Well, what did you expect?
The secret of life is to admire without desiring.
It is very sad that they will price this car outside the financial means of its loyalist. Finally, they have designed a car which has a modernity that will attract those within and outside the Porsche customer base. Yet, it is beyond the financial reach of 99.9% of them.
Honestly, how can one look at a 911 in the same light now that they know there exists a Porsche styled for today and the future? The 911 design is stale, dreary looking and unexciting. How long can Porsche push the engineering and not the styling angle to sell cars?

nberry: How long can Porsche push the engineering and not the styling angle to sell cars?
For as long as there are buyers like me who value the engineering more than superficial styling, and judging by the success of the 911, we are more and more with each generation of 911, so they have no reason to change.
In sportcars, any company can play the styling angle, its the engineering one that seperates the men form the boys and you play the styling angle when you don't have the engineering one.
Also this 918 spyder has an excellent design but that not all about this car, if we know Porsche, the best will be in the inside, and the styling is a bonus. And this is no 911 substitute or rival, this is a GT1-CGT sucessor, for the CGT, Pagani, Koenigsegg, Veyron, Enzo, etc crowd. Nothing wrong with those companies building those cars that are only at the reach of 99,9...%. Good for those that can affort one.
I know you were looking foward to a similar car from Porsche at a lower price range closer to a 458 for example, but this is not it, and Porsche doesn't seem to be in that path. There are other fine companies that are, the 458 looks to be a fantastic car. Who knows, maybe after this car is produced there may be a lower priced spin off version but I doubt it, when they have the 911 that is more sucessfull and profitable than all its rivals.

As long as there will be rational buyers who put substance and engineering integrity over exhibitionism and conspicuous display. Anyway all Porsche sports cars look great and timeless, striking the right balance between heart and mind.
For the amount I , for example have paid for my new Carrera S I could have imported a used F430 from the UK (right hand steering here). But I hate even the idea of such conspicuous and limited use car. For the same reason I turned down the R8 which is closer to my way of thinking than the Ferrari. Not that I criticize others who would have done otherwise but it's just to show that purchasing patterns differ substantially between types of individuals.

On top of that this is by no means a 911 replacement. Also as far as i know, the 911 is getting more popular if anything. I don't get the hating on how it will blow away the 911 and cannibalize it. Makes ZERO sense. Did the CGT do this?
When you think about it, you will realize that the technology and innovations will be passed down to the model range, and that should be seen as a plus.
Think of how the next boxster will look like? Common this will be awesome!! Such exciting times, Porsche is on the comeback!! Hopefully they will win the 24hr in May!
indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine.. I happen to like both :)

Ferdie:
... I cannot remember the last time Rennteam has been such a wonderful place to debate about cars. All due to a single Porsche car...
This backs up what many of us have been saying all along - when certain people have been saying things like "Rennteam is dying" etc - all we need is something to act as a catalyst for discussion.
As soon as there is a new car - like the 918 Spyder, 458 Italia, 997.2 GT3 RS, 997.2 TTS etc etc - we all get energised to talk about it.
The developed world may be exiting the global economic slowdown slowly - and car purchases may not be amongst everyone's immediate future plans - but the energy and activity here says one thing loud and clear: Rennteam still rocks

No concept car can be taken for granted at launch. Only time defines long term classics. The 911 is a timeless classic and it will always be.

That web special could be for their new 4cyl Boxster like sports roadster.
Is it for the 988 Spyder?
If so expect to see a lot of louvers on the rear deck and sides. Perhaps a compound turbo and supercharged 4cyl 2liter engine. Weight? Guess @ 1250 - 1300kg. Please give it a 7spd close ratio manual with LSD. Pure speculation.
Gentlemen, answer this question. If you walked into a Porsche showroom and on display for sale was a 911 in its current styling and the 918 Spyder styling with the 911 "guts" which cost about $15,000 more, which would you chose?
Porsche can style a 911 to look like the 918 whether in a coupe or convertible but with the same engineering as the 911and it would not cost that much more. Get my point? Instead they chose to continue with (by most accounts) an old tiresome style. Why do they do this? In my view it is because they don't respect the Porsche buyer. He/she will buy it because it's a Porsche.

Nick, how can a mid-engined V8 two seater have the "911" guts? I don't think you ever got the "911 point".
Buyers are lining up to but 911s more than ever with each generation and you say they don't respect the buyer because of the design? Nick, Porsche does not cater with the 911 to the poseur buyer who is all about exclusive flashy designs, the 911 buyer is different and loves its classic design, thats why they keep it that way and its increasingly succesful with each generation. If the 911 is not for you, the look somewhere else, you have plenty to pick from, why do you want so bad for Porsche to build it when they never have

For the same reason I prefer to wear a "tiresome style" Rolex Submariner or Daytona in stainless steel than one of the fancier Panerai, Hublot , AP and whatever else is considered "in" and "must have" these days.
To each his own

A 911 is a timeless design and a unique architecture. Both go hand in hand. The architecture means - short wheelbase (it has been growing), rear engine, flat6. Changes to that make it non-911. I suspect the 911 fans are growing old and the new jocks will forget about it. That is too bad.

Correction, the 918 lapse the Ring in 7.30 sec only in computer simulation.
Carlos, you get my point. Porsche needs to get away from the frog design and enter into the 21st century. Resting on "timeless" styling is a recipe for being old before your time.
So back to my question which would you buy and assume the 918 is called just that 918 and you had a choice between the 911 or the new Porsche 918? I think I know the answer.
