreover, the 458 has something wrong in its proportions around the area of the rear wheel arch especially if you look at it 3/4 from the front. The space freed up by the removal of the 430 intakes was not successfully tackled by the designers IMO.

IMO the F430 is a classic and used ones will be the real deal for enthusiasts soon.

Re: Rennteam's tribute to the Ferrari 458...lots of photos, videos, etc.

That scud was like the last years of the countach, too many inlets/outlests/add-ons to the body, too busy whereas the 458 is an attempt to get back to 355 simplicity of a nice simple flow.

Re: Rennteam's tribute to the Ferrari 458...lots of photos, videos, etc.

The Scud has no more inlets than a standard 430 Tom. It just has larger front air intakes, revised larger air exits on the corners of the front bumper to channel more air away from the front wheels and slightly wider air scoops on the side skirts. These are all functional items to improve air flow and cooling.

It also has no body add ons. The rear spoiler is integrated into the rear deck of the car and is slightly higher than the same item on a regular 430 to create more downforce.

You must be in a minority as most people prefer the look of the Scud to the standard 430.

An "attempt" for sure but it could have been more successful. In their effort to simplify the car they have made it too soft IMO with an inappropriate delicacy and overrefinement. Not muscular enough for a supercar unlike the F430 especially the Scuderia version.

I am very well aware of the functionality Iain. (followed F1 for 30 years now and work on my own car) You know what I was saying. Holes every where - too busy. I've sat in a scud and seen others including a couple 16M's.

But I am on record here as being a fan of the truly exotic Ferrari's, low and wide. The 430 was a big car.

See here - as tall or taller than a 512

NOTHING says exotic more than LOW + WIDE and NOTHING said FERRARI more than a 355, hopefully a 458 comes close in person

Re: Rennteam's tribute to the Ferrari 458...lots of photos, videos, etc.

I wish Ferrari kept modernizing and refining these marvelous classic shapes instead of  trying to find  new directions every few years with their mid-engined cars.

Porsche has been doing that with the 911 and although some people criticize and say their designers are lazy but in effect they have created a durable iconic classic.

Re: Rennteam's tribute to the Ferrari 458...lots of photos, videos, etc.

Reginos some people like revolution you know.  I find the 911 so dated nowadays... Furthermore, Ferrari's design is influenced by aerodynamics and engineering. Ferrari for example would never keep the engine in the wrong place for 40 years...

Revolution for its own sake is not always good. You have every right to find the 911 so dated but on the other hand 15.000-20.000 customers a year cannot be totally blind or clueless.

And anyway Ferrari cars are seldom faster than top Porsche models  around circuits and in tests in spite of the "engine in the wrong place" and all the aerodynamics + engineering. So, Ferrari cars are sure very good for their type, but we shouldn't exaggerate on their merits and believe everything their publicity department says about them revolutionizing the automobile.

A recommended reference is the Sport Auto test data and their NBR and H'heim times.

Re: Rennteam's tribute to the Ferrari 458...lots of photos, videos, etc.

The top of the line Ferrari is always a lot quicker than the top of the line Porsche (points in case F40 vs 959 and Enzo vs Carrera GT). Other than that, Porsches are close to Ferraris (in Quattroruotte's test the GT2 was less than half a second slower than the Scuderia) but almost always slower.

I do agree with you. At first I liked the 458 much more then the 430, but after seeing it in real life, and driving it, I do like the looks of the 430 scud more . It is much more masculin and raw, more impressive. The 458 is a bit too much on the skinny side and has some weird details that you see in real life, not on the pics

BTW Quattroruote tests are very poor IMO and I wouldn't be surprised if they are partisan or on Luca's payroll Smiley

Try to get Sport Auto, even for people who don't speak German, the way they do the tests  there are lots of interesting figures.

PS: The best sold car in the history of the motorcar is the Toyota Corolla... should we infer it's the best car ever?

Jokes aside, the various Toyota Corollas over time (the name doesn't even exist today) had nothing in common in configuration between them except the name. So this car doesn't qualify for the "best sold car". I think this accolade goes to something like the  VW Beetle or Citroen 2CV.

BTW which Ferrari(s) do you own?

Re: Rennteam's tribute to the Ferrari 458...lots of photos, videos, etc.

Personally, I find Quattroruote very analytical, honest and insightful. I have not seen such a vast array of data and measurements in any other magazine. If you had said that Quattroruote is on Luca's payroll in Italy, people would have bust in laughter as it is a well known fact this particular magazine is not favourable at all towards the Fiat Gruppo. On the other hand, all german magazines I have come across are borderline nationalistic...

I am not a Ferrari owner.
