Joost:
In that high-res vid that boxster GTS posted, the engine sounds really weird... not that raw porsche bark, but way more muffled... or is that just me?
Exactly my thoughts. in some scenes it sounded like a V8 like Camaro, nevertheless I like the sound.

So I guess that this could be a "face-lift" on the outside but a new model (991) on the inside
I wouldn't say facelift, all the panels look new to me.
Looking at the pictures from the crash, the hoodlines are probably different...like this...
Yeah, sorry. I don't have that keen an eye.
Serious talent though, thanks

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine.. I happen to like both :)

A couple of ideas for the 2012 Porsche 991 GT3...
The 2012 Porsche 991 GT3 could look good with some genuine wide-body wheel arches...
Porsche 3.4-litre motorport V8 engine developing over 500bhp, with a 9,200rpm red-line and 7-speed PDK gearbox...
The Porsche 918 Spyder is powered by a high-speed V8 developing more than 500bhp and running at maximum speed engine of 9,200rpm as well as electric motors on the front and rear axle with overall mechanical output of 218bhp.
The V8 combustion engine is a further development of the highly successful 3.4-litre power unit already featured in the RS Spyder racing car and positioned mid-ship in front of the rear axle, giving the car the right set-up for supreme performance on the race track through its excellent balance.
Power is transmitted to the wheels by a 7-speed PDK gearbox also feeding the power of the electric drive system to the rear axle. The front-wheel electric drive powers the wheels through a firm transmission ratio.
Porsche 3.4-litre Motorport V8 Engine...
The 90-degree V8 racing engine with a displacement of 3.4 litres generated 478bhp with the air-restrictor prescribed for 2008. The version used in the ALMS since mid-2008, which comes with direct fuel injection (DFI), generates as much as 503bhp. Distinguishing features of the long-distance engine are its low weight and low centre of gravity.
Porsche 7-speed PDK Gearbox at 9,200rpm...
Two interlocking transmission shafts, each linked to a separate clutch, allow for power-shifting without torque interruption. The central module in this transmission is the dual clutch from ZF Sachs. A dual clutch system can be used in all passenger cars, especially high performance vehicles.
Porsche Motorsport Sound...

"...so Mr Andreas Preuninger, how about a 2012 Porsche 991 GT3 with a 3.4-litre V8 developing 500bhp, with a 9,200rpm red-line and a 7-speed PDK gearbox!"

I've looked at the roofline of the cab in the video, froze the picture and went to my garage to look at the rooflines of my Mercedes SL and my Porsche Cab. I have to say that the rooflines on the cab don't look at all like the roofline of the current Porsche cab. It slopes down at a steeper angle, very much like the Mercedes SL folding hardtop.
It will be interesting to see if they have managed to find the room to stow away a folding hardtop.

while it's hard to see on this picture to be certain,
from the patent application it could be possible that it is a hard-top convertible, where you can open the mid element alone and have a sunroof effect of the coupe.
that in fact would be a pretty cool idea and rading above text hints at just that.
